he is 4th grade.....what can I do with him daily to keep encouraging that? He wants to calculate EVERYTHING in his head but doesn't necessarily get it correct when he does (division with remainders as an example) I have to force him to "figure it out" on paper for math but I don't want to discourage the "mental" calculations he loves to do. Ds has been doing Saxon 87 this year and really doesn't like it. He is a slow worker and It takes him FOREVER to do the lessons and honestly I think he is burned out. We have tried switching things up by splitting up the lessons.... doing half mixed practice. I think it is simply time to give up on Saxon for him... what alternatives do I have for him? TT is an option but I have heard some negative things about it.... too easy...not enough practice. I honestly don't wanna spend that much $$ on math to have to spend more $$ to supplement. DS is not a lover of math, however I do think he grasps it fairly well.... Debbie

If so, how is it? I have heard there have been some issues...and a lot of people do not like it. We have an old Mac we would like to replace with a Mini mac but I hesitate because of the issues with Lion. Our old Mac is a bit stubborn at times but still functions..... don't really wanna trade my aggravation with it for a new aggravation...kwim?

hmmmm..... when I signed up a couple months back I didn't have to use either FB or Twitter...... still to this day it gives me that option but I also have a regular email sign in option.. -
we need to replace our old desktop mac but don't necessarily want to spend a ton of $$$.... it's has bare minimum memory and now won't even run our software for our camera. our desktop is the only computer I print from.... it's where I download stuff for school...... my laptop is a PC so I mainly use it for surfing the web and such. I can't even print from it..... it's a cheapo we bought last year and I am already having battery issues with it so I don't want to rely on it much at all. I consider our desktop our main homeschool hub...kids don't play games or anything on it...... mainly used by me. Oh we also use if for downloading family pictures from the digital camera.... we have an external drive hooked to it now for storage. Thinking a basic mac mini will work for us for now until we can get our debt gone and spend a bit more $$ on a macbook or imac. thoughts??

Saxon math...not enough lesson practice!! Remedy??
blessedx5 replied to blessedx5's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
thank you... -
DS is in Saxon 87.... however there simply isn't enough lesson practice each lesson for him to grasp it well..... do I find something else that is maybe mastery approached? Is there another curriculum that might suit him better? I really don't want to stop mid year like this.... so here is what I did..... I went through several lessons ahead of the current lesson he is on. I pulled out (from the mixed practices)all the problems pertaining to the current lesson. He will do those in addition to what the lesson assigns and then do the mixed practice as usual. Each day this week I am having him do this. I think most lessons came out with about 5 extra problems. We will see how this goes..... but if anyone has any suggestions on other math programs to look at I would appreciate it. Debbie

I am in need of some inexpensive bookshelves/cases and was looking at Walmart/Target..... they would house some of our books but the reviews are iffy at both places. Anybody have any of these and would like to comment? We have a couple from Walmart that we have had books on for years..... but not sure if they are made as well now as they were??

Are there really that many more GREAT apps that run on Ipad that wouldn't be great on the Ipod touch? Granted I know there is a big size difference but not sure I wanna spend that $$$ on an Ipad for access to apps. Surfing web, reading I have Laptop, desktop and nook color apps, music we have Ipod touch wondering if I really need an Ipad.....

My mom bought him an acoustic guitar for Christmas... it came with a DVD to teach the very basics....chords and such but that is about it. Not sure where to go from here????? Lessons will run us about $50/mth for 30 minute lessons weekly..... doesn't seem like much time per week for lessons though .. We also question if it is tuned right???? he has tried to based on that DVD and some stuff on youtube but it still sounds "off" Any suggestions??? Should we get a tuner from the music store? Any particular book to get him going? Any help is appreciated.. Debbie

how do I know which ones? We don't have smart phones and probably won't be getting one anytime soon.... however I would love to use maybe some planning/grocery apps on my ipod touch and be able to access this while out and about..... is this possible with ANY of those type apps without wifi?

Ipad1 vs Ipad2.... major differences? I notice IPad2 has IOS 5 but didn't see that with Ipad1..... is this something super duper great the Ipad2 has that 1 doesn't? If I went with Ipad1 would most of the newer apps coming out work on it??? Storage??? I notice some apps are quite large which means a lot of large apps will eat up the storage capacity or are there other options?? Storing in the cloud??? What exactly is the CLOUD??? Store in Itunes but move to Ipad to use?? Would love some educating....:001_smile:
