  1. I keep going back and forth on what we are going to to for Eldest for high school. Eldest is in 8th grade. Because of his dyslexia he is stronger in math, but he isn't mathy. He is my creative artistic one. While a simple store bought curriculum would be "easier," it would only get done because I dragged him every step of the way. I think following his interests more than just letting him pick out the store bought curriculum is going to have to happen. My biggest hang up is output needed. And how different subjects have their own variations. Is 120 hours of Great Course videos enough for a credit? What level of out put would you require to go with it? For biology is the k12 biology book and doing a generic high school lab kit like this one enough for input? And for output would answering the questions at the end of the chapters and doing written lab write ups enough? Do I need to toss in books like the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks? if instead of the text book we did videos would it still be 120 hours of videos plus labs or is fewer hours of videos because the labs count towards the hours? What would an art class like drawing look like? I only took art in Middle school but I know she didn't talk the entire class period and some class periods it was just work on our projects. Everyone I know locally who is homeschooling high school is using Power Homeschool. Am I over thinking this, is Power Homeschool enough? His current post high school goal is to get a job to fund his love of playing video games. As his parents we would like him to get a job, or go to trade school or go to college. We aren't picky he just needs to do something. His grandparents and aunts and uncle want him to go to Ga Tech.
  2. We used English lessons through literature for many years but it lacked the writing support I needed to teach my kid so after loads for jumping around we are loving exploring the world through stories https://quidnampress.com/curriculum/exploring-the-world-through-story/ I don’t do grammar now till age ten now (fix it grammer) I still use our English lessons through literature books to read the poems and do the picture studies.

  11. We wont be starting this study till next summer but this is what i've figured out so far. I plan for us to visit Luray Caverns as that's close to us i have this neat Star Wars book from when the Smithsonian had an exhibit that talks about how original trilogy follows the Heroes journey. We have a neat book alas no pictures that is like a dictionary of imaginary creatures. As I was hunting for possible books to read aloud, i found one called "A Short History of the World According to Sheep" and absolutely loved it. I would like to find more books like it. I have three of the one small square books. Part of me is thinking about getting the rest of the books and doing a week on each book.

  18. Lori D. posted in What do your homeschool routines look like for middle schoolers? a list of things if you were going form home school 8th grade to public school 9th grade. - how to learn from a textbook - time management (schedule himself for getting work done; and track deadlines of big assignments) - stuff management (where are his papers, homework, assignments, and getting them handed in) - memorization tips and techniques (ex: learning For. Lang. vocabulary) - test-taking tips and techniques - beginning note-taking from a lecture I lack these skills, but I know that these are important things for my 6th graded to figure out over the next few years even if we don't send him to public school high school. How do I go about teaching these skills? Is there a book or workbook that we can work through?
  19. Kids are 12, 9, 6 and 3. I’m spent in the sense I’m not focused. I’m looking all around to get away but know I need to stay put. It might be the change in levels. Or sitting still for too long.
  20. I have four kids, three are school age. I have a chunk of time where I do their "at the elbow" work one at a time. I start with the youngest. Then I move to the eldest because he has things he needs to have gotten done before I get to him that relate to his lessons but also has things that stem off the lesson that he needs to do after. Then the middle one. Who has things to do before but not after. If I don't but breaks in between for myself I'm spent a third of the way through the middle one's lesson. If I put in a break between each kid, I lose momentum. I've been opting to forgo a break, but I don't think I can keep it up much longer. What are some breaks that I could try that hopefully would help keep up the momentum? Or are all breaks momentum killers?
