  1. My littlest is 8 months. Our schoolroom is gated and has a toy basket for her with contents that rotate weekly. I often teach on the floor - kids read to me, I read to them, whiteboard work, etc. Seat work is done while I am nursing, while she is in the jump-up, or children alternate time with me and recess with sister. Hands-on happens during nap time. She also gets the first part of the morning, so she tends to be a little less needy. As we do more weeks of school, she is picking up on the rhythm and is content to play on the floor.
  2. I have 7 Pieces of Cleverness for our family. It's a vintage game with puzzles even an adult will find challenging. My littles try to place pieces to copy the answer key while the rest just use the game booklet as intended to figure where things fit.
  3. I am using the Kids Travel Guide with my boys. It's written for Sunday School, a lesson a week. Since mine kid are little, I am breaking down each lesson into five sessions to stretch across a week. Some activities translate well to a small group, others I have substituted. It's given me a jumping off point, but I have supplemented heavily. Most lessons require some prep of games, props etc. It's activity based, and scripted. I think it's good for early elementary, but I'd look for another resource if mine were older.
  4. On the western side of PA we have: The tall ship Niagara and Maritime museum in Erie PA and the Perry Monument (war of 1812) Pittsburgh PA offers 1. The Carnegie museum of Natural History 2 The Carnegie Science Center/ Buhl planetarium 3. The duck boats and the USS Requiem (WW II sub) 4. The Andy Warhol Museum 5. Falling Water Titusville PA has the OC&T Railroad and was the birthplace of the US Oil industry. Small museum about early oil drilling. In other states, I'd do Lexington/concord and Boston. Philadelphia for the Liberty bell and Independence Hall. Mount Vernon. Monticello. Jamestown. Colonial Williamsburg. Yorktown. Biltmore. Just for the craziness of the road, Deal's Gap. Appalacian trail. A whale watch on the ocean. Gettysburg will be crazy this year due to the anniversary, but every civil war site will be the same. If you do not like crowds, avoid the first week of July. If you have no preference, then the best reenactments will be that week. Between Gettysburg and Philly is Lancaster and Amish country. The Sight and Sound Theater is great for dramatization of the Bible. I'm sure there is more. Enjoy your trip!
  5. We will be doing our official K year with the following: ETC 4-6 Memoria press- story time treasures Queen homeschool -printing with pictures AAS 1&2 Saxon math 2 God's Design science - universe/ weather / our world Elemental history - Adventures in America with COAHS- road trip USA We do not have to report/evaluate so we will probably "school" all year and not every day.
  6. My kids are not as old as yours, but I am planning to combine Farther up and Farther In with Roar: A Christian Family Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia. in a few years.
  7. Now a mom, but I really like OM. It encourages teamwork, thinking creatively, research, time management skills, etc. There are so many different long term problems, that there is something for every personality. I always did the skit based, one friend built the balsa towers, while another was into the robotics. I hope to find a program locally when my kiddo is old enough.
  8. I come at this from a religious perspective. That said, I believe some things have to deliberately taught. Telling the truth, serving others, work ethic, etc. we split our time covering Biblical literacy, doctrine , and character. I schedule it with school so I meet our families goals, but do not consider it a subject. I choose religious curricula like 24 Family Ways, We Choose Virtues, etc for the character segment. We also have the kids participate in service projects. Nothing like giving of themselves to raise awareness and compassion.
  9. According to our tracking number, today should be box day. I think I am more excited than the kids, but we will see after it arrives. Oldest did not want to go to preschool because he "already knows how to count" so his books will be a mix of gr 1 and K from Rainbow Resources.
  10. There are somethings that I have just never been able to slog through, but have enjoyed when listening to the podcat, Craftlit. Heather has done a great job with the Tale of Two Cities, Scarlet Letter, and Frankenstein. She is an English prof and teaches the chapters as she reads them. If looking for free audio with commentary, check out her book list. Not affiliated, just a happy listener.
  11. FWIW - the death mentioned above was that of Lydia Schatz. Her parents, Kevin and Elizabeth, used the Pearls ministry to justify abhorrent, abusive behavior. IMHO the Pearls do not teach anything close to the atrocity that was committed against this child. The violence lies squarely upon the Schatz.
  12. My parents let me choose and I still play flute. My husband wanted to play drums but his parets had a rule about two years of piano first. He chose to stop because he did not like piano. I'd rather our kids have the opportunity to choose but they will have ether myself or their grandma as a teacher.
  13. Is there a resource for learning about these methods. I have two boys and this could prove useful.
