  1. I was wondering if any of you had any experience with Edx Geometry, through School Yourself? I'm the mom with the son that had the Concussion/Post Concussion Syndrome/ TBI, fractured skull last summer from a skateboarding accident. His Concussion specialist had him working through one subject at a time. He's about to come up to his last class, Geometry. He wants to knock Geometry out during the summer. His memory is 100% back, he still has other issues, but memory and ability to do school is not one of them. We do have someone that is also going to tutor him, and I thought this would be good, because his tutor can see exactly what he's doing on his end. Is EdX geometry good, but not overwhelming? This is a kid that wouldn't go do college for anything math related. Thanks, Abby
  2. I haven't read all the posts yet, but, to me? I'd incorporate that into a 3D Design course. Maybe have him make an installation piece showcasing his designs? Something like that?
  3. I was planning on going through this process for my oldest son for next year. But, now our Homeschool Group is thinking of offering it in the fall. Does that change the audit process for me? Going from teaching one homeschooler (my own) to possibly eight? I've never done this before, so I'm not sure. The audit website isn't open until March, so I can't snoop around in there to figure this out. Thanks, Abby
  4. I usually don't take the quizzes, but do listen to the lectures, and take part in the discussion boards. I love it. I've learned so much, and it keeps me off FB ;) My son is doing some for part of his science class this year, and he is doing everything, and is working towards certificates. Either way, we've both been very happy. Right now I'm doing one about Terrorism and one about Chronic pain.
  5. Very interested in this!!! Can't wait to see it all!
  6. We use a diploma program, and have evaluations in May. I was hoping that we could be done with the school year by then, but we won't be.
  7. Right, it is ridiculous, that's why I wasn't grading anything until now, I just don't know how to handle it with the transcript. But, the doctor wanted us to start school work, part of his therapy. At first he couldn't write, and I read to him on the couch, and that was the extent of it. It actually helped him cognitively. I started grading in the middle of November. He was ready, and even hurried up and won NaNoWriMo (HUGE!!!!!!) He still has a lot of days off at this point, because of other issues concerning the concussion, but, he's getting a's in everything since I started grading. But he definitely won't have his hours by the end of the school year. Should I just consider the start of the school year a wash, and note that he didn't start his year until November 15? That might be a better way to handle it.
  8. Makes sense Regentrude. Interesting. I have a lot to think about. We don't have cover schools in PA, so that's not a worry.
  9. Oh really? Only in academic subjects? I hadn't thought of that. Is that what is expected?
  10. For High School transcripts, do you usually put all semester grades, or just the final grade for each class? I'm just wondering, because I JUST started recording grades for the year (Son is suffering from Post Concussion Syndrome, grades in the beginning of the year mean nothing, since he can't remember anything, and was completely impaired). If you need to record in semesters, how would I mark the first semester. He did do work, but it wasn't representative of him in the least, I mean, honestly, he couldn't even pick up a pencil and write. It was mostly just discussion and reading. Nothing more. We just started Geometry and Science a little before Thanksgiving. Thanks!
  11. Thank you, that's exactly what I was thinking. I'll have to start a search.
  12. PS, I realize we could skip science for the year, but the idea of skipping anything upsets my son. He wants to keep progressing, anyway he can, which means a ton of help from me.
  13. Some of you probably remember what happened with my son over the summer. Severe concussion, and skull fracture from a Longboarding accident. Now he's suffering from Post Concussion Syndrome. He's 14 and in 9th grade... In a non-concussed state he is smart, and ahead of the game in all things but math (not gifted, but smart and highly motivated). We were going to do Biology this year, but we need to take a step back in a number of things, 1) because of the concussion, obviously, and 2) the person that "gave" us a microscope asked for it back (not that he could deal with a microscope right now anyway, still has blurry vision). 3) The homeschool group that we are a part of will be offering Biology next year, taught by an actual biologist. So, for these reasons, I think waiting until 10th might be a good idea for him. So, my question is, once he's able to do school, what could I do with him for science. Something resembling high school level (remembering that he is not going to be full capacity for a while). I will probably be reading to him, and writing for him a little bit into his school year. He already did Physical Science last year. Maybe something like Astronomy, without a math component. Maybe a simpler version of Anatomy? (but, that probably should come after bio, right?). Anything interesting, that will not make him feel like he's wasting a year, but will be easy on his brain. We did so much earth and life science before this point, I think it would bore him to tears. The Doctor does want us to start some sort of school work with him, and to gradually add to it, with help, of course. I've figured out how to handle every other subject. Just not science. Thanks, Abby
  14. My son took all high school courses in 8th, and I'm not counting it for 9th. In my mind, it just means that he has the chance to go much more in depth in the later years of High School. Also, I'm a Graphic Designer, someone said that she should take that extra time and develop her portfolio. I could not agree more. Most schools have a requirement of a portfolio review to be admitted into their Graphic Design and / or Media Arts programs, and to be honest, they can be brutal... or they can be just another hoop to jump through, either way, she needs to be fully prepared. Giving her the extra year to work on that, is a good idea. Also, look up AIGA, which is the trade organization for Graphic Designers. They often have free portfolio reviews for students. I highly recommend going to one of these, they will guide her in what she needs to do to get her portfolio ready.
  15. I haven't read all of the replies, so I don't know if this has been mentioned. Why doesn't she look into Graphic Design. There are jobs out there, and she can be successful being creative?
  16. I've been using copaiba on my joints (Lupus), I do feel better than I did before, but I've also started yoga and tai chi, so I'm not sure if it's the copaiba or not. The copaiba actually worked well on my son's acne, but so does tea tree oil.
  17. I recently bought Miller-Levine Dragon Fly book for super cheap, used on amazon. We received it, and I really like the book. There are labs included in the book that look good. I highly suggest it.
  18. We are going to start little art projects here and there. He doesn't like audio books, but I did try. He just wasn't into it. He's taking photography this year, and we are friends with the teacher, so she is going to start sending little projects for him to do, here and there. Nothing major, just something to make him feel like he can do something. I'm just afraid to do too much, because he always pays for it the next day. I've asked friends to send him funny cards, so he's been getting a lot of those, and that's lifted his spirits A LOT. Never underestimate the power of a simple card, this is the lesson I've learned from this. From now on, I'm going to make sure to send people cards, and lots of them.
  19. *****UPDATE***** Thank you all for your kind words, and information. Because of you guys, we found a concussion center to treat him! Thank you!. I had no idea where to go with this. His brain has no swelling, bruising, or bleeding at this time. So that's good. But, he's still having double peripheral vision, and will sometimes have tunnel vision. He is unbalanced on his right side, and still has a really bad headache. But, I feel like there is progress, or he's just getting used to it, I'm not sure which. He isn't as confused as he was, so that's good. His short term memory is getting better, but still has some problems. The Neurologist with the concussion center said "no" to camp, so he's really sad that his friends are there, and he is here. His Godbrother has Post Concussion Syndrome, so he comes to the house, and they sit and do simple things together, quietly, and that has lifted his spirits. He'll start balance training and eye movement therapy after his skull fracture is healed, but we aren't there yet. I was wondering if maybe something like Tai Chi would also help his balance? We were planning to start school on Aug 18th, but I'm starting to think that's not going to happen, or maybe it will happen with just videos. I know it's more than a month away, but his progress is so slow. I'm trying not to freak out about everything, and trying to stay calm. But, I hate that he's missing his entire summer. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart!!!!!!
  20. My boys always say "wi" instead of "with." It drives me nuts. But my oldest used to say "mini-the-mote" instead of remote, and that's what I've called it ever since.
  21. I'm adding it in with World History this coming year. When we study the history if Africa, we'll do a unit on the geography if Africa. Etc... I'm just using Georgia virtual school, linked through Easy Peasy. We are in pa, so our evaluator said we could do this, but to make sure we have enough hours for both. So, I log them under different classes, and I have to have at least 120 logs for a full credit and 60 for a half credit. I'll give a credit for world history and a half credit for geography. It just made more sense to group them together, at least in my mind.
