  1. Ds 6 here started with Bob books and very simple readers when he was 4-1/2, then he wanted to do big brother's 100ez at 5. We raced through the first 30 lessons and he was bored and didn't really need it. We just kept him reading every day. All of a sudden about 6 months ago, he found a series of books that he really wanted to read. He read them all in about 2 months. Since then he's found two other series he likes. He checks out a pile every library visit. These are on a 2-3 gr. reading level but he also reads things up to 5th gr. level now, everything he gets his hands on.

So, my experience with different reading abilities is that a formal program may be unnecessary for your ds. It was with one ds here. Reading and language come easily to him. One ds here was a whole other story -- he really needed the slow progress through 100ez and phonics pathways and ETC to feel more comfortable with reading.

If you see ds not really needing the formal program, I'd give it a try. You can always go back if you see a gap, but alot of reading is just learn as you go, making it a chore for a natural reader just gets in the way, I think. :)

  2. Otherwise, it is pretty obvious, to me, who is replying to whom and about what. It's just how the general flow of the conversation goes in the standard format.

Actually, I think it gets pretty tricky to follow in the longer threads. I have to go back up and look at the lines to figure things out sometimes, and I've replied to a different post than the one I meant to a couple times. Some of you are familiar with this board style from other places, but for those of us just getting used to it, it can seem less logical.

Hybrid works best imo, otherwise folks would be doing quotes all the time, just more stuff to scroll through.

  3. I've never seen a list of toys that matches so closely with what ds here play with -- we could swap houses! lol

We've done the same here, limit what's available. Sounds like you're mostly getting together to enjoy the company, so a few well-chosen toys should be just fine. And all those painstakingly constructed legos are put safely out of reach!

Most of all, make it possible for you to continue in a way that won't be too much for you health-wise, since it sounds like you enjoy it!

  4. Have dc put away the game or bin they're playing with before they get the next one out. That's helped me here even if I'm not really strict with it. It's a good habit. Wish I did it more with my stuff!

Totally agree with others here about guests and toys, we just announce a clean-up about 5 min. before friends leave. All our friends do it too, because none of the kids want to be stuck with the cleanup by themselves later. And dc know that they can come to me quietly if a playmate is going wild dumping everything out.

For your dc, maybe they could have an area or two to leave toys around and other areas (like the den) where they have to be picked up each day. It just keeps the chaos down a bit, at least for me.

As for your dh, well, you'll just have to figure out an appropriate punishment there.....lol.

  5. Hi Rhesa,

    Did you get an answer?

The 888 reading challenge is 8 books in 8 categories for 2008 = 64 books for the year. I think the idea is that you get a good overview of each of your 8 categories by reading several books about it.

Categories are whatever you choose, some that I've seen mentioned here -- local history, biography, mystery, nonfiction, historical fiction, books you never read as a kid, newbery winners, a particular author, "movies that made you want to read the book," politics of the middle east, nature, children's classics, christian writings, self-improvement, homeschooling.

Some people started with a complete list prepared of all 8 categories with 64 books. Some people have chosen their categories with a few books intended for each to be completed as they work through the year. And some have a few categories chosen with a couple categories left unnamed to be developed as they fill in later.

For me, the goal is to get me reading more, and not just about homeschooling!

Have fun if you try it.:)

  6. about sticking with it, not giving up. Like you said, Eli's almost sacked and the receiver catches it against his helmet and holds on! Amazing. But the Patriots sure showed why they've been undefeated, they didn't give up either.

The only sour note -- it was unfortunate to see Belichick (?) leave like that, I was surprised he didn't stick with the team. I'm sure the game was a heartbreaker for the Patriots fans, but it was a fantastic season.

  7. (Did I ever tell you about the place that wouldn't sell ham to my friend b/c she was going to serve it with cantaloupe? )

Wow. Melone e proscuitto is a summer staple in Italy. Sounds like a little mediterranean snob there!

Reminds me of the lovely Venezuelan couple who very confidently informed us that "Spain is NOT a European country." It's all in the history, huh? Anyway, it's late, thanks for the laugh.

  8. My folks live in an area where a very special inn or restaurant is a rare treasure. Sounds like that may be the case for you too.

I've only read a few posts, so perhaps you already dealt with this, but I would say that you do want to make personal contact. If there are only 6 rooms, that's just 12 "rooms" booked over a weekend. Not a whole lot when they lose 2 of those room receipts. Especially since there was, in essence, no cancellation so no opportunity to rebook the rooms.

If you've gone there just a couple times, maybe not such a big deal. But if this has been a periodic get-away for you two for a number of years, and you've got a rapport with the innkeepers, I could understand his tone.

I'd call -- particularly if this is a unique place for you -- and explain, offer to cover the 2nd night and let him know that you hope things are mended so that you can happily plan for your next visit.

    Good luck.:o

  9. Y'all need to get to a Cub Scout Pinewood Derby to see real parental involvement in a kid's project!!

Seriously, though, it sounds like the judges really aren't used to seeing quality kid-driven work up to now, so they couldn't believe it when they did see it. And that's just kinda sad. Hope she's doing ok.

  10. Hi Heather,

Well, I just typed up a whole reply with some ideas and commisseration, but the board had logged me out a few minutes ago....?

Anyway, I did a youtube search for a Michael Jordan video and found this, not the exact one, but still worth seeing. I've started talking with my ds about this tendency to melt down about stuff, often over small things. Partly it's the age, 8-9 seems to be more fragile all of a sudden! And partly it's that perfectionist tendency.

Part of my strategy has been to talk about choices, and his choice to make a huge issue over something that isn't. The other part of my strategy has been to give him tools to work around/with these issues. He's learned to type so that slight imperfections in cursive handwriting don't make the science experiment sheet take an hour to write up, for instance. I'm also trying to calmly help him stick with something to work at it if he doesn't instantly and completely grasp the concept, pattern, whatever.

Perhaps something here will help. Good luck!:o

  11. Wow, what an amazing process your dd did. As a old science major, I'm really impressed. I don't have any wisdom for you, we haven't gone this route, my ds are younger than your dd.

If it's any consolation to you, it seems that your dd has obviously learned alot about setting up and conducting an experiment, using a variety of resources, professional consultation, and doing the final presentation. That will take her a lot farther than any award for the catchiest title. And if she's interested, she can store that tidbit away and wow them with amazing scientific method and a shocking title next time around.

Sorry the results all around didn't seem to match the efforts. And no you're not being a dope. You're a disappointed mom, or should I say, a proud mom disappointed that the results weren't better? Congratulate the dd for an impressive effort. hth

  12. You've inspired my ds! They love sculpey and chess and were very intrigued to see what your ds had done. Thanks for all the details about creating the pieces. They just discovered sculpey a few months ago and have been surprisingly adept with it. They particularly enjoyed hearing how he achieved some of the effects for texture and antiquing. Thanks!

  13. Second this! My 6yo is a very strong reader with strong verbal skills so we started Latin orally. We use Prima Latina, listen to the cds and I write on the white board to show dss the vocab involved for derivatives, endings, spelling. It's worked very well, dss love Latin and so far are learning and retaining well without all the bookwork.

I'll be looking at the recommendations here for the next step. I've been pleasantly surprised at how well this is going.

  14. I log in, it says "welcome" and brings me to the forums page, and then before I know it, I'm logged out somehow and "may not" do all the stuff. Sometimes I've walked away from the computer, sometimes I've followed a link, or checked my email, sometimes I've been here just browsing around a little, and I'm logged out.

Has anyone else had this happen? Is there something I'm supposed to be doing? Should I be asking the admin folks?

    TIA!

  15. And as far as "posting for the sake of posting" ---ummmmmm, isn't that what this board is all about?

I do think that with the newness of the boards and all the little levels based on # of posts, that some posts have been mostly for the sake of boosting to the next level. There have always been a number of posts that are pretty far from homeschool issues, but they're about issues that are in our lives, so they are in essence about us/homeschoolers. No harm, no foul. You never know what you'll learn here.

Go ahead and post your art. People post links to their kids' art, their blogs, their projects all the time. Take it or leave it, like someone (Ms. Mungo?) said. If it bothers you so much that you (generic) feel the compulsion to post a negative, then own up to it at least. But then we'll digress to one of my pet peeves with the new format -- all this rating junk. Who's got the time?

    Forget this and go create!

  16. But it was enjoyable. This was a pretty complicated story and took time to develop in the book to get the nuances of behaviors, I thought. From Miss Norris' meanness, Tom's troubles, the problems with the Crawfords' character, etc. -- that's alot to convey in 1-1/2 hours.

Persuasion, on the other hand, from Anne's perspective, would be easier to film since it's more linear and covers less actual time.

The chasing through the house and grounds and then dancing on the grass at the end made me smile, because it was so similar to Persuasion's conclusion, and didn't make as much sense.

Ah well, like someone here said, I'd probably watch Austen done with poodles.

  17. What a great visual! That really describes it for me too!

Another thing that I don't care for is the whole ratings/reputation/competition to have stars and different labels and color codes and whatever. That just feels like way too much work and time for a message board and way too highschool clique-y. I know some folks are into it, and that's cool too, but those are the valid reasons that I (and perhaps others) do miss the old board styles. And I've avoided other boards in this style before because, for me, the wtm boards were so much more open and friendly. But like they say, ymmv.

And I do appreciate what SWB and PHP have gone through to keep these boards available to us all!:o

  19. Definitely. I almost didn't answer your question! I know it's wonderful and creative and more expressive and quite organized and all that. I'm sure I'll use it for posting and to get specific information.

But it just feels like work now. Sorry SWB, and everyone else who loves it, that's just how it feels for me. It's not the easy drop by style it used to be. With all the add-ons and personal bios in every single post, it's alot of space to get through each thread. Perhaps this will encourage me to spend time doing something more productive, like organizing. ;P

  20. Kalanamak said it beautifully for me! It seems to be a welcome change for many who have more computer time than I'm able to do. I loved the old boards for the easy scan I could do, and breezy way I could see what was going on. I'm sure I'll still come for specific questions and topics, but I doubt that I'll drop in like I used to. And in the long run that's probably a really good change for my life, there's lots that I should be doing!
