  1. Yep, I've read it. I have both the older version and the newer edition. I used to refer the them often and I can usually get that same excitement back that I got when I read it the first time. For me it was a great intro to homeschooling and it helped me explain to my husband what I was about to embark on. For a newbie it gave me a basic outline that I could refer to and feel confident in picking my own curriculum but having a basic guide to follow. I don't actually use the book all that much anymore, but it did give me the confidence I needed, so I value it a lot.
  2. I'm laughing with you:) I think it's ridiculous for someone to still be upset over something that happened so long ago. I wouldn't even worry about it.
  3. I always think certain books would make great references and they do. I think those are keeper's. My dh and I love to continue learning and if something pop's up on tv or in conversation I love to be able to pull out a book and look it up. Isn't that why we all buy so many books?:)
  4. I would do a little of both. I plan on saving Omnibus for all of my kids especially since the cost is so hefty. I plan on saving our latin program because it has worked for us and was also costly. Things that are tried and true for us like certain history books, art books and other favorite books to turn to I save. Things like math, grammar, science curriculum I would probably just sell and replace when you need them. Same with Hhstory if I had a full curriculum, but I have lots of different things. I think I will just keep my SOTW's and my Guerber's books instead of replacing later. Just my thoughts on how I do things around here:) My age gap is about 6 years between the youngest and the next up so I will be implementing this myself.
  5. I do. I have found a couple of long lost cousins and so it's nice to keep in touch. I don't have too many friends who are on myspace, but I like having it there for chatting once in awhile.
  6. Thank you Tap,tap, tap! I had never heard of them before and even a google search wasn't much help.
  7. I'm confused about Rock Solid, what is it? The link didn't lead to any kind of store.
  8. Nope, mine doesn't. It's an excellent group of Dr's and I love the office. I don't believe it's standard at all.
  9. I had one of those mom's that announced it to the entire world! I was so embarrased!!
  10. I was twelve. Always seemed about average to me. My 9 ds is starting to have bodily changes as well and it's a bit strange. My 13 ds is just beginning himself, he didn't start early like his brother is.
  11. Bought the book in 2001 and found the boards right away. Been here ever since. I'm not a huge poster but I pipe up every once in awhile. Love this place and really feel like it's my big group of extended family. You can get an answer to almost anything.
  12. I would never use my house to pay off debt. I just feel it's too important where I live to risk it just for credit card debt. For us I had to start a very minimal part time job to make a dent in our debt. I only pay the minimum on all cards except one I try and pay even a tiny bit more. The tendency it too borrow on your house, pay off the debt and feel such a relief that you don't (or I stupidly didn't) realize you are using the cards again and it add's up. It seems like it's just a little use on this or that credit card that I can pay off and it just builds and builds. That's was my big mistake and now I am just doing it with patience. It hurts to see them still high, but they will go down. I don't use my credit cards for anything while I am trying to get out of debt, then I am going to budget and use a rewards card for my fixed expenses because it has benefits, but I need to have discipline.
  13. Same here Daisy. I grew up in SoCal and didn't even wear any kind of shoe for the entire summer, but for my boys I feel it's safer to wear shoes. I think if I still lived by the beach I probably wouldn't care, but I live in a much hotter place now and am not in the habit of going barefoot anymore. We just don't do that around here, but back home I loved being barefoot and would have never put on shoes for biking. So I guess I'm not much help. My mom never made me and I never had any trouble, but I can see the why it's safer to wear shoes and so that's our rule.
  14. We had a great experience and would definitely go there again. I bought our SUV and it has been a great car. The fun part for me was test driving cars I would never have thought of buying and finding one I liked. It was also great for me to have the prices right on the car. I hate dealing with sales people and it was very low stress.
  15. :iagree:I think I agree with you, maybe we will change our's too! We go by TigerBear Academy
  16. I'm almost completely Puerto Rican except for a tiny bit (maybe 20%) of German on my dad's side. My mom's family is from Puerto Rico but farther back they are from Spain so we are spaniards. My mom looks completely white, blond hair, very light skin and she is 100%.
  17. I love that and I didn't even catch it! Did you hear about the last movie being made into two movies? I'm very excited.......I love Harry Potter!
  18. I wasn't taking you to task with what you feel has redeeming value. That's great that you don't feel the need to read something like that, but every family is different. Which is why I was just giving Kate a different view of the book. I personally found it very interesting and of value to me.
  19. Hey Beth, Where can I find the rest of that list. I would love to have a heads up when we hit books I am clueless about.
  20. I was just referencing the Gilgamesh one. I had no clue about the Caesar one. Thanks all the ladies that included warnings on that one because I really didn't no. It just reminds me to continue to read aloud to him the ones I don't know anything about. Luckily everyone in my family enjoys that. I'm with you.......I don't think I care to read all that stuff myself, let alone has my ds read it. I love the Story of the Greeks and The Story of the Romans, too.
  21. In Gilgamesh the beginning part simply says: 'And so the harlot, Shamhat, showed him her bre*sts, showed him her body. The hairy-bodied man came over to her, and lay down on her, and then she showed him the things a woman knows how to do. For seven days Enkidu in his wonder lay with her in pleasure' I didn't find that offensive and it was pretty easy to explain.
  22. Yeah that was fun to meet someone from the boards.....my first by the way. I have not had any issues with the books as of yet. I read some of the Gilgamesh out loud and I just don't remember anything explicit. I do remember mention of him and the woman being together and I don't remember how they worded it but it was obvious. I just don't remember it being so horrid that I was concerned. Omnibus has a lot of bible books in the beginning and some of those were very explicit and I made sure we had plenty of discussion but I didn't feel reading those things would harm him. We have talked openly over the years about s*x (at age appropriate levels) and so it wasn't a complete shock. **but those bible books really did shock me a bit. I certainly didn't realize there was so much s*x in them. I guess my memory wasn't good enough to remember that. But it isn't what my ds remembers most about the books anyway. One thing I had established many years ago when he began getting ahead of me in what he reads was that if he ever comes across anything that he doesn't understand or is concerned about he should stop reading and come to us to discuss. Almost every time we just need to discuss the specific subject and he can continue to read. There was one book years ago that I told him to just leave and not finish because it was really way off in things we believe in. For me it is important that he knows he can move on to other books and doesn't have to finish reading something that makes you feel icky just because you started the book so you must finish. There are just too many other books to read. I can say I'm a little nervous about 12 Caesars because I didn't realize there is a lot of s*x in it so I may have to read that one aloud and then edit it. But I still plan on including it unless I read it and hate it. Glad I'm not there yet.
  23. We are working our way through the first semester and are focused on the primary books, but we are reading all of the secondary books as well. My ds had already read all of the Narnia books many, many times so we just read the prologue they provided and ran through some of the questions for each of those to make sure he remembered them and to add to his understanding of the stories. My son is 13 and a very advanced reader so he is keeping up pretty well so far. I find I don't have the patience or time to put into each book myself. In the beginning I was reading right along with him, but now I am still catching up so the intro and questions help me out a lot. There is a ton of discussion and questions and so I find that we just pick our way through and don't worry about doing all of them. I don't mind having the discussion, but I will agree it takes a tremendous amount of time that I don't always have, so sometimes we read a few of the required assignments and then plow through a bunch of days questions at once. My son loves to write, but I find that lately he is doing very few actual writings on each book. Mostly we are discussing and moving on. In my opinion it is a ton to read each book as well as cover the other things we are working on, but so far we just keep moving forward. I may just be stubborn but I have a hard time skipping things because I appreciate so much having all these books layed out for me. I like the format the book is in and all the great questions to really help me be able to discuss a lot of these things. I think as we move along I may have him just skim and partially read some of the larger, more boring texts like Herodotus. I think that is the one I've looked at that seems so long. Wow! I sure had a lot to say;) Anything else specific I'll try to help:) **oh, and I have purchased the entire set of books so I have them all either way.
