  1. Thanks all. We are finishing up SSL and he really loves it so I think that is why he really wants to do SSG. Maybe I will get code cracker and work on that for a while. Maybe SSL2 will be out by then :).
  2. dmmelter "Having said that, DD and I both liked Greek Code Cracker better." What did you like better about it?
  3. So I'm caving in and letting the little guy do SSG. Basically because he is so insistent on it and we are moving toward the Greeks in SOTW. I don't have a lot if money to spend so I was going to skip the teachers guide. Can the program be done with just the student book? If the teachers guide is an absolute this will out this program. I would get Alphabet Code Cracker instead. Thanks
  4. She is about 3 mths maybe??? She came from my uncles flock. She is living in my spare room in a dog crate. Unfortunately we live in the NE so she will be inside with us for a while. my father is making us a cage for her. She's definitly a pet chicken now. I just feel bad about her leg. It is a nice lesson for my son about not being perfect. Thanks all
  5. I have a chick who was being picked on by the others. He must have suffered a broken leg from being trampled. The leg basically sticks straight out backward from the hip. I tried bracing the two legs together for 2 wks. It did improve the leg a little but not much. She was getting around fine but since the brace is off and she is getting big she is having a really hard time balancing. Not sure what I should do any ideas? I keep praying she will adjust to her disability but I'm not sure. She eats, drinks and eliminates without problem. Thanks
  6. My son was very slow at that age. His grip was unbelievable tight and he pressed so hard on the pencil he had to sharpen it after every word(ugh). Add in perfectionism and... I tried everything to help him and all that happened was he got more frustrated and "hated writing" more. I finally just resolved to try to let him work it out and mature. The improvements he had made are amazing. He is in third grade now and by no means does he whip his writing out but he is much improved and the death grip has gone away. I think it took time and patience. A lot of patience :) I agree practice is what he needs and he is getting that with what your doing. IMO he doesn't need more right now. He's working really hard. Good luck I sympathize with you 100%. It will get better.
  7. We love FLL and WWE. Retention is great with FLL and my writing phobic son has thrived with WWE. I would highly recommend both programs. We tried WWW and my son hates it. We haven't used enough of the program to say how the results would be.
  8. Would it be beneficial to get the teachers manual? I've just been using the student workbook. Thanks
  9. Thanks gardenmama I will keep that in mind. I wonder if my guy would be too nervous? I'll have to ask him. I'm going to stick with spelling workout. My guy doesn't mind it and it seems like the benefits will out weigh the boring.
  10. Thanks all. I think what I need to do is accelerate and find his learning level. Maybe move up a book or two. I am also going to start keeping a record of words he misspells in writing and use them as bonus word. I'm still very new and he tends to be a very high/fast learner which can be intimidating at times. Thanks for all the help I get on the board.
  11. We do spelling workout D. I feel like it is a lot of busy work and not a lot of benefit. Maybe because my son can spell most of the words before the lesson begins. His spelling is excellent in other subjects also. I'm not sure if I should just ditch spelling all together and let him grow on his own through his reading, forge on, change levels. When I initially decided to use a spelling program it was because I wanted the rules for him but he really doesn't pay any attention to the rules when we talk about them. He is very strong in reading and LA in general. Anyone know of a program that may be a better fit and is economical? Would going without a program work out?
  12. Check studyjams too. They are great science videos. There is one on heredity that might be good. I haven't watched that one yet. My 8 year old loves them.
  13. I really dont think you need a program for this. You want them to enjoy art. Each week I have my son pick an artist. We get books from the library and I locate Internet resources. He spend about an hour working on that artist. I have him narrate what he has learned. Sometimes he gets inspired to recreate one of the pieces sometimes he doesn't. When we can we visit the art museum and focus on one artist. I always bring pencils/crayons/paper. Have fun with it, art is ment to be enjoyed.
  14. Thanks for the games I didn't know about those!
  15. My guy liked the great illustrated classics series. Dr. Dolittle, Treasure Island and Peter Pan were some of his favorites. The reading level is below 6(not really sure of levels) but it has helped my son understand the stories now that he is reading the original versions.
  16. after we finish SSL. I think it will be gentle for my little guy and it's price is very manageable. I think I will get SSL2 when it comes out because DS really enjoyed SSL. Any pointers on using this would be appreciated. I am also going to give Writing Tales a try when we finish up FLL3 and WWE4. Anyone use this?
  17. Thanks Laura. He was trying to say character. He loves to show off his big words.
  18. WWE 3 week 12 narration From The Moffats by Eleanor Estes written exactly as he wrote it Both Jane and Joey wanted Boots. But, just as Boots looked like she was going to Joey, she hopped into Jane's lap! Jane rejoiced. Joey got Mask. Joey found out that Mask had some personalities, too! Edited because he remembered to capitalize Boots, I did not. This is our first year with WWE. He is a reluctant writer although much improved since August. He "loves" WWE. Any thoughts/ideas/opinions appreciated. Thanks
  19. The number on the book doesn't matter. Your making sure her skills are solid. She will be better in the long run. Keep plugging along at the pace that enables her to grasp the concepts.
  20. What about having him copy jokes or funny phrases. While not educational it would help improve his stamina, hopefully without as much complaining.
  21. I saw some free printouts on abcteach.com
  22. Reviving this old post. Wondering if OP did this and how it worked out. My son really wants to do SSG after he finishes SSL(guess the advertisement at the end of the book works). I would like to still continue with Latin(curric TBD) but would be open to SSG if it runs as smoothly as SSL.
  23. Try to relax and Look back at all you've already taught her. Give yourself credit, she wouldn't be where she is now without you. I'm still very new to HS and it can feel overwhelming, esp picking out curriculum. Your daughter is young. Until you find what works, read to her and enjoy your time together. No teacher will love her like you do, that's the best gift you can give her.
  24. Prima Latina looks like it might work out too. I'll have to look into it more.
  25. My son would love SSL2. I'll hope for January! My library had a minimus kit available so I'm going to check it out. The more I look at LFC the more I think it will be too much right now. Maybe next year. There is plenty of time he's eight:001_smile:
