  1. I am so raw just reading this and thinking about John McCain's battle, his courage, and the horrid brutality of this cancer. My family has followed his journey daily since my beloved dad was diagnosed with glioblastoma at the end of March (and passed on July 11th). My sister texted me yesterday morning with the news about Senator McCain, and I haven't been able to get him and his family out of my thoughts since then. I pray that his final days/weeks are as peaceful and gentle and pain-free as possible. I pray that he is alert enough to express and receive love to the very end. I pray that he will be able to find closure with anything he needs to find closure with. And above all, I pray that he does not suffer any more.

  2. My boys are avid soccer fans, and so yes, we are watching as many World Cup games as we can. They recorded today's Germany-Mexico match so they could see it after church.

We also do a family World Cup bracket challenge similar to basketball's March Madness.

  3. I have one similar to this one: LG306G (actually mine is a 305C...the "G" and "C" indicate which cell phone towers are used...I think).

I don't know if it is still available on the Tracfone site; I bought mine from Amazon back in the day.

It does not have data capabilities, and it has a touch-screen keyboard (but you have to press a "keyboard" button each time to access it...the one that comes up by default is the multiple-punching one that you mentioned).

I paid $4 for the phone 4 years ago and have since added a "year service" each year to extend its use. It costs me around $45 a year to keep the phone active, and I only use it for must-call situations, so I've only added minutes once that I remember. lol!

  4. Thank you for this! I just ordered a new tankini suit and coverup for my daughter and a coverup for me.

I have two LE tankini sets...one with shorter "swim shorts" and the other with the longer board shorts. I love, love, love those board shorts. They have nice, deep POCKETS. (They are several years old, so I don't know if they have changed...but they still look and feel great).

  5. I hope you have a nice party for your son!

Both my dh and my older ds are excruciatingly literal. And dh has a thing with name brands, too. If I ask him to bring me a kleenex, he will come back (10 minutes later, probably), and say that he couldn't find a "kleenex" anywhere in the whole house. And I'll say, "they are just on the side table in the living room". And dh will answer, "those are 'Home Sense Facial Tissues'. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? lol!!!! We have had so many laughs about this in our 24 years of marriage.

And now older ds has a special friend...and I soooooo want to warn her about his literalness but I'll guess I'll leave that fun for her to discover! ?

Found this site the other day, highschoolmathlive.com,   Regina London, instructor for Calc and AP Calc, responded quickly and thoroughly to my questions.

    Any reviews out there?

This looks fabulous @LAR! The instructor's method of organizing her class meeting made me positively giddy with delight!  ? Did you decide to try it?

  7. I'm partial to Derek Owens myself. Although we have not used his physics program, we have used several of his math courses, and my son really connected with DO's style, format, and sense of humor. This son is highly driven, so he had no problem whatsoever scheduling out the course himself and meeting his self-imposed deadlines. He loved the flexibility of making his own schedule and not being tied down to an outside entity's schedule. My second son would have struggled with that "freedom", so we used an online school for his upper math courses.

I'm not familiar with Dr. Wile's new editions. I did tutor a poor physics student once who was struggling with the Apologia physics program, and to be brutally honest, that text made me want to put my head through a wall. Ha! Maybe the newer program via Dr. Wile is better??? Have you been able to to look at that textbook?

Good luck with your decision! I'm so sorry that Clover Creek filled up so quickly. ?

  8. Thank you so much for your kind words, your shared stories, the links, your advice, and your words of wisdom. I'm sorry that it has taken me a few days to respond; I can see that I am going to have very little time over the next months to spend on this beloved forum.

Just briefly...my dad is 78 so past the age where more aggressive treatment is considered "safe". He has in-home physical and occupational therapy right now, and they have indicated that we should go ahead and arrange for hospice. We have moved quickly to take care of several legal and real estate matters, but like @Patty Joanna mentioned, we are trying to be sensitive and not make it a death march. That was a memorable statement!

We do have several moments of humor each day (similar to those you all have mentioned). Dad often says the wrong word...even when he sees the correct word(s) in his mind. This is a very curious situation, and although it is frustrating, it has been very funny at times. He laughs then cries then sleeps all within a few minutes. Sometimes he is very talkative, and other times he is so very quiet. He is extremely anxious when visitors are there, and he is going to bed earlier and earlier each day. He is using a walker almost full-time now (he was walking three 16-minute miles just 2 months ago...).

Thank you for suggesting that he write down thoughts and stories. My brother-in-law suggested this at the onset, and so Dad is dictating letters to each grandchild.

I may PM a few of you as things progress if I have any specific questions. The decision about chemo/radiation has not been made yet; I'm taking Dad to another consultation with his neuro-oncologist this Wednesday.

    Much, much appreciation!! Jetta

  9. My dad was recently diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (grade IV with multiple tumors in more than one lobe of his brain). The initial shock and complete disbelief has abated (somewhat), and so now we are trying to plan how best to handle the remaining bit of his life. We want it to be as positive and as enjoyable as possible for as long as possible...which we understand may not be very long at all.

Does anyone have direct experience as the caregiver of a loved one with this horrible disease? I'd love to have someone to talk with about it! I've tried reading cancer support websites and forums for information, but I have not found specific help and advice. People are so vague in their answers! I guess we do that (as humans) in an effort to soften the blow, but don't caregivers need to know what might happen in order to prepare themselves mentally? Maybe it is just my personality type, but I want to know what might happen to Dad as he progresses so that I can know how best to respond. For example, all sources of information say that the glio patient may exhibit personality changes. What exactly does this mean? If he is already strong-willed and stubborn, will he become compliant? For some reason, I don't think this is the case...

If perchance anyone has been through this, I would also love to hear information on the benefits vs. side effects of treatment plans. Dad has survived both recurring laryngeal cancer and stage 3 colon cancer, so he is no stranger to cancer treatment. But this particular cancer is so different. It is inoperable and incurable. Dad's neuro-oncologist has recommended a short round of combined chemo and radiation, but we are seriously doubting if that is the wisest thing to do. I've read from multiple studies that palliative chemo can actually reduce the quality of life (while yet extending it...). What a terrible decision to have to make! Any thoughts? I would love to hear your stories!

Finally, on a self-centered note, I have been experiencing some severe bouts of anxiety since the initial diagnosis of "multiple brain tumors" (even before we learned that it was, in fact, glioblastoma). The FEAR is sometimes crushing. Thankfully, I have found some helpful tips to deal with the anxiety when it appears, but I sure would like to prevent these anxiety attacks from ever happening at all!  Is that an impossible wish? :-(

    Thank you!

  11. I'm trying so hard to lose weight and get in shape (one that is not so reminiscent of this particular day..ha!) that I announced that I wasn't making pie this year. There was momentary anarchy. Younger son promptly drove to town and came back with a bakery apple pie and vanilla ice cream, and everyone was happy. Except me. lol!!!

My sons are thrilled that ESPN has pi beside their logo today (watching first four in game).

  12. Thank you so much for all of these wonderful ideas! This list should keep me exploring and tasting for a while. The starter set my husband gave me came from Plum Deluxe, and it included a fine mesh strainer that works well. I especially enjoyed the blends with chunks of citrus fruit in them...for some reason, they just taste like morning should taste. :-)

  13. My husband gave me a wonderful starter set of various loose leaf tea blends for Christmas, and I have enjoyed them immensely. The tea has helped me reduce my coffee-with-lots-of-cream habit to just one cup of that goodness a day. But alas, I am nearing the end of the gift and would like to order some more.

I am a complete novice at this, so I need some ideas for online sources of loose leaf tea blends. What are reasonable prices? And what are some of your favorite blends?

    Thanks!
