  1. Thank you for the advice. I will probably continue with R&S for the remainder of the year and then re-evaluate. I guess if ds doesn't mind it, then I shouldn't either!:)
  2. After using a hodgepodge of things for Language Arts the past three years, I finally decided to try R&S English. We are only 3 weeks into the book, but I can't stand it. My ds doesn't mind it too much, but I keep wondering why he needs to learn this at such an early age. I have read the WTM and listened to SWB Writing Without Fear cd, but I still can't figure out why diagramming is necessary at this age. What will happen if I put it on hold until 7th grade? Will it be harder to understand? Please advise. Allison
  3. We are in the Missouri City/ Sugarland area. Before that we were in Austin for several years and we really miss it!:)
  4. Wow! Thanks for all the responses. You all have given me a lot to think about, especially in regards to higher level math. I will obviously have to research TT more thoroughly. My 3rd grader is not struggling with Horizons, he is doing great! I just thought that since Horizons only goes through grade 6, I should start thinking about what to do after......and then I discovered that TT has level 4 coming out soon, and that it might be easier to change now as opposed to later. Also, for those that have used Horizons through level 6, or another program that only goes through the elementary grades, what have you chosen for pre-algebra and up? Thanks!
  5. I didn't want to hijack the thread below, but I am curious about the placement for TT. My ds is 3rd grade, currently using Horizons, and he seems to place in level 5. Is that accurate? Do most dc place higher in TT than in traditional programs? Also, for those of you that have used TT, do you like the program? Do your dc like it? Is the instruction sufficient? Are there enough practice problems? How does it compare to more traditional math programs? I thought I would wait until junior high to try something like TT, but am really considering it for next year. I would appreciate any thoughts.:)
  6. Hi Johanna. I have not used it yet, but I just received the Bigger Hearts Teacher Manual in the mail and have been pouring over it all weekend! My kids are 8 and 9 (2nd and 3rd) and it looks like Bigger is a perfect fit for them. There is so much in the TG! I have never seen one so well laid out and with as much thought put into it. There are poems typed in large font for copywork, dictation sentences, spelling lists(on the easier side), book suggestions, comprehension questions for the emerging reader set. I am so pleased with this curriculum! I truly can't wait to get started. I have tried WP and MFW, and while I think both offer very good programs, I love what I have seen so far from HOD. If you have any more specific questions about Bigger I would be happy to help. Allison
  7. Thanks for the help. It is nice to know there is an IG. My son is a Wiggly Willy, according to Cathy Duffy's book. She didn't give Singapore a very high rating for WW. I will look into MUS again as well. Thanks again!
  8. Would this be a good choice for a child who struggles to understand math concepts? We are currently using Horizons 2. I bought BJU math and couldn't get past the huge TM and all the extras! But I'm thinking we need to make a change. He is doing okay, because he knows the patterns to the Horizons worksheets and the problems, but he is not grasping all the concepts. Singapore has always scared me a little, not following typical scope and sequence, and no TM, but I'm considering it for this ds. Any advice would be appreciated. Oh, and I had him do the placement test and he scored in 1 B, which I thought was kinda low considering he's half way through Horizons 2.
