  1. MFW, but I only do CLE for math, not LA.
  2. CLE is straightforward, clear explanations, and solid. It is motivating for my kids to work through a Light unit and move on to the next.
  3. CLE math is awesome, the kids like it and get it done w/out issue. I don't think it's behind at all. We used the LA and Reading, some Social Studies. They were good, but I found it not to be our style, too many workbooks. Some kids like that, though.
  4. In case you change your mind about the subscription, we did the Mark Kistler one through HSBC and my sons drawing has really taken off in just a couple weeks. They love it. It is just drawing though, not other mediums.
  5. Now we just need to get them to "sticky" the thread about the high school time-table!!! That was so helpful to me! The one that is there looks really good, too. I'll be sitting down to go through it when I have a few more minutes. :)
  6. I've never heard of the VHSG, so thanks for that resource!
  7. We just went through this last week in our house. My ds has been in school before, so knows the atmosphere, but there were some electives and extra-curriculars he's been wanting to do. Our school district is an all or nothing, you have to be there full-time, or part time and the other their virtual school. Our son chose based on academics, he prefers the curriculum he'd study here, as opposed to there. We will outsource some of the extras. I don't have a lot of advice for you, i'm sorry. I am curious to hear other peoples thoughts about taking all honors classes. I would think that would mean a heavy load homework-wise, and in your situation, I don't think i'd push it in the LA- at least this year. Maybe take some other honors classes and see how the language arts goes?
  8. My oldest is still working through it, w/out the DVD's, no problem. He still hates grammar, but he's scoring very well with it. :D
  9. My ds just turned 12 end of July, and will be starting 6th grade next week. :)
  10. This is a great thread, although i'm having a bit of a panic attack reading it all. LOL It would be great if we could get this "stickied" to the top of the forum. SO helpful!
  11. My Fathers World has lesson plans for this, we are using them this year. There is also a multi-media companion CD for this curriculum. :)
  12. MFW AHL CLE Algebra Apologia Biology Writing Class with local group Analytical Grammar (last 2 sessions) Mark Kistler on-line (looking for other drawing options) I am looking into a drafting course, and foreign language. Co-op with gym, music, art Scouts and 4H
  13. Thanks Sebastian! I really appreciate the resources you've listed, and will be taking a look at them. :)
  14. We went to the meeting this morning, the counselor was very nice. However, she has only been with the school for several weeks, and informed us that she was hired because she came from a school that had a virtual school. So her job is to get the virtual school up and running for our district. From there, it was a selling pitch on participating in that program. My son was considering the school because of three things: art (drawing), drafting and writing. He can't do the drawing until he has a year of fundamentals, drafting he could do, they don't offer the creative writing he wants until his junior year. He also can't participate in those program areas unless he is enrolled full time, or enrolled in the virtual school. After looking at the course descriptions, he's just not interested in their core curricula when compared to what he could do at home. So, we're continuing on with homeschooling high school. It's been a stressful week, but we've come out a lot smarter. I am more aware of what our district does offer, i've taken a closer look at their curricula as well as what we chose for homeschool and compared them, which gave me more confidence in our choices . I am also more aware of how much some of these areas of interest mean to him, so am motivated to find sources to help him achieve his goals. I'll be starting a new thread for help on those. :) Thanks for the help everyone. We're staying the course of homeschooling, so you'll see many more posts from me. :)
  15. My hesitation wouldn't be the books so much as the age range of the kids. I would be hard pressed to put my just-turning-12 year old into that mix, with those books. I don't think he'd get anything out of it. As always, it doesn't matter what the majority says. You know your kids, if YOU are uncomfortable with those choices with your kids, go with that. :)
  16. 53% of students took the test (2010-11 school year) with an average composite of 22.4. They had 23 listed on their flyer.
  17. I found a few things, but what stands out to me is their average score for the ACT is 23. From what I know about ACT (which is limited at this point) I would want my son to score higher than that. But what does that kind of score say about the school?
  18. Thanks everyone, i'm taking notes and doing some digging.
  19. I have some questions that came to mind regarding this thread. Some background quick: My son has been homeschooled the last two years, this would be our third. He has been thinking he'd like to go to public high school, he'd be a freshman. His reasons for this are the electives that they offer, some of the clubs and extra-curriculars (though he's not a sports kid). We have an appointment set up for Saturday morning with the guidance counselor. What questions would you ask? After reading threads like the one I mentioned "My class is not going well..", I wonder if I should be asking for the results of their testing, how the kids coming out of this school are scoring? I'm really struggling with this decision, and if anyone has any advice on how to choose, I would really, really appreciate it.
  20. We are starting CtG in a week or so. Good information in here to have, thanks! :)
  21. Better Homes and Gardens 1953 edition. It was their most requested ever edition of the cookbook, they reproduced that particular edition identically a few years ago and sold it again.
  22. Hey, you're not alone. :) We're heading into our third year homeschooling, my first year with a high schooler. While I wouldn't say we've "aced" this homeschool thing, I cannot deny that it's been wonderful for my kids mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Academics are just one part of the picture, and with all the wonderful curriculums out there, it certainly can be done, and done well. My ds also wants to be an author, so we've decided on MFW AHL for this year. There are LOTS to choose from, though, that are all good.
  23. I just read about this program here a few days ago myself. I've been eyeing up Atelier, but the price has given me pause. My 3rd grade daughter watched a couple of the free videos from HAS and liked them, did the projects right away. I also have a ds going into 6th, so it's good to hear she recommends 3rd for both of them! Many thanks! :)
