  1. I have to agree with you. I want to make sure that he can take care of himself when he is grown up, and that he has the knowledge and skills to do so. Right now, I'm going to focus on his reading and reinforce his math skills. I am so grateful for the HIVE.
  2. I'm going to read that book. I want something I can understand, as well as implement. This is my first time teaching someone to read, so I'm nervous.
  3. That sounds like it might work for us. :) I'm going to read more on that. He loved books before k12, so this is a way to get him back into it.
  4. Thank you for sharing your friend's experiences. I know I will probably place him back in PS eventually, but I feel I must repair the damage this curriculum did. I want to make sure he is doing well at reading, writing and math, as well as thinking critically, before I place him back in PS.
  5. Everything is so far away from everything here. We ride the bus to go anywhere. But, I know we have a resale shop that gets a lot of used home school materials, so I will check that out. I think it will be trial and error here too. I got tired of meandering through their stuff, at k12, and then having to turn to other curriculum in order for him to get it.
  6. Hi everyone! I posted here back in August, I believe, because my son was starting kindergarten at k12, and I needed some guidance. I finally said enough, and I'm withdrawing him this week. Does anyone have information on homeschooling the special needs child? He was never tested at his school (I pursued it), but has documented speech problems and suspected learning issues. I'm excited but scared to start homeschooling him. I feel I can create a better curriculum that engages him better. We were forced to skip ahead in phonics and he still can't recognize his abcs and his teacher expects him to know how to read and write at this point. The last straw was when I saw the lesson plan on teaching math stories, and realized I had already used that method and my son had mastered that technique. I felt at that point, that I could teach my son, and stop destroying his love of learning. He hates reading now, and he associates school with boredom, disappointment and hates it. Also, could someone recommend a good low cost or free curriculum for his age group. I know he did not benefit from sitting and listening to lessons. He learns by doing.
  7. Hmm maybe I need to get a blog when I get more time?:001_huh:
  8. DS #1 wrote letters this week on his own and correctly! He also sounded out two words from a site we use for phonics. He's doing really great at math, and picked up on AB and ABB patterns really well. He also gets a kick out of Reading EGGS. DS#2 started abcjesusloves me which we do a couple times a week. He seems to like it.
  9. I'm starting DS #2 off on this tomorrow. I really think he could benefit from learning something designed for him, not just DS #1 k12 stuff. Is anyone else using this? How did you like it?
  10. Hi everyone! I just found a new resource while looking around Google. I typed free phonics curriculum, and saw a lot of people recommend Progressive Phonics. Anyone here have experience with that system?
  11. I was hoping I could get some suggestions on teaching the objectives I find on k12. Especially for phonics and math. My son is in kindergarten, and he's struggling bad with phonics. His school says he has to attend class connect daily, which he does, in order to get better. :S I have mother goose phonics, kumon phonics and we go to a game site that does phonics. We also utilize star-fall. For math we use kumon, jump-start and some scholastic books I have that use games and movements to teach concepts. Its just none of these things really show a way to start where you are and go from there. Is there anything out there where we can jump in at the sounds he has to learn this week? Or should we start at the top then work our way back? He's still learning the alphabet, just like on math he's learning his numbers...Funny how they expect him to be at the same level as everyone else even though we just started and he's special needs. And I love how they assume one lesson is enough to get it. Spend more time on it, you fall behind. With our own curriculum, we'd spend as much time as we needed on it! Maybe I should find a good reading curriculum. And any ideas how to make handwriting without tears work for us? I used the preious suggestions on here and now we're getting more done by doing less. I hate the curriculum but I make it work. Using objectives works for social studies, history and language arts. My son is a visual and kinetic learner so I'm trying to work with that. I'm just trying to figure out how to make this work for me. DS is falling behind and I don't want him to have to play catchup next year. Also any ideas on teaching calendars btw? They made that part of kmath. I love this site! Even when not posting, I love to pop up on here and learn new things. I've learned a lot from the people here. Thanks!
  12. My other ds watches and when it makes sense, I copy off extra worksheets for him. I've been exploring and have long since desired a pre-k program for him. My ds is 3 going on 4, so I hope its ok to post a reply to this.
  13. Yeah, but that was crazy. I'm liking the idea of independent homeschooling next year more and more. I'm accessing all the free resources I can find, as well as evaluating paid ones. I plan to stick it out this year, supplement as much as I can, and go full independent next year, or find a great local school.
  14. I ended up getting these: Terrific Transitions . . Toss & Learn Games: Math. . Move & Learn Math Activities. . Irresistible 1,2,3s. . Circle-Time Poetry: Math. . Kindergarten Assessment Handbook. . Learn-the-Alphabet Arts & Crafts. . 20 Reading and Writing Centers. . Mother Goose Phonics. . Fresh & Fun: Halloween. The selection wasn't bad. They were free and I downloaded them immediately.
  15. I found this on a site someone on here linked to: http://www.freelyeducate.com/2011/09/10-in-free-ebooks-from-scholastic-teacher-express.html Hope it helps.
