  1. Initially leaving Austria was a train to Italy. When WWII broke out they were no longer safe in Italy, since Italy was aligned with the Nazis. They went to London and then to the US. After their visas were up in the US, they went on a concert tour in Scandinavia. They briefly visited Saltzburg at some point during this time, but did not live there, and it's unclear if the Nazis were aware of their presence officially. Then they went back to the US more permanently and eventually settled down in Vermont. I'm pretty sure Maria writes about this in her biography, though I can't remember for sure, but quick googling here are some sources: http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/winter/von-trapps.html http://www.parade.com/238419/erinhill/what-happened-to-the-real-von-trapp-family/ I know the Encyclopedia Britannica that I used as a kit concurs with this account too.
  2. Actually, they took a train to Italy. Georg was an Italian an citizen because the town he was born in was annexed to Italy in 1920. From there an American booking agent brought them to the US.
  3. Correction - I mean Austria, not yet Nazi Germany. But still, not a lot of racial diversity there.
  4. Just started on the west coast. Black nuns in the 1940s? In Nazi Germany in particular? Yeah, that is not at all accurate.

  6. Quinoa is technically not a grain, it is a seed. But from a nutritional/digestive standpoint it is considered a grain. It is not considered paleo because of this. If I were ruling out grains for autoimmune disease, I would rule out quinoa. When reintroducing to see if the food actually aggravates symptoms, I would introduce quinoa before other official grains, though.
  7. I'm assuming she's not allergic to eggs, just doens't like them? You could easily hide them in things if that is the case. Yummy things, like paleo pancakes, waffles biscuits, muffins, etc. made with almond or coconut flours. I usually serve things like that with a side of sausage, bacon, or ham.
  8. An alumni of my sorority helped develop those! They look super neat. I can't wait to try them out next year with my boys (hopefully!).
  9. I really like SM. I have a 6yo working through 1b right now. He finished 1a in 10 weeks! I haven't been using the HIG with him unless he doesn't understand something. He's fairly "mathy" and it's been easy for him, so I don't see the point in making him do activities to teach things he already knows. With my older son I used the HIG with 2A/2B and I wouldn't do it without. That being said, he really didn't like singapore (wasn't his style - did not like me instructing him and found the workbook "boring"), so I switched him to BA and am supplementing with SM, particularly the mental math part and any part that is not covered in BA.
  10. Yes, exactly. In a harness the head moves forward while the shoulders are held back more. In a seatbelt the whole upper body moves more, putting less strain on the neck.
  11. If you look at crash test footage, the seatbelt allows the head to move forward more than a 5 point harness.
  12. Fortunately I'm not hosting. But right now I'm sitting on the forums rather than loading my dishwasher and starting stuff for tomorrow that I'm bringing (and I haven't finished dinner yet either).
  13. You're going to find the best prices booking either the day the bookings open or if there is a really good last minute special for your cruise. For us, we booked our upcoming cruise the day it was released for booking and the rates have not been cheaper than that since we booked (though we did need a cabin that sleeps 5, it may be different for other categories). I checked the special rates that were released for our cruise a couple weeks back and it was $1500 more for us than the day we booked. So if you can plan ahead, I would. A heads up on shorter cruises. The first day you will get on the ship sometime in the vicinity of lunch time. There is a muster drill that day that is mandatory (safety drill) as well as the bon voyage deck party - you'll also be spending time getting your cabin set up, etc. On the last day you leave the ship early in the morning (I believe you have to be off by 9 or 9:30. So when you're thinking of days to "fill", there is not all that much time on the boat those two days. Also any day your ship is in port, you can sign up for (at extra cost) excursions. So even though we're going on a 7 night cruise, we have 4 days where we won't be on the boat as we're in port, then we have the first and last day, so we only have 2 full days on the boat where we can't get off, if that makes sense. From what I've read on disboards, there is a lot to do on the boat. Though I am also the type that will be happy sitting on deck reading my kindle while the kids are in the kids clubs. On a 3 night bahama cruise you'll leave florida, spend the next day in nassau, the next day at castaway cay, and then get off the ship the following morning back in florida. On a 4 night bahama cruise you'll do exactly the same thing, but with a sea day in between. Personally, I think those would feel REALLY short, but that's just me. I can let you know how we like it when we go in January! You should also check out disboards.
  14. The speed limits varied state to state, as each state set their own law. It was January 2, 1974 when Nixon set the national maximum speed limit to 55mph due to the oil crisis. It was repealed on November 28, 1995. So from 1974-1995 the maximum speed limit was 55mph. Before then, it was up to the states and varied greatly, and that is now the case today.
  15. Yes, and outgrown harness is less safe than a booster every time. And sadly I've seen kids in outgrown harnesses because they are "safer" harnessed and parents don't want to buy another harnessed seat. The message gets mixed up sometimes when people get overzealous about harnessing.
  16. There is no data saying one is safer with a child who is old enough/mature enough/large enough for a booster. The swedes actually believe that ffing harnessing is unsafe, and go from rfing to boosters at 4-5 years old. I personally booster as soon as my kids are ready, as I think restraining older/heavier children at both shoulders increases the neck load as they get bigger. There is less "give" to absorbing the impact on the upper body in a ffing 5 point harness than there is in a regular seatbelt with a booster. 5 point harnesses are not always tested with larger/heavier kids. They use mathematics to figure out what the forces will most likely be. Of course this is also at 35mph, not 60mph.
  17. Now think about your fiberglass POS car being hit by a hummer. Or a semi. At 70mph (speed limit on the freeway closest to me). Now think about your steel car getting hit by a hummer, or a semi, at 55mph (which is what most of the freeway speed limits used to be). TOTALLY different scenario and outcomes.
  18. Actually, there is a law about expired car seats. Almost every state law has some sort of statement in it that says children have to be "secured properly" in an appropriate child restraint for certain ages. Securing a child in an expired seat is not properly securing them (just like using a baby bucket forward facing would not be properly securing the child). As for buckets versus convertibles, all car seats expire in 5-10 years, depending on the seat. There are none that do not expire.
  19. I get bad headaches when I eat gluten. It can be something "usual" that triggers them. You might want to look into foods that trigger migraines and see if eliminating the main ones helps at all.
  20. Would it be possible to ask that if she insists on gifts that she gift experiences instead of material things? My Dad and Step Mom, instead of birthday gifts for my kids, take them on a special outing. For example, this past year they took my oldest to the museum of flight, my youngest to the zoo, and my middle child to the care museum. They have great memories and got to spend a day bonding.
  21. Even if you're not comfortable with induction, being somewhere where they will give you time to go into labor on your own and are supportive of VBAC is HUGE! And there are non-pitocin ways to induce. If you can find a good naturopath or midwife, they can give you herbs that can help kick things into gear too. So there are lots of options.
  22. ALL US car seats are tested at 35mph. That's why there was a huge hullabaloo a few years back when Consumer Reports tested them at higher speeds.
  23. Possibly, but its WAY more relevant to the 2nd book than the 3rd. I mean the whole force field thing especially.
  24. I thought they did a great job with this movie. I loved how they portrayed the arena - I was worried about that. I did miss the back story. Haymich's back story really explains a lot about how they knew how to get out of the arena, as well as why he is the way he is. It also adds some depth to why Katniss and the other tributes have to be compliant, or they risk their loved ones being hurt. I did think too many of the tributes were young. Mathematically, if the 3 "strong" districts win a majority, there would be more middle-aged people and older people as tributes. They all looked to be 25 or younger other than nuts and bolts and mags. Just not statistically how it could be. I hadn't heard they are doing 2 more movies. I'm guessing $$$$ because it could easily be one - long - but one.
  25. I personally am not comfortable going over, knowing how the physics work, even if the radian says it's ok. They don't test car seats at high speeds (they test at 35mph). I would see how long it takes him to hit the top slot being even with his shoulder and then see what age/weight he is at. Most kids can sit properly in a booster by the time they are 6. There is no data that shows harnessing is safer for an older child, or that a booster is safer. Parental decision. Sweden, where they keep kids rfing utnil 4 and have the lowest rate of deaths in vehicle crashes for children, go straight to boosters after the seat is outgrown rfing and they believe ffing harnessing is not safe.
