  1. To the OP, it can be parent intensive because it includes discussion. With more than one level it is a little harder as well. BUT, if your child gets to the point where they are independent a lot of the discussion can happen at the dinner table, during a drive to activity or before bed. The absolutely best thing about it, is NO RESEARCH for the best way to teach ABorC. It is ready to go. It takes some getting used to but my kids have really liked it. I like it because I have more time to FB and check forums instead of planning how to learn about adjectives or something. Some folks use just one part, language or science, but I have used the entire curriculum since the first level. We have a relaxed process so we move slowly through the material, but I can see my children using the information they have acquired in their daily lives.
  2. Moving Beyond the Page isn't exactly unit studies. It is organized by units but it works a little bit differently that just exploring one topic like "apples" or "horses" or "Australia".
  3. A big portion of the money goes to the literature. But you can cut the price nearly in half if you can get the books used or at the library.
  4. GREAT!!! I have been posting it to facebook, pinterest... everywhere. I'd love to see this made!!
  5. I found this movie online, it is AWESOME... Take a look, see what you think. I find it hard to believe that this is photography. I am totally supporting this project!!!
  6. Both of my daughters loved it but I only used the trial membership. I couldn't ever commit to it. I didn't like it at all at first but then by the end of the week, or two, I had changed my mind. But not enough to buy it and definitely not enough to use as a stand alone.
  7. Eat at a place that is a combo grocery store and small market type food called Eataly.. 5th avenue and 25th street They have FABULOUS coffee and great pizza and food. It is a busy busy place and it is huge... And while this restaurant is a bit irreverent it has some of the BEST soft serve ice cream I've ever eaten..... And I happen to love a good deli and Katz's is south of the ice cream shop. If you just want to have fun I guess I imagine that to include lots of food. haha.... nothing educational there! Have a great visit and remember the Q goes to Brooklyn not the World Trades Center!!!
  8. I have never heard of OLLY, and I don't like Scholaric, so I am sticking with skedtrack for now. BUT.... looking at OLLY... I may try the free trial.
  9. Yes, You have add your students again to the new school year. eta: Curious where you found the lesson plans to import. I haven't done that at all yet.
  10. I've tie dyed with my 6yo eons ago. Our focus in fabric arts has been machine and hand sewing, and this year we're starting cross stitch.
  11. I've asked them about it before, and they weren't sure about it. What happens is that sometimes, if I schedule one at three weeks and the other at four weeks. That at some point they will end up being on the same day. It isn't like they alternate weeks.. there is no way that I can see for them to alternate weeks. It just isn't in the programming. But it seems like there might be a way after the school year starts. To change the course after the first week. But, not sure.. and not really wanting to wait...
  12. You have to make sure all the courses "SHARE THE DAY' check the box to the left of that.... Otherwise your first course 'OWNS THE DAY' and will be the only thing scheduled...
  13. When inputing new courses for the school year, has anyone had good luck using the Repeat every: Week, Two weeks, Three weeks, Four Weeks I'd like to alternate two courses every other week, but have no idea how to input it. Any suggestions? What I will end up doing is assigning both courses to every week and will just alternate marking them as done. So it will change the school hours. Or I could just give the course a / in the name, and count it as two aspects of the same course. :auto:
  14. It takes the rest of your life. Ha ha.. Thyroid issues can go in and out of whack so it isn't something that is so easy to say, X amount of weeks and you'll be feeling like your old self again. Likely you will never feel like your old self again. But, usually about six weeks after taking the meds you could be feeling better.
  15. Yes, you need the RightStart Teacher's book and student activity books. You will likely be able to group them together. Rightstart B contains a quicker version of RS A. But depending on the ages of your children you might want to get just B. The RightStart folks are great about answering questions if you need to contact them directly.
  16. I did start over with one child we went nearly back to the start. but it was worth it. Also try playing addition war, that one is fast and it works with all the facts. We're on lesson 63.. Also, I know a lot of folks supplement, but this is meant to be stand alone. Maybe going back and forth between written and visual is an issue as well. Just throwing something out there.
  17. My six yo uses RightStart and she still guesses sometimes, but usually only with direct questions. If you decide to switch check out RightSTart. Also try to set up some games that use math and see if their fact suddenly appear when they need them.
  18. I:iagree: I love it. It makes it hard for me to think about teaching math in any other way.
  19. I am bored with oatmeal and eggs. Any suggestions? Esp easy ones.
  20. Weird. I never even once thought about it. It seems like we like the words with latin and french roots but any words with German roots can forget about it. I use it and think it is sort of odd that there is aproblem. I can't fathom why? I can understand why Pissed off is problem because it has such a visual associated with it. And then again, maybe some folks find sucking rude as well.
  21. LOL.. I am in an attendance state. And I've never so eloquently described the wackiness of attendance as you did. Yes. Mac means Skedtrack or Scholaric at this point. I love Skedtrack and I hate scholaric. I don't need hours but somehow feel reassured seeing it. The only bad thing about Skedtrack, or really any hour tracking, is that you have to do it. For me, I set up the school year, set-up the course, then input all the activities for all the courses. For me that meant going through the books, and typing Lesson 1, Lesson 2,etc, and/or page numbers for what seemed to be a lesson in something like phonics. I do have to go back and change this based on what we get done. Skedtrack makes it easy to change the amount of time. For example, if I made the default time for math 30 minutes and it actually took us 60 I can change it. Or if we did only have of Lesson 1, I can change the activity to reflect that and to make sure that we do the rest of Lesson 1. I love Skedtrack it has totally changed how I get things done. I don't know why, it just worked for me in a way that paper, excel or anything else did. But having Mac I did feel very limited in what I could do. hth
  22. I know that these are old quotes but they still amused me none-the-less. Yesterday took me seven hours to clean the kitchen because I kept sneaking off to check facebook, the newest equivalent to daydreaming. Same as with my daughter i suppose when it takes her an hour to write two sentences. It didn't really interfere with something we needed to do, and I suppose she was thinking some cool stuff.
  23. I copied some a couple of sheets at Staples, but it was 50 cents a sheet. So, you might consider looking for transparencies of the painting you wanted to cover. I own a few, but got them second hand so wouldn't even know where to begin looking, other than google of course.
  24. On my wish list.... My grandmother, auntie and mother all use this script. Well, technically my grandmother doesn't she died. But still she did use it. Whenever I look at their writing I HAVE to read it to tell whose it is!
  25. Mostly I found this discussion interesting because so much of it revolved around schools and the children in them. What about giftedness at home? How to best support or measure that? And if our children aren't thought of as gifted by the parents who teach them, then who? And accomplishments same thing, by what projects and whose scale if they're at home. And if you mention testing what about the families who won't do testing because of the cost? Maybe enroll them in school for a week or two every spring to take the state tests? While it was an interesting discussion it did little to help homeschooled children who may or may not be gifted. IMO of course.
