  1. Depends on the editions. The really really old ones that are hard covered with a tree aren’t that bad. I’d pass on the newer ones.
  2. Me again. We made it through it! I dragged my feet (I'm horrible about game prep), but once we got going it went well. He did improve about a grade and a half. So the question is: now what? I have no solid plan for language arts and open to suggestions.
  3. I felt Barefoot Meanderings wayfarer was a inbetween of story of the world and layer of learning. http://barefootmeandering.com/site/wayfarers/ We had tried Story of the world and activity guide once. Had big plans. In the end just ended up listening to the audiobooks in the car. I spent ages debating wayfarers and layers of learning two year ago. Actually bought both. Never made a final decision because a co-op formed locally and any concerns about bias went out the window. As much as I loathe the history curriculum the co-op uses the delight and happiness of my extrovert kiddo wins.
  4. We've been been doing memory work for a few weeks now and are loving it... The only thing I'm not loving is the box of cards... They get wet or they get lost. I'm musing about making it digital somehow, the only thing I can think of using is PowerPoint. While I think powerpoint could get the job done I'm curious if anyone else went digital, what did they use, and how did it go. I fear that as annoying as the cards are there is something nice about being able to physically hold them
  5. Quick question: do you know the release dates for the other "how to teach" videos? Or if they are already posted (I can't seem to find them) a link for them?
  6. Based on a suggestion you made in another post I think your syllables program may be in our future. Eldest child just turned 9. He reads at a second grade level. Spelling wise vowels seem to trip him up the most especially short vowel i. We've curriculum jump so many times because I could never quite figure out placement for him. I am to the point of just starting at the very beginning of something and working through it. Which I have been avoiding because the thought of starting at the very beginning was kind of depressing but I am realizing it's just something we will have to do. I did look at the syllables program before and got overwhelmed and confused on what to do. Are the videos for me to watch or for the student? How long is a lesson? How often should the lessons be done? I recall you saying to not do any other reading program while going through the syallable program. Should I also drop assigned reading as well while working through it?
  7. My littles like Toco Baco, Sago Mini, pea pod labs, and duck duck moose apps.
  8. We had a desktop and when I went to set it up for the kids it was so old that it ran so painfully slow. So we had to get something new or atleast with a current operating system. DH wanted to get something grand and over the top, but I looked at our needs and they were few and simple. Be able for the kids to Internet based things like nessy and starfall and othe homeschool type things during the week. And on the weeks be able for the kids to play the minecraft and terreria and other games. Nothing graphic intensive nothing latest and greatest. Figured if the kids ever needed something more they would be old enough to express their needs and even do the reasearch and find the something better, but I think that a few years off. Being we had all the accessories for a laptop ( keyboard, mouse, and monitor) I went with this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AZC4NHS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 A intel computer stick. Plug into into an hdmi monitor and plug in a mouse and keyboard, get it power, and turn it on. Set up was a breeze, though took awhile for all the window updates to download. We've been using it since July and I'm very pleased with it.
  9. Ugh this month is full of going here and there around lunch. I'd like to pack a cooler incase we get hungry while out so as not to kill the budget by constantly eating out. No food allergies expect I'm very pregnant (so no deli meats) and I swear one kid only eats ham and ketchup sandwiches.
  10. When I think of social studies I think of state and country studies. So I'll toss out wee folk arts new country studies https://homeschoolcompanion.com/curriculum-themes-guides/cultural-connections-overview/cultural-france-kenya-japan/ I've only done their preschool curriculum And Memoria press state and capitals. The rest is me goofing off on the internet so can't vouch for them lol: Highlight has something called top secret adventures https://www.highlights.com/store/puzzle-book-clubs/top-secret-adventures homeschool co-op has a thing where can order it in regional bundles and not have it be a subscription https://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/highlights-travel-adventures/ Core knowledge has from free units https://www.coreknowledge.org/curriculum/download-curriculum/ https://culturedowl.com/collections/all Is a country box by mail Lakeshore learning has some pricey social studies boxes
  11. We use OurPact. We been using it for years since before they had a paid account so we are grandfathered into a free version of the $2 a month plan. I keep eyeing the premium plan. When it first came out I could not imagine paying $5 a month for parental control but there are days recently were I've debated the thought of letting apps be aviable all the time and permentatly blocking others vs an all or nothing is tempting. But then the kids do things they should and we are now screen free for a few weeks so don't have to worry about it again for a few weeks lol.
  12. Oh thank goodness I thought I was the only one! Past few years I painfully went through them, this year I got some kumon workbooks and that made everyone happy. Will look into the other suggestions though.
  13. I looked at a lot of old blog post: Since 2014 it's been the first Monday and Tuesday of August. In 2015 they added a bonus oops I forgot something one day sale two weeks later one was on a Monday the other Wednesday Before 2014 it was still a two day sale. It more towards the middle of August.
  14. Eldest is 8 almost 9 and we start Math Mammoth at the very beginning when he was 5. We are halfway through grade three. Middle has started and is about a quarter of the way through first. It was my get it down subject, just do the next page or pages and it always got done. But sometime in the spring we just stopped. It wasn't getting done. We got through the multiplication and Eldest didn't really have any level of mastery over the facts. We moved into the other things like measurements but were just bored. I pick up the kumon multiplication workbook and their measurement workbook and Eldest does a page each day happily. That and a half hour of prodigy math every other day. He is currently using them as review, not learning new stuff. But I'm wondering where do i go once he finishes the two workbooks. Do i get more kumon workbooks (i feel it's not as thorough as math mammoth), do we go back to math mammoth (but the thought of going back kind of makes me cry), or try something completely new (open to suggestions: ideally i'd like a five-ten minute mom led lesson with some guided problems with a page or so of independent practice) And then there is Middle who would love a cut and paste format math curriculum lol.
  15. I think you are looking for math drills by instant interactive. It's offline. Supports multiple users. And you have to key in your answer.
  16. Looking for some fun summer edu-tainment options but my brain is drawing a blank all my brain can think of is Prodigy math Grammaropolis Reading eggs Math seeds I know there are more. Anyone have any suggestions? I suppose I could also call it the summer of free trials lol
  17. We had a honey stair stepper twin over full by discovery world furniture. We bought it locally and got to climb all over it before buying. I really liked it, alas we had to get rid of it because military sent us somewhere where the only room it would fit was the master and even if we set it up in there the ceiling was too low. Also check Craigslist. When we moved to a permanent home we got another twin over full but with just a ladder. I found the older bunk beds to be more solidly built than what one can get in stores currently.
  18. Eldest: letter and their sounds by two. Able to blend and read Cvc words right before he turned six. Middle: letter around three, their sounds four, able to read cvc words just before six.
  19. I didn't think much of it until I was able to see it in person. But the simple Charlotte mason journaling a year of nature was the little nudge out the door that I needed. Granted I haven't graduated past it but it's better than nothing. I bought a physical copy last year, but got the PDF this year and ran the art paper through the printer (which said some nasty words but it survived). I like that it's split into seasons and has weekly prompts.
  20. I'm really drawn to a year of playing skillfully. The price is depressing. I like how it's multiage. I don't do Pinterest. I need lots of hand holding for play based learning. Talk me into or out if this please.
  21. Did you look at the sample? It's the first three week with heaps of additional information http://barefootmeandering.com/site/wayfarers/
  22. Endless alphabet though we never bought the paid version I write words was the first app I ever bought and has been a fan favorite for three kids so far Peapod labs has some neat abc apps the food one was the most popular one here along with their math ones
  23. Maybe look to see if there is one of these near you: Claritas classical academy Or Eden Hope academy
