  1. Hi! ☺️

We took our daughter last summer when she was 12. She loved the Art Institute and the Museum of Science and Industry (some great physics there!). She also enjoyed the river boat tour. She HATED the El.

Surprising to us, her favorite thing to do was go to beaches along Lake Michigan. When we realized this, we changed some of our plans to include some extended time on the beach.

When we took our sons as tweens, we included a Cubs game. That was the highlight of their trip to Chicago!

  2. Yes, we have cow killers (aka "red velvet ants") in the Memphis area. I have unfortunately been stung by one, and my foot swelled and deflated and swelled and deflated for at least a month afterwards. This, despite using a baking soda slurry to "draw out the poison" (in my grandmother's words)! 🙂

The interesting thing about cow killers is that the female is LARGE and wingless and always angry (easily provoked). The male is smaller and has wings.

  3. My older son took it years ago. It was not a huge leap from DO's precalc at all. I cannot remember clearly, but it seems that the exam review at the end wasn't very scheduled (this might have changed since then!). My son had to self-initiate to review, but he was definitely well-prepared for the AP exam.

I've had several students just take the course without doing the AP exam because they wanted to start the calculus track at their university with Calc 1. They were all very prepared to do that.

  4. Look for 100% felt pads for your area rugs (no rubber, PVC, or latex backing). Supposedly, this will prevent discoloration, but since I've had discoloration on my hardwoods (21 years old) from strong sunlight, I would expect that it might happen anyway.

I recently purchased a large wool braided rug for our bedroom, and it is soooo beautiful that I feel that I've added artwork to the room.

  5. I have a 12 year old non-trendy daughter, too. Thank goodness she is a soccer fanatic. Her "wow" gift this year is a Barcelona replica jersey.

She does like jewelry and has begun to build a collection of necklaces and bracelets. For her birthday last summer, her brother gave her a sea turtle tracking bracelet that she absolutely LOVES. If you look into something like this, make sure you are purchasing from a real source that supports a real conservancy.

Anyway, I saw this gorgeous jewelry organizer on Pottery Barn Teen that would help her keep her jewelry in one place: https://www.pbteen.com/products/script-monogram-wall-storage/?pkey=s~jewelry organizer~45

I thought it was too expensive (and now it won't come until after Christmas), but it did give me the idea of looking for something like that locally (without monogram, but still attractive).

    Or are they just errors?

We used LL4 and found several errors over the course of the year. Like you, we appreciated the content and lessons, so I did not let it bother me. I just corrected and went on. There is no need to second-guess yourself; you are obviously a careful and aware reader.

If LL6 is brand new, you might want to occasionally send the publisher a list of errors you find so that they can correct those in future publications.

And just fyi, I agree with both your points. "Battalion is" and "the rest". 😊

What To Avoid = Once a Week Honors Science Instruction. 😉

In many cases, this is unfortunately true. But I also believe (hope) that it can be done quite successfully! If the teacher is willing to interact with students outside of that class time (via discussion board, email, or the like), the student may find himself in a very engaging, active, challenging course. 🤭

  8. My sister and family just returned from the Smokies. She said she has never seen it so crowded. They were not able to do several hikes they were interested in because of the crowds (and these were "moderate" level hikes---not the ones like Laurel Falls that always attract so many). She said Gatlinburg was unbelievable...her exact quote was that there were 20 million people there.

  9. My son got married March 21 in a live-streamed wedding with only immediate family present (we bumped their wedding up 6 weeks in order to have it before the shelter-in-place order was issued for our state). I did not buy a new dress for the occasion; instead, I wore dressy pants and a two-part blouse that I already owned. I felt perfectly at ease!

  10. Well...we had a wedding today!!! 😄🥰

After deciding on Tuesday to cancel their big wedding scheduled for May 2 (I whined about this in the Day 3 thread), my son and his bride decided to go ahead and get married ASAP. So we have scrambled to get the plans, furniture, necessities together so that they could marry today. We contacted all 350 people who had been invited to the original wedding and gave them the link to the live stream of today's wedding on YouTube. Only the two immediate families and the minister were actually present at the church. No favorite aunts or best friends forever were there...which was sad...but the wedding was SO precious and intimate. I highly recommend it if anyone else finds themselves in the same situation!

They can't go to a hotel and they can't even go out to dinner, but I am sure they will be just fine!

  11. You might check out Canvas. It has a free-for-teachers option that is quite good; it includes file sharing, discussion boards, test writing software, etc. etc. I switched to it this year, and I've been quite pleased with it! Canvas also offers a free live meeting program (Big Blue Button...or something like that), but I didn't like it, so I do pay for a monthly subscription to Zoom for my live class meetings.

I hope Zoom will be able to handle its sudden burgeoning load!!
