  1. Good morning, I hope your morning is less spammy than the boards this morning! :)
  2. I quickly created a fake one for my son. It came up as two pages. Maybe save your work. Log out of the program, then re-log in and see if that fixes the problem.
  3. That looks good, Carrie, however it didn't just deal with middle school/high school. I think I might still purchase that and listen to it. Here's the link in case anyone else is interested in it. https://peacehillpress.com/p/teaching-students-to-work-independently-mp3/#Overview
  4. We'd be better off financially if I'd keep my nose out of curriculum websites and stop looking at all the "shiny new things!" PS high school around here runs approx. $200 -250 per grade.
  5. Not a curriculum but a fun geography game site. http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm My son was able to place all the countries in the world within a few miles of where they should be on the map. I was impressed. Now, when I want to know where a country is I ask him and he tells me! LOL
  6. It's sort of like tomato staking. My understanding is tomato staking is used when child is not behaving as you would like them too. This article was more about how we are too quick to assume a child can be left alone to do their school work and how we should be present to help them and encourage them.
  7. I remember a homeschool article or blog post or book?? where the author talked about how you should expect a younger child to work within arms length of you and as they get into high school they can move physically farther from you, for example into another room. Maybe Susan wrote it? Does this spark any remembrance from anyone else?
  8. Like Pippen mentioned have your children get their wills when they turn 18. It makes a great birthday gift! LOL If you have a family member with a mental health illness you need to be prepared ahead of time. We had the added headache of helping our bipolar dd get her paperwork in order just in case she was to descent into a state of mania again, we with her dr's blessing can take control of her financial and medical needs. She realized this was important because she could see how she was taken advantage of when she last went through mania before the her diagnosis of bipolar was finally given. Talk with lawyers, the bank, all the doctors & hospitals, services providers your child currently uses and anyone you think of. We were able to sign paper work across all the services that will allow us to help her in the future, if it's needed. If you own a business that is time sensitive (for us that is a dairy farm with cows that need to be milked, etc) then please have conversations with family members on how to proceed if something was to take you out of the picture with the day to day operations. We've had to step in and help a family sell everything quickly because the man (un married, no kids) ran everything on his farm and his sibling had left the farm decades earlier. They had no clue how many animals needed tending and didn't even think about the animals until the next day. Luckily we heard the afternoon that he died and quickly made arrangements to take care of his animals until family could arrive - days later. Could you image how terrible that would have been for the animals?
  9. Honestly, if she was in that big of a hurry. She shouldn't shop at Cost-co. Don't give her a second thought.
  10. Does this help? http://www.ehow.com/how_5646450_remove-mold-mildew-aluminum.html
  11. Will be 4 at then end of this year. In Ontario, Canada it's called Junior Kindergarten.
  12. Hello PreK Hivers, My great niece will be in my care part days starting tomorrow until Sept. She has to go to school in Sept, this is not an option and I'm not happy about it but I can't change this either. She can't count to 10 yet, can only sing theme songs from TV shows. Has basically no motor control with a pencil or crayon. Doesn't know colors or shapes. She can put on her velcro shoes and do the buttons up on her coat. She is potty trained and handles things well herself. I think I should be starting from the beginning but here's the thing. I didn't start homeschooling until my kids were older. So, I'm a tad lost here. If you were handed this case, what would you do? What resources would you use and what blogs, etc would you read up on.
  13. Here is another article. http://www.curbed.com/2016/2/19/11079960/home-schooling-gets-highdesign-in-new-wsj-profile
  14. TechWife, I had to open the calculator app twice! By the time I went to type in how old I was the first time I had forgotten the number already!
  15. Maybe, it's something to do with being in the 40's range. I can never remember how old I am either. I am currently 43. In July, I'll be 44.
  16. We used Runkle's Physical Geography for a world geography credit and now we are using Contact Canada for a required Canadian geography credit.
  17. Our toddler (he is now 15) made it outside to "go drive the tractors" We didn't even see him get up or leave. He walked by the livingroom where we were watching TV and made it across the large farm yard to the tractors. No longer, do I assume when I hear a small child was found alone unattended blocks away from their home that the parents are neglectful. We wouldn't have even noticed he was gone except something inside of me told me to check his room before I went to mine. That is when we noticed he was gone. Thank the Lord, it was a nice warm summer night.
  18. What subjects is your husband comfortable teaching? What does he think is his strengths and weaknesses? If he makes math fun, then find a more hands on program for him to teach. If math is a troublesome subject to him, then look to farm that out completely online. You might consider using something like Monarch. https://www.aop.com/monarch_overviewif you want to make it easy for grading. Switched on Schoolhouse could be a cheaper way to do the same thing as Monarch. You could also check out http://allinonehomeschool.com/ It is a free program and it would be easy to add in extra book readings.
  19. My dd will be living off campus for her second year at an agricultural college. We are wondering what should be in the room contract? She has two choices. Both are the same price. Both are in equally safe locations. Both places are 7-12 mins away from the college. One is in a private home with 4 other boarders. All girls. Previous boarders said the wall are so thin you could here the next person think. They provide all three meals, except on weekends but you can use the kitchen. Our dd comes home on the weekends so this doesn't really matter. The other room is in a newly renovated motel. It has a pool. She would get a continental breakfast each morning. There is a kitchenette she can use everyday for lunch and dinner. OR she could pay extra and eat at the college but she doesn't like the food there. The motel makes the bulk of their money during non-school months. So, they are working hard to attract the students. The contract is handwritten. They are just starting this for Sept. They even asked the students what they thought should be in the contract. Do any of you have any examples of rooming contracts or concerns you think we should be aware of? We don't know anyone who has lived in a motel before. So, please send us advice! :)
  20. No, I'm in Ontario. This is so sad.
  21. My son used http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm I was amazed how accurately my son learned to place all the countries in the world. Also, it's free. :)
  22. After an hour of searching to find it again. Check this out: http://civicschannel.com/textbook.html Now, I'm going to add it to my Pinterest board so I can find it when I need it!
