  1. please share your favorite things to do in nashville and the surrounding area, particularly music venues (free better than pricey) and with kids. thanks.
  2. Not in my house! I am adding to our book collection and making our home a no-screen-book-reading zone! :001_smile:
  3. I don't think that sacrosanct can replace it because it means that something is sacred, while "Sacred Cow" means something that is held as sacred but isn't. I want to convey the exact idea of "Sacred Cow" without saying "Sacred Cow." :tongue_smilie:
  4. This. To someone who holds a sacred cow, to be sacred, it is offensive because the idiom is used to imply that something that is held as sacred (like a cow) should not be. Hindus, I think, would say that sacred cows are sacred and as such should not be used to refer to something that is, in fact, not sacred.
  5. I do not wish to offend. Please take no offense. I want something to replace the term "Sacred Cows" which I realize is not okay but still conveys what I am trying to say. What can I use instead?
  6. Thanks! That was kind of you. :001_smile:
  7. What would you see / do in eastern Oklahoma? Thanks!
  8. I have been thinking about Ma Ingalls - we've been listening to all of the Little House audio books - and wonder if she could have really been that good, that patient. On my blog post today I ask if Ma Ingalls ever just lost it. Sometimes, I do. When you listen (read) the books, it is as if she never raises her voice, never loses her calm, never has ENOUGH of all the hardship. Has anyone researched this topic and found that Laura whitewashed their lives? Left out the bits where Ma goes nuts? Or was she really that saintly? I love, love, love my kids and spend every minute with them. But I know that I would have taken a few hikes across the prairie if I were in Ma's shoes!
  9. Thank you for both of your replies. I am off to read about them on amazon.
  10. My ds9 is starting to ask the specifics of how babies are made - the technical side of things - he knows all body parts and that sperm and egg have to join, etc. Now he wants to know how they join. He is sensitive but also very silly. I want to present information in a manner that will answer his questions but not have him freaking out, or making jokes, or explaining it to his younger brother. Is there a book that is good for boys this age? Or, do you have any other ideas? Thank you.
  11. I have to give my dd14 grades for the first time. We have always worked on a page/concept until it is at 100% for her knowledge sake but not for a grade. Now, I don't know how to assess what grades she has in each subject. What would you do?
  12. Thanks for all of the replies. I am off to research! :)
  13. If you were going to visit one city in Tennessee which would it be and why?
  14. It's an old-fashioned little plastic toy that encloses tiny metal balls and you move it around until the tiny balls fall into holes in the cardboard backing? I want to order some and can't figure out how to search for them. They are often in goody-bags. Thanks!
  15. anyone have any thoughts for me? I am still in pain.
  16. I played tickle-monster with my ds8 three days ago. At one point it felt as if his finger got under my rib and pulled it away from my body - OUCH! It has been hurting ever since. Nothing is sticking out but it hurts to take a deep breath, laugh, bend over, lift, touch the area (it's at the top of my rib cage). What could this be? What should I do?
  17. I've been thinking about LOVE a lot. How do YOU love unconditionally? How do you know that you are loving unconditionally? And, what does that look like in action?
  18. That's what I thought. :crying: Thanks for the :grouphug:
  19. A friend loaned me her ivory-color cashmere sweater. I hand washed it carefully according to instructions and laid it to dry. My ds5 put a metal-rimmed mirror on it. I found it hours later. Now there's a circular gray stain on the front of the sweater! I tried laundering it again and it did not come out. Will a dry cleaner be able to fix this? If not, I will be purchasing a new (very expensive) sweater for her and owning a stained sweater I don't want! Any advice?
