Not sure how far you are from Hudson, WI but Special Children Center is located there. My ds has been in OT there for 1 1/2 years for SPD. It has been a very good experience for us. Our insurance covers most of the cost. The PS he was at would not acknowledge his difficulties, although other schools within the district unofficially help kids with SPD. If you can afford it and get it approved, I would definately go with private OT. Good luck, Kirstin

I would love to hear about neurofeedback successes
kiki replied to Pajama Mama's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
We did feedback with two of our children. We dd has add and ds has add, spd, apd, dyslexia, anxiety and probably something else which I am forgetting. We did see progress with both kids. DD is able to focus better, her math scores are MUCH improved. Ds sleeps in his own room now!!!!!, is better able to tolerate loud noise, follows directions better, listens longer, was able to write on a line better. In general, we have seen lots of things but many things were very subtle and hard to put into words. HTH, KIrstin -
Cost of Testing, Therapy, Tutoring ?
kiki replied to HeidiD's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
We pay our co-pay for each visit. Our insurance generally doesn't cover Speech and Language but our therapists had the pediatrician's office count the number of ear infections each of the kids had from the first infection to the last infection and amazingly they covered it. Insurance covered about 70% of APD testing. Ask your provider for the insruance codes that they think would be applicable and then call your insurance, this is what we did for APD testing. Good Luck, Kirstin -
Hi Dd almost 11 needs a project. She needs some challenge but a fun challenge. She does not like to write but some writing would be good. Any ideas? I have asked her but she doesn't really say. Thanks, Kirstin

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good probotic? DS's OT recommended that he take this for a while. He doesn't do pills. Any other probotic suggestions would be great! TIA, Kirstin

My ds just started this on Monday. He was also doing a spin protocol during AIT, we are continuing the spinning at home. Tomorrow will be our first day. Kirstin -
How do you pay for Vision Therapy?
kiki replied to Renee in NC's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
We are using a Home Equity loan. We just don't have $400 a month plus gas. Kirstin -
My ds has this issue too. We have done a lot of practice lately. We started with touch whatever with your _____ hand. Then we moved to touch your _____ knee with your ______ hand. Now we are comparing sides, is the bag to the left or the right of the chair? We also randomly say am I holding the pen with my right hand or my left hand. With a lot of practive he has gotten better. Oh there was a time he had to hold a pencil in his writing hand to help him remember that it was his right hand. HTH, Kirstin

What do you do when a behavior problem interrupts school?
kiki replied to Wendi's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Great question! Ds was way off today. He did have to finish his work this afternoon so he could watch the Olympics. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. Kirstin -
Would you mind sharing the combination you are doing? Please PM me if you would. TIA, Kirstin

DD giving me a hard time about VT...help!
kiki replied to Twinmom's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
We also use "power pellets" when ds is tired. A couple of Skittles goes a long way. Kirstin -

What part of the PATH program are you using, motion or reading? We are using the PATH motion at home. One thing that we have done is implement a chip system. My ds can earn 3 chips for the PATH program, one for attitude, one for program completion, and one for reading afterward. He is also doing IM so he can earn 2 chips there. He can "buy" rewards with the chips, 1 chip= mountain biking, 4 chips=going to the driving range, 35 chips=going to a MN Twins game, etc... We have found if he has a specific goal and can figure out how many chips he needs therapies go much better. Also in the motion PATH, there is a chart that shows where my son started, where he is now, and where he needs to be. He finds this very motivating. HTH, Kirstin
