  1. I always seem to have a good idea of what I want to use each year (and the next) and when I go to a convention, I feel like I am back at square one. They are way too overwhelming. That being said, we have a huge one hosted each year in our city, and I like to go hear some of the speakers and check out new products. It definitely takes a couple weeks after a convention for my head to stop spinning, though. I don't know if I would pay hotel and travel costs each year. Maybe once?
  2. Cutting practice? Draw some lines and squiggles on a sheet of paper and have her cut along them. On the days she practices writing a certain letter, you could have her walk around the house and find objects that start with that letter. You could even practice numbers that way... find 5 objects that start with the letter a. You could give her a clipboard if you have one (that makes everyone feel old) and she could put a sticker on a sheet of paper every time she finds an object.
  3. Did you get it on some kind of special? And how exactly did you purchase the full set. We are new to all this! I would love to have the full set, as well!
  4. There is a lot of talk on this thread about charters. Could someone fill me in on them? I'm not familiar. I'm assuming it is some umbrella school for homeschooling? What would be the draw to such a program? Are you required in CA to homeschool under one? I'm in Texas, so we really don't have any homeshooling laws to follow, and the only charter schools around us are basically public schools you have to win a lottery to attend. They have nothing to do with homeschooling. I have always heard of them mentioned and would love to finally know why they are!
  5. I'm a lefty, almost 30, and I still tie things upside down. There are more important thugs to worry about, so I never put too much care into it. I was always at the top of my class, I just had a different way of doing things. I agree with perky bunch. I would only worry if it is setting her back in her academics.
  6. I came across the Child Training Bible last night and thought about this thread. http://www.childtrainingbible.com/ I love that it is not another book you have to buy, but an easy way to transform your own Bible. We do Bible studies, memorization, and Awanas at church, but I think this helps drive home how approachable the Bible is in everyday situations. Talk about a quick reference tool! From the creator's "about" page... "There are many moments throughout the day that I want to speak a word of truth to direct my children. I have tried biblical child training charts, verses on notecards plastered on the refrigerator and Bible memorization. In all my efforts it seemed that something was missing, something that I now realize is absolutely essential. I must give my children a physical experience with the Holy Word of God. They must see the Bible. Open the Bible. Become familiar with the text of the Bible. Whenever there is a problem, I want to train my children to immediately run to the Lord, seek His Words, and allow His truth to saturate the situation. Going to the Scripture chart on the fridge is…good. Using Scripture notecards in my pocket during the day is…good. Bible memorization is also very good. Opening the very Word of God is…the best!"
  7. We LOVE reading eggs over here!!! I am not even going to tell you how much money we have spent on it. I was being cheap in the beginning and only paid for one month after our free trial expired. It has been 6 months since then and I am STILL paying monthly. It automatically renews and I haven't had enough time (or interest) with a newborn to change around those settings. Someone come and shake some sense into me! I haven't worried too much about it, though, because my daughter is progressing by leaps and bounds! :iagree: I exposed my daughter to 100 EZ Lessons right after she turned 3. She has a longer attention span and loves "school" stuff, so I thought we would take a stab and shelve it if she wasn't ready. She ate it up. It has been 6 months since then and Reading Eggs has been the perfect supplement. Starfall was a flop for us. Being so young, she would click around and get into material that was too difficult. I like reading eggs because I set her up in the map section (versus the free play, which she likes, as well) and you can only progress one way -- step by step. It has really helped her reading fluency. She only sounds out about 25% of words she is reading now in books. Someone said on another thread that their son just clicked things until he got the right answer, so he didn't learn anything. I am usually around her when she does it, since she is the oldest, so if I see her losing interest and not caring we stop it for the day. Maybe that is why she is still loving it 6 months later? Obviously, it doesn't work for all children, though. I don't know how this works if you don't live in Jacksonville, but you can get a years subscription at Half-Off Depot for $37 right now. I'd assume it doesn't matter since it is online? http://halfoffdepot.com/jacksonville/one-year-subscription-to-reading-eggs-8903.html
  8. Thank you!!! I'm obviously new here (although I have been lurking quite a while) and haven't gotten the search feature down, yet. I tried searching other no luck!
  9. I'm bumping this. I can't believe with all the people viewing this forum nobody even read this post. My heart is is incredibly heavy for these parents!
  10. Hope this hasn't already been posted! Has anyone read this horrible story, yet? I figure the more people know, the better. It really got my blood boiling! http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/mother-who-questions-vax-at-hospital-has-newborn-taken-away/ (I'm on my iPad and can't tell if it linked, or not... or even how to link for that matter.) They need all the prayers they can get!!!
  11. Just the information I needed! I have been debating about us doing CC with my oldest next year who is 4. The only thing that was keeping me away from the idea is people saying that it isn't worth it for that age. I want to do it mainly for the social aspect, as we have lost many friends to school. We desperately need friends who are on the same page in life! I feel like anything she learns will just be icing on the cake and she will add to it in the future.
  12. Thank you!!! I have had a credit on there for over 4 years and have never found anything to use it on. This is perfect!!!
  13. I am trying to figure out what level to buy for my daughter (4, turning 5) to start in the fall. She already knows how to write all her letters, but they are all different heights and we haven't gone over correct line placement. This is what I am hoping to work on this upcoming year. She loves writing and often wants to write letters to family, with me telling her how to spell some words. She is also reading, if that information helps at all. I looked at the Kindergarten book for A Reason for Handwriting, and I don't want her to outgrow it too quickly and become bored. At the same time, I do not want the level A material to be too overwhelming for her. (Is the type too small?) It is only February, so I also know that she will be at a different place come the fall when we start everything. Any suggestions?
  14. We are new to homeschooling and I have been doing a lot of research the past year as to what curriculum I want to use. I have my picks ready to go and I am ready to start purchasing for next year. We are on somewhat of a tight budget and I am just wondering when the best time to buy curriculum is. All of the conventions in our area are during the summer and I really would like to have everything before that, so I can spend the summer planning out the upcoming year. Do you get some kind of discount for buying at conventions? If not, then what is the point of a convention besides the speakers? I would hate to buy everything the last weekend of July and only have a little prep time before the school year starts.
  15. My daughter already has her numbers 1-10 down and has done various number, same/different, and more/less worksheets. After looking at what each one covers, I was wondering if we could start with B, or do you think it is important that we start with Essentials A? I just don't want to spend half a year doing stuff that we already know because she has been complaining that her 1-10 counting activities are too easy.
  16. Thank you for the responses! They were exactly what I was hoping for and now I am just trying to pick. Question about Right Start... do I need to buy all the math items that go with it? I love the program, but I don't know if I can bring myself to spend almost $150 for a 3 year old. And I love the idea of bringing workbooks, etc, outside. Once it cools off, we will have to start doing everything outside!
  17. So I have read all over the place about waiting to school (whether formal or informal) your child until they get older. I get it, I really do. Stop and smell the roses. But what do you do when your child specifically asks to do school? My 3 and a half year old HATES outside. I mean, I sort of don't blame her since we live in Texas and it is still in the high 90s. She stands at the door begging to come inside if we are outside for more than 10 minutes. She has always loved coloring and doing anything educational. She obviously gravitates towards cleaner activities. This was me to a T when I was younger, so I understand where she is coming from. This year we have started informal schooling. I have outfitted this house with lots of manipulatives, puzzles, lacing toys, pattern toys, play dough, etc, etc, etc. She literally wakes up bouncing off the walls wanting to do "school." My plan was just a lot of repetition this whole year and we would start more formal stuff next year, but now she is complaining things are too easy. She breezes through every counting/number identification activity I present her. We have numbers 1-10 down and I don't know how to go on from here. We have a calendar that we count on every day and she can say all of the numbers by herself, but I want to really start teaching past 10 (not just counting but actually knowing what the larger numbers represent), plus other basic concepts. Does anyone have any recommendation for good teaching books for this? I guess more of a curriculum. How do you teach past 10? Like number families? And simple addition/subtraction... adding 1, adding 2, skip counting, etc.
