  1. I have heard a lot of people LOVE FIAR. I have Vol. 2 and honestly I can't seem to get my mind around the layout. It may just be me!:glare: I also would like to add in more reading then just the one book and would kind of like that done for me instead of having to pick myself - I know I am sounding lazy now....
  2. I looked at this but I don't think it is quite what I am looking for. I also saw the WP Animals and Their Worlds but it is a little on the pricey side for adding to our core. Thanks for the suggestions!!:)
  3. I am considering using the hands-on math, would I need the student sheets for that? Could you maybe ellaborate on what the student sheets really are? Their website is hard to get a feel for it. They show some sheets for the "Insect" unit, is this what each unit has for the student sheets?
  4. So I am looking for something more unit study type science/bible/history for my 4 & 5 year olds. (and tag along 2 year old) I have looked at and tried some of the integrated K programs - HOD LHFHG, MFW K, SL. I am looking for something that does not integrate the phonics and math - I think.:tongue_smilie: I have been reading them books for a few years so I really wanted something for our "school" time to include crafts/activities. I am finding that if it isn't written down for me to do it is not getting done. So could I just add books to our core subjects, no I would like more. I am sure I could write my own thing but.... with 2 year old and 10 month old as well I am finding my time is not really available for my grand plans of writing my own.:001_smile: We LOVE books, so there has to be some reading and I would like it to be doable for the 2 year old and 10 month old in future years while I still have olders to teach - so not too time consuming. So any suggestions??? If you used an integrated program (even if from above list) how did you tweak it for what I am wanting to use it for? Did you think it was worth the $ if you didn't use the phonics/math portions? Any ideas of seperate unit type studies? TIA!:)
  5. Now I am still just starting to teach my kids to read so only take what I say with a grain of salt..... Does it really matter if she can mark her vowels? I was under the impression that it is to help reinforce reading skills. If she is reading and not having problems maybe don't worry about it. The only other thing I can think of that it may benefit is spelling but again does she have a problem with that? If spelling is an issue maybe you can work on that in a different way. (don't ask me what different way I am talking about - I have no idea:lol:)
  6. Thank you for the example of using AAS and for the link to your blog!
  7. Thank you sixpence! That really helps. I am going to look into those resources. Even if I buy the PP Boosters it is much less expensive then another phonics curriculum.:001_smile:
  8. This week my kids 2 1/2, 4, 5 1/2, finally got to use the do-a-dot markers that I purchased awhile back. You can see them here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00004W3Y4/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=momwitapr-20&linkCode=am2&camp=217145&creative=399369&creativeASIN=B00004W3Y4 I gave them print outs of alphabet letters that are hollow to color or do a craft with. I printed mine for www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com I don't know that they are washable but let me tell you they all did over half of the alphabet pages and only stopped because I said they needed to. We finished the other half the next day and made alphabet books with some yarn. They all like taking turns writing on the marker board. Those markers are NOT washable - ask me how I know:001_huh:! We also have small marker boards from the $1 section at Target but for some reason the large on the wall kind has more of a draw. I know these are motor skill activities and you said he doesn't like to have worksheets but this may be a little different way of using his motor skills. I second the idea of special "school" activities/puzzles. I myself need to put together a tub of activities for the 2 1/2 year old..... which reminds me I just found this http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Toddler-Learning-Activities.pdf Some of the activities may be too young and others would need you to be involved but there are quite a few that you could just have him do. This is one basket I plan to get together. Hope some of these ideas are helpful! They have been for me - now just to go get these things together!:tongue_smilie:
  9. Thank you for posting this! Definitely things I needed to hear!!!
  10. Ok, so now that AAR Level 1 is coming out I really want to get it. The problem is that I am worried the newer levels will not match up with my kids progress. My kids (k & 4K) at this point are reading CVC words by sounding them out. It seemed like the program has been pushed back a few months as it is and now they are thinking it should be released in Nov. We have been using Phonics Pathways, kind of.;) I was going to just pick up in PP where we need to and go from there. I did really like the looks of the AAR Pre-1 but we were past what they were teaching. The "fun" factor is what is pulling me. Then I also have considered using AAS for phonics/reading instruction instead of or with PP. As I said in the subject line.....please HELP! So I guess my questions are for those you use Phonics Pathways - why you like it? - how you make it "fun"? Those of you using AAS for phonics/reading instruction - how do you like it? - do you find it too slow for teaching how to read?
  11. :iagree: I am still on the hunt for "the" curriculum for my family and I am just starting with K - yikes - so many years ahead to find the right things. I have decided maybe some of the curriculum I have seen is perfect and hmmmm that might mean that if I want to tweak everything could it be..... that I am not perfect - oh no!:tongue_smilie: PS I am a HOD drop out, re-try, drop out, re-try and now moving on again - my poor husband!
  12. I would second maybe looking at Simply Charlotte Mason. Here is the curriculum guide: http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/ You can easily use what you like from there and leave the rest. It might give you some of the structure or overall plan that the all in one curriculums have but you are still able to tweak it to fit your family and children! I would agree with the others if you liked MOH go with it! Maybe you can add in living books for your 1st grader that are on topic of what you are reading.
  13. Does anyone have experience with this? Did you supplement with anything (workbooks/games)? When you finish do you just go into reading practice or where do you go after? TIA!:)
  14. Thank you for the Abeka tips! Not to make myself even more confused but has anyone used Word Mastery found online or can you direct me to reviews of people who have used it?
  15. Georgiana - What all did you use from Abeka? They have soooo many bells and whistles! I have the Handbook for Reading and TM for the Handbook for Reading. When I looked at ther Letters & Sounds K5 it seemed like my kids were almost past it. They can read CVC words with the short vowel sounds. I really want to keep moving forward with them. Would I just need the L&S 1 or would I need the lesson plans and flashcards?
  16. Why did you switch to BJU? I am open to other programs. FYI - My children can read words using the short vowel sounds. We haven't worked with the long vowel sounds or many sight words.
  17. Has anyone used both and can tell me which you preferred? Which program did your kids excell/enjoy the most?
  18. Hi, I am trying to decide between Phonics Pathways and Abeka Phonics. Looking through the Handbook for Reading and PP the difference seems to be that PP groups all spellings with the one sound and Abeka seems to give you the one spelling with two to three sounds. Anyone who understands what I just wrote :tongue_smilie:please tell me which you have found to be better for your kids. It makes sense in Abeka that you would see the same spelling but then you have to think about which sound would make the word you are reading correct.... but.... then Phonics Pathways makes sense that you would practice the same sound to cement the sound but do the spellings get confusing when you may have the same spelling but a different sound :glare:. You can see I am really at a loss here!:001_smile: Any help/opinions greatly appreciated!!!
  19. I have the old version of the R&S grade 1 math but haven't used much of it yet. I am curious if the new revised workbooks are worth looking into getting. If you have seen the new edition how do you think it compares to the old edition? Is it very different? I am hoping there is a bit more covered on money, time, and other topics throughout. It seems like looking at the older version that unless you use the copymasters you do not see many topics covered except the add/sub facts. Any info would be great!
  20. I am pretty new too, so no advice. I would love the booklist mentioned above though!:)
  21. Thank you! This is exactly what I was thinking about doing but wondered if I will mess things up if I don't do the HOD guides from the beginning. I'm still not sure which direction I am going to go...... decisions, decisions!
  22. Anyone??? If you would rather PM me that would be fine too. I have been reading the 27 Reasons Not to Buy HOD and see why some of you may not be posting. I promise I will not be judging just want honest opinions good or bad about TQ or HOD.
