Depends......but I read through show catalogs every single weekend and I can tell you I see more fun, catchy names than Sir Charles Poppycock The Great type names. In my own experience, we pick names before we bring the puppy home, because our breeder files the paperwork. We often do geographical names (Schoodic, Yuma, etc.) or something that has some meaning to us or the breeder. Kayak was a "K" litter, so his name had to begin with a K. Our breeder's husband builds inlaid wood sea kayaks that are displayed in maritime museums all over the world, and he builds them lovingly by hand, so we used "Kayak Calm Waters" for his registered name to pay homage to Jurgen, the breeder's husband. Some breeders have "theme" litters-- songs, geography, etc. My dd is a huge Beatles fan and has tons of "Beatles" puppy names picked out for our kennel prefix, which is "Curlingstone." Curlingstone's Strawberry Fields, Curlingstone's Eleanor Rigby, Curlingstones Lucy in the Sky, Curlingstone's Words of Wisdom (Let it Be) etc. I like Fireflyz He's a Good Man better than "Fireflyz Good Grief Charlie Brown" because the former draws the connection without making it seem "trademarked." I don't know... I'm picky about names, and I love to play the Name Game with puppies and litters. astrid

Yes, breeders are very pleased when titles are earned by dogs with their kennel name prefix. It shows that their lines have working ability-- brains and good looks, in other words. The registered name is never used around the house; dogs have "call names." Sometimes they have something to do with the registered name, and sometimes they don't. Below I have our current dogs' names, and their call names come after. For the first two, their call names are just shortened versions of their registered names. We had our Corgi in a dog-friendly yarn store (I know, it's a contradiction in terms, but it's the biggest yarn store in the USA and it's awesomely dog-friendly!) Anyway, a woman bent down to pet my exceedingly polite Corgi and said, "Oh! I just LOVE Corgis! I keep trying to convince my husband that we should get one. But do you think a Corgi would chase my house rabbit?" I replied, "Only once." She didn't get it at first. When it dawned on her she hustled away. astrid

We've belonged to a grass-fed beef CSA for nearly 2 years now. We get 10 lbs per month, which is the lowest amount allowable. We NEVER use it all up. We just don't. I think that's because other than hamburger, I really don't know how to cook grass-fed beef. Everything seems drier and more gamey than grocery-store beef. I know that's the nature of the beast, and to a certain degree we need to live with it, but I think I just need to know how to cook it differently than the beef we all had growing up. I mean, pot roast-- tough to screw up, right? But mine with the grass-fed beef seems to never get moist enough. Is it me? PLEASE tell me some ways to learn to love cooking grass-fed beef! Slow cuts and steaks especially. I have such guilt over the waste! Anyone? astrid

Personally, I never had back problems until this fall. I would have worn them anyway if I'd discovered them sooner. I always saw them on people and thought they were cute but never really knew what brand, etc. I happened upon them because I saw a pair in a store that had a knitted pattern, which I HAD to HAVE. I bought them, loved them, and was telling my friend how it sounds crazy but my back feels better and she told me that no, they're good for backs. YES. THIS. I know it sounds unbelievable, and I didn't believe it myself until I tried them, but it is true. My back was awful..... I haven't had any pain since buying my Danskos three weeks ago. I cannot recommend them highly enough. I"ve got to find a few more pairs in different colors so I never have to wear anything else! Astrid
