Just a quick update before I head back in.When we go here we were surprised to find him in the isolation section of the icu. We have to gown, glove, and mask. He has a 104 degree fever that will go down for a hour or so and then back up to 104/105. His white blood cells are so low they can't give ibuprofen and he maxxed out on tylonol yesterday. We've been packing him with ice. He is hallucinating (which later will be hilarious) um let's see. Liver enzymes high also. Tge tests for typhoid and malaria take days to come back- like until wednesday. So they have iv fluids going and a antibiotic. No water because his salt level is low.
This is my very healthy crunchy western son. He is furious that a medical dr would tell him to drink gatorade when that is all chemicals sugar ajd artificials. He is vegan and cooks all his own foods. I went to whole foods last night and got him some fruit, hummus, and kumbocha. The docs don't want him drinking the kumbocha because they dont want to introduce more bacteria (even good ones) to his gut.
They did want him to eat and drink so we are working on finding some foods that work.
My DH took the overnight so I could get a nap. I'm headed back into the hospital now.
Oh yeah and some background. He was in India from May until June before he headed back out to his park service job here in utah. He didn't get malaria shots this time, but had them 10 years ago when he was 13. So they are thinking he had partial immunity and that's why it so long to present- if it is malaria.
