  1. I have family in Canada. I assure you not everyone there loves universal healthcare and many like their guns. Just like not everyone in America wants to join the NRA and see starving people without health care. I don't think everyone knows what all of the "Americans" or all of the "Canadians" are thinking. This thread goes back and forth with us vs them and I hate it.

  2. It is not a district that gets a "decent" rating. It is a district that gets OUTSTANDING ratings. The area is famous for having great schools.

    Bill

I happen to know that is true.

I am parital to Seattle, hence why we are here. HOwever my husband lived in Pleasanton for quite some time and if there was anywhere else on Earth I'd live it would be that area. It is beautiful, the culture is rich and diverse, and they have REAL Polish food. <end of rant> You can find some amazing food there too.

  3. LOL. Peace, guys. Peace. I understand the wildlife argument. I really do. And I agree with you that in those instances, a firearm would make sense.

Honestly, I'm not out to be argumentative. It's after midnight and I'm only awake because the Sudafed is making me jittery and dizzy. Just thought I'd pop into an active thread and talk a few ideas out.

I like your new status

We have bears. LOTS a bears

  4. But see, the homemade mayo, which wouldn't have all the additives that storebought mayo has, trumps the mystery meat.

Yeah and I added a spoon full of whey and let it sit on the counter for several hours on PURPOSE!

  5. You ARE reading it wrong. There is no american bashing, we are discussing what makes the 2 countries so different in this regard when otherwise they are very much teh same and has included other countries too. We have discussed the mental health differences, gun control, the constition, forms of gov't, immigration, and Calgarians. I have not seen any bashing at all. Now of course it was pointed out in one response that some american members will be upset by anything posted negatively about their country, but that is not bashing. That is fact. The vast majority of americans even when very patriotic admit there is broken parts of the system that need to be fixed. If you do not discuss them then how do you flesh out a plan to fix them? There is merit in looking at how other countries do things, particularily when they share a border and in many many ways are the same.

No I meant one post not the entire point of the thread

  6.

I'm pretty sure that was OK, because there were still some turkey parts in there somewhere.

I think it's the raw egg and I heard about some weird bacteria thing or something you can get from lunch meat type things. I never had a book though. Boy am I glad. Those books make for SOME kind of nervous wreck of a new mom

  7. I posted in the security thread about what the schools here do. Do I think those things are uniquely Canadian? nope, but despite the fact that the last school shooting(not college shooting) was 13 years ago, every grade in all the schools in at least the 3 districts we have lived in/dealt with have done lock down drills every 8 weeks or so. They have plans in place and follow them in the drill as if a gunman came in with the singular goal of stopping him/her as quickly as possible and protect the kids. In my tiny town of 750 where no one does anything without anyone else knowing it they even run these drills just in case.

I have never claimed it could not happen in other places, no one in this thread has. We have all said though that limited access to guns reduces the risk of that happening.

I wonder if they do that here?

I have been out of the public school system since *I* was in school so I don't know. It surely would make sense. Hell they have earthquake drills and we have never had one here in recent history

  8. When I was pregnant with my second child, I wanted to make sure I ate enough protein. Not being a big meat-eater, I ate a CAN of TUNA for lunch *every* day! How is he not brain-damaged from mercury exposure?

    ;)

I ate lunch meat turkey almost every day. WIth homemade mayo.

  9. So what would the typical elementary staff DO, that is so uniquely Canadian, that would save more children if a crazed gunman walked in? It may be harder to get a gun, but one determined person could make it happen. It 'could' happen anywhere.

I don't know why people think it's OK to say Americans are desensitized to gun violence? Do you KNOW anyone who is OK with it? Who wouldn't be as shocked as possible if something like this happened in their neighborhood? We are not less horrified by the current events because we're Americans. We're more horrified because it happened here.

It's a problem because even one school shooting is too many. Statistically, though, is this really a 'trend' or are we all just very upset right now?

    I feel the same way
