We are starting WWII and would like to see some good films or documentaries that would be OK to watch with younger dc. No Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. Can you recommend any?

I just don't get it. What do you do with all of those CDs? How do you apply it? Is there a manual? What do you really have to buy use? What does it look like on a daily basis? I am always interested but can't seem to "get it" so I don't buy it.

I have water in my ear - what should I do about it?
dorothy replied to ELaurie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
take a tissue and roll one end until it is thick and pointy lay down on your back with your head hanging over the side of your bed (the top of your head will be pointing to the floor) gently ease the pointy tissue into the water-logged ear until it "pops" the water will come right out -
Can anyone tell me about the Oka area (near Montreal). We have an offer to stay in a house in an apple orchard in that area this August and I wonder if it would be a nice area to visit. If you know it, please tell me about it. Besides playing hide-and-go-seek in the orchard, visiting Montreal and QC, what would be your not-to-miss experiences: food, history, religious sites, outdoor adventures. We are interested in it all (well, not amusement parks). Thanks.

Any experience with this program? We are considering a tutor for Latin and he uses this. TIA

Christian Hair Question......
dorothy replied to astrid's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I was NOT offended by the post in any way. I am NOT telling anyone else what to do or say! I should have elaborated my point in my first post. I was only taking on the Christian Hair thing because I think it is a classic example of how things THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH CHRIST get turned into "Christian This or That". The Duggars can do whatever with their hair and it has NOTHING to do with Christianity. That was my point. I am not making a grammatical argument nor do I care to restrict anyone from continuing to call things Christian. I am only saying that I do not as I think it improperly "labels" them. What's more, I carry this over to people. When I hear, "Oh, she's dating a Christian guy." I reply with , "Oh, you mean a sinner?" That's all Folks.- 146 replies

Christian Hair Question......
dorothy replied to astrid's topic in General Education Discussion Board
This is a personal thing I am sharing. People are always describing things as being "Christian" or "not Christian" and it drives me nuts. For example, I say there is no such thing as Christian Rock Music. There is rock music sung by people who proclaim (maybe true or false) to be following Christ. Christians use the term Christian this or that to almost give a seal of approval to a person, thing, or event. Well, that's quite a label, IMO! Really? Would Christ have thought so? Non-Christians often use Christian as an adjective when trying to lump something together that they do not necessarily agree with like "Christian Politics" or "Christian Hair." I truly believe that Christian should refer only to a follower of Christ (as in the New Testament) and not to label things which in and of themselves cannot possibly be Christ-like. I will get off of my soapbox now. :001_smile:- 146 replies

I like to say that "Christian" should only be used as a NOUN and never as an ADJECTIVE.- 146 replies

I want the most pared down plan possible for my 6th grader.
dorothy replied to dorothy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
what would be the basic, rigorous, no-nonsense, thorough curriculum to do it? For PE, does a one-mile run in the AM and then again in the PM plus gymnastics twice a week cover enough or do I need more? (We have never done sit ups/push ups, etc) What would be the best math curriculum to do this with - again basic/rigorous. Thanks. -

If anyone else has opinions, I would love to hear them. Thanks. -
What would your totally basic but rigorous schedule for a 6th grader look like? I think math, latin, writing, and history. I think I would use history for copywork/dictation/memorization and writing assignments. What would you pick for simple/rigorous curiculum and do you feel that any other subject is a MUST for this grade. I have read LCC and I want to get even simpler than that. TIA

jambalaya sort of thing: I sauteed onions, celery (had a bit), garlic, red bell pepper in vegie oil. Then, I added the crumbled sausage. Once that was cooked through, I added several cups of rice (all gone now), 1/2 box of chicken broth, and one can of crushed tomatoes. I seasoned with salt, pepper, a little cayenne, brought it to a boil, covered it up, set it to simmer, and BOY IS IT GOOD! I was totally inspired by the people on this board. Before posting I was looking at those measly sausages thinking they would never do, but it's like the fishes and the loaves! Thank you for all of the delicious recipes. I am saving this thread and buying more sausages as soon as possible!! :)

I am LOW on ingredients and meal ideas and have to feed my family of 8 tonight with one pkg. of mild Italian sausages. I have no pasta. For grains I have rice and cornmeal. I do have frozen vegies: brussel sprouts, green beans, and corn. I have onions and garlic. So, I need to bulk up and fill some bellies with not a lot. Ideas? TIA

Any avenue you take people down here think you mean Spanish but said Latin. You ask for a Latin tutor and they tell you about the great Colombian guy who has been tutoring their kids for years. You google it and get a million entries for Latin music, dance, dates, people, etc. You try contacting the Classics Department at the local university and NO ONE EVER returns your calls. UGH. I wish there was an intellectual life with a pulse down here. Hello - I said Latin - the LANGUAGE - and I DO NOT mean Spanish!!! And, no, I do not need Salsa lessons. :glare: Thank you very much.

can you tell me what I need to purchase to instruct the children? Do I need a TM and student workbook? OR, just the student workbook? Anything else? Thanks.
-
I do not see people posting about this but it looks good to me - clean and simple cursive. Anyone like/dislike it? If I go with it, do I need to buy the TM? What should I buy for a 4th and 6th grader? The 6th grader has bad handwriting. Thanks.

Anyone try these? What do you think? Favorites? TIA
