  1. Just a quick update before I head back in.When we go here we were surprised to find him in the isolation section of the icu. We have to gown, glove, and mask. He has a 104 degree fever that will go down for a hour or so and then back up to 104/105. His white blood cells are so low they can't give ibuprofen and he maxxed out on tylonol yesterday. We've been packing him with ice. He is hallucinating (which later will be hilarious) um let's see. Liver enzymes high also. Tge tests for typhoid and malaria take days to come back- like until wednesday. So they have iv fluids going and a antibiotic. No water because his salt level is low. This is my very healthy crunchy western son. He is furious that a medical dr would tell him to drink gatorade when that is all chemicals sugar ajd artificials. He is vegan and cooks all his own foods. I went to whole foods last night and got him some fruit, hummus, and kumbocha. The docs don't want him drinking the kumbocha because they dont want to introduce more bacteria (even good ones) to his gut. They did want him to eat and drink so we are working on finding some foods that work. My DH took the overnight so I could get a nap. I'm headed back into the hospital now. Oh yeah and some background. He was in India from May until June before he headed back out to his park service job here in utah. He didn't get malaria shots this time, but had them 10 years ago when he was 13. So they are thinking he had partial immunity and that's why it so long to present- if it is malaria.
  2. Not on the plane yet. Hoping for the 1245. I talked to the doc in the icu. She is thinking typhoid fever maybe.
  3. There's been no change overnight. it's bacterial- they think. His heart rate and fever are still up. I'm on stand by for the 945 flight this morning. If I don't get that one I have a good shot at the noon flight. I did get to talk to him in icu. He was trying to joke about fungus so that's a good sign.
  4. I just got a call that my oldest son has been taken to the hospital in Salt Lake City. He has a high fever, is dehydrated, incoherent speech etc. He has been up in the mountains for over a month at about 9000 ft. They are testing now for meningitis. I'm flying out first thing in the morning. So yeah- stress and worry are what I'm feeling right now.
  5. We bought books on vacation. Then bought a extra bag to bring them home in.
  6. The perfect Sunday morning thread. I think I'm about to run out of "likes"

  8. Ugh. Been there. I suggest chocolate in vast quantities.
  9. super cute! What do you call your bangs? Did you show a picture? I don't speak hairdresser and always have a language barrier and then walk out looking weird.
  10. Saw this at Target: Super Studier? Sorry the pic is big can't seem to shrink it this morning.
  11. Sidetrack- What are those belly wrap things? I've seen them on my instagram feed. There is no way just squeezing the pooch in makes it go away.
  12. 1. There are some pages in front that give you a overview of how to teach each subject. Spelling tests in the back, the younger grades have the enrichment pages. 2. No- we do it orally so I stopped buying the student book entirely. 3.not yet.
  13. Yes, yes, yes. I am just glad it was only a 90 minute trip for me. It was just a stupid time waster. I can't stand going to meetings where they read you their hand out. This was a whole day of that.
  14. That's what I used as well. It did get rid of the nausea for me. I could be human again. I also was in the hospital for 24 hours on iv hydration before starting the combo, so that may have helped as well.
  15. In the past I was way to busy to worry about what I looked like. Its a luxury- really. Also living out in the sticks I wouldn't see anyone besides family except at the store or Church. So I wore tshirts, shorts, jeans, sweats. Since last Fall I've been trying to dress better. I still dress down at home cause its what I'm used too. I have bought new clothes and look fairly good I think- except now that I have the time to dress better I don't like how I look. I wish I hadn't wasted all those skinny me years hiding nothing behind long sweatshirts. Now I have a big belly flap that is never going away. Sigh.
  16. We moved from a 3000 square foot house with a 75 minute commute to a 2400 sqft house with a 40 minute commute to 1300 square ft and a 5 minute walk. The difference is amazing. We have so much time now. I would never ask to move away and even if I did the answer would be no.
  17. Funniest thing ever- the train conducter refusing to give my 8yo the student fare without a student id. Clearly he could be a 3rd grade drop out....

    1. Belacqua

      Belacqua

Or a prodigy. He could be a hedge fund manager trying to scam the student rate. Can't be too careful.

The funny thing is my DD has a "school ID" (because a company gave them away free for homeschoolers last fall, and I sent for one, figuring she'd enjoy having it), but I don't have a "Faculty ID"-because I'd have to pay for mine!

  18. It was like the school knew that parents would want to butt in to registration so they "entertained" us to keep us away from the students. They should have just said drop your kid off- come back at 3pm. Here is a lunch voucher and a map of the town. I would have been thrilled.
  19. Legal disclaimer, this is just my opinion: I can say that the merger has been horrible. The head of the airline completely botched it and should step down. The employees aren't happy, passengers aren't happy. It's just a mess. They merged because there was virtually no overlap between routes which was great- now we fly everywhere. But the merge of the two airlines has been rough. Two very different business plans and corporate cultures. They tried to cut it down the middle making everything on paper look fair. Instead of taking the actual best part of each airline and using their strengths to come together.
  20. It's the merger. United and Continental still haven't got all the bugs worked out.
  21. Well, that is a good point. I would agree that by 21 most kids are ready at least more than are at 18.
  22. I attended parent orientation yesterday while my son registered for his classes. The parents were told , " The kids don't like to read the emails sent from the university- try to get their passwords so they don't miss important deadlines" Sending the students off to register they were told to meet back in the basement to receive their student ids- Person with microphone- Don't forget to return to the basement. Where are you going after this? The basement. Where will you meet your parents? The basement Really? How will these kids survive on their own? I really wish I had ditched the group- I could have read all afternoon on a bench.
  23. I am now. A few years ago we gutted the house all 8 of us lived in. Before that I had 5 young kids, and sick old people to take care of. During those seasons it was never up to my standards. I looked bad, the house was only surface clean with lots of clutter. I am happy to be in the now stage. I wanted to add that I never judge other people in that way. There were years when I was happy if everyone had clean clothes on.
  24. My 8yo has croup- again.

The Dr. said he's the oldest kid he's ever seen with it. Weird.

Maybe you will be at the end soon. My DS1 had it annually or more until about 8. My other two kids get it too, although a bit less frequently. It stinks when a regular cold turns into a pretty horrible event most times :/ Hope he feels better and you get some rest. Croup=sleepless nights for parents!

I hate croup. Bless his heart. Middle-of- the-night, sudden-onset-croup once scared us so bad we called EMS. (We had never seen croup before) That stridor & gasping is TERRIFYING. :( Hope he's on the mend already.

  25. We were all around there. Darn it. We walked over there and couldn't believe how cool it all was. Plus- we walked there. Lovin this city thing.
