  1. Thanks everyone. Hunter, this is why LLATL appeals to me; because I think it will get done consistently. However, I also don't want to settle for less because I'm tired and don't want to spend two hours on English everyday.
  2. Thanks, Sweetpea3829. We tried EIW for 9th grade and it didn't go over well. I'll check out the lower levels. I do like that it includes grammar. Do you think that LLATL is disorganized and dated in the upper levels as well? I'm wondering if most people who don't care for it try the lower levels and then move on to something else. I'm finding very few reviews of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade books.
  3. Thank you. This looks interesting. Do you know where I can find samples to look through?
  4. Thank you, both. That does help. I just really want something all in one. I guess I 'll keep looking. We did use Writing Tales 1 and 2 a while back and enjoyed it. Something like that would be perfect, but I need it for 7th and 8th.
  5. This is for my dd12 in 7th grade. She is a good writer, but she doesn't enjoy writing for school. She has a nice "voice" but needs help with structure, and occasionally grammar/punctuation. We have tried so many things and nothing seems to fit what I'm looking for. Currently she's using IEW for writing and R&S for grammar and dictation for spelling. IEW was a great fit for my older boys, but it doesn't seem like a great fit for her. She tends to add interesting vocabulary and varied openers on her own. She usually balks at the IEW checklist, which was such a great help to my boys. I'm the one who doesn't care for R&S. I've tried it so many times with my kids and I always swear I will finish a book, but it hasn't happened yet. Part of the problem is having three different books for LA. I have two toddlers and two high schoolers at home too, so my one on one time is limited, and trying to use all three books daily becomes difficult. Mostly I would like to find something quick and easy to implement so it gets done. She does seem to be more of a natural writer, at least it comes more easily to her than it did to my boys. I have lots on my shelf ( WWS, WWTB, LL, Jump In, WS, W&R, EG, GWG......) but am not sure any of them are a good fit for her. English seems to be an area where I have a really hard time choosing and sticking to a program. Thanks for any suggestions!
  6. Is it because it's light? Any other reasons? It sounds so tempting to have all LA components covered in one book, but I keep reading all these awful reviews of it.
  7. I'm not quite sure how to title this post.😊 My 10th grader is taking an online LTOW class. It seems like they work on an essay over a three week period. He's also using Notgrass world history which has a weekly writing project. Is it expecting too much of him to do the weekly Notgrass writing assignments as well as the LTOW assignments? I'm trying to challenge him but not overwhelm him with too much written output. He's having a hard time completing all his work well this year, so I need to figure out where I can cut back a little. Thanks for any thoughts.
  8. I'm trying to decide between R&S English 6 and IEW US History lessons with Easy Grammar Plus. Which would you choose for a 7th grade natural but reluctant writer? Or should I consider something else altogether?
  9. Thank you. You all have been very helpful. Does anyone know if an anatomy coloring book is needed? Also, are the labs, specifically the dissections, an integral part of the course? Would watching dissections on video be sufficient?
  10. Is there any reason why this wouldn't be a good idea? The progression would look like this: 9th IPC 10th Biology 11th Advanced Biology 12th Chemistry Thanks!
  11. I am considering this for a 10th and an 11th grader next year, but would love to hear some reviews before I pay for it. Thanks!
  12. My 6th grade dd has enjoyed Writing Tales 1 and 2. What would be a good program to use next year for 7th? I have tried IEW with her and she doesn't particularly care for it. She also tried a couple lessons in W&R Narrative 2, and that was just ok. Any suggestions?
  13. I had pretty much decided on using IEW continuation course C for my 9th and 10th graders this year, but then I found the workbook for LAoW that someone on this board wrote, and now I'm second guessing. Which program does a better job of solidifying essay skills? I haven't seen very many reviews of LAoW. If you have used LAoW, can you tell me what you liked or didn't like? Is LAoW considered enough for the writing component of an English credit? Any suggestions for other writing programs are welcome.😊 We have done IEW for several years because I haven't found anything else that we like better. So I'm wondering if it would be good to try something different, or stick with what's familiar.
  14. Thanks so much, freesia.😊 I think I'll stick with SICC since I need to simplify this year.
  15. Which of these would be better for a student that has completed SWI C? I'm also wondering how teacher intensive EE and WttW are. I have the Student Intensive Continuation Course C, and I like that it seems fairly independent (I have a baby and a toddler), but it doesn't seem to cover a lit analysis paper. If we cover either EE & WttW, or SICC C this year, will that be enough writing instruction for high school? Allison
  16. I can't decide between these two programs for my 6th grader. I have looked through Narrative 1 and 2, and ELTL 5, and I like them both! I can't decide. If I go with W&R then I need to add grammar, right? Any opinions from those that have used (or looked) at either of these programs? We're supposed to start school in a little over a week, and I'm beginning to panic because I still have so many decisions to make.
  17. Thank you, Lori.😊 You are always a wealth of information. I am considering using the MP materials for the Iliad, I just wanted to make sure it was a good translation before I bought all the resources. I've seen a lot of references to the Fagles translation, but haven't seen much about Butler. I had my son read the three samples you posted, and he picked Butler. Thanks for your help!
  18. Would Fagles or Butler (the one Memoria Press carries) be easier for a 9th grader to read? Thanks!
  19. ThisIsTheDay, did your ds enjoy MFW last year? That was a program I strongly considered, but didn't know how it would work jumping in with world history without having used their ancients year. purplelily, thank you for your list. It always helps me to see what others have done. EndOfOrdinary, I will look at Epic of Gilgamesh. We read an illustrated children's version several years ago that I think he enjoyed. Orelbeilinson, his reading level is fairly average. However, he is dyslexic and therefore reads at a slower pace. I want him to read and enjoy great books, but I don't want to overwhelm him. Sebastian, I agree it is an interesting list.😃 I started out with Notgrass suggestions for world history, and then began making changes, which is why there isn't much of a theme. Do you have any thoughts about replacing some of the selections so there is more of a theme? Thanks for all the thoughts. This is my first high school student, so he gets to be the guinea pig. Hopefully by the time my little ones are in high school I'll know what I'm doing.😊
  20. Thank you, both. Gooblink, I haven't yet decided how many papers I'll have him write. I'm still in the early planning stage. 😊 ThisIsTheDay, What packaged lit course did you use? My ds will most likely be using Notgrass for World history, so I'm using their list as a guide and adding/subbing from it.😊
  21. I am putting a literature list together for my soon to be 10th grader. We're not using a program, just planning on reading and discussing. (ds used BJU lit for 9th and asked not to use a program this coming year) Does this list look sufficient? Too many books? Too few? I am open to other suggestions. He will be doing World history if that matters. Thanks! Ben Hur The Count of Monte Christo The Art of War Julius Caesar King Arthur by Pyle The Pilgrim's Progress Here I Stand A Tale of Two Cities Scarlet Pimpernel The Hiding Place Cry, the Beloved Country Animal Farm The Abolition of Man
  22. Thanks, RootAnn.😊 I'm going to try Elegant Essay with my two oldest next year as well. I'm really hoping it is easy to implement. Allison
  23. Okay, I read through the samples of both levels and I think Narrative 2 looks like a good fit. It may be a little challenging, but that is probably a good thing. Rose, I liked your description of Narrative 2 being a bridge between WWE and WWS. That's sort of where we are now. RootAnn, what have you decided to use after Writing Tales?
  24. Thank you both.😊 Rose, your DD's writing is much more advanced than my DD's.(from the samples you shared). Would you still recommend starting with Narrative 2? Allison
