  1. I don't know if this will be good as a read aloud, but it is Tom Sawyer! http://www.homeschoolfreebie.wholesomechildhood.com/tom-sawyer-in-comics/ Maybe a read together?
  2. AimeeM, let us know if and where you start a different thread for history with older kids. I'm interested to know if by the time the kids have a basis on history that they might want to go in reverse later on.
  3. Blondeviolin and StartingOver, did you make your own divider cards? Or did you buy the ones from made from AAS? http://www.allaboutlearningpress.com/spelling-divider-cards/
  4. For those of you who bought just the box, did make your own divider cards? Is it worth $4.95 to pay for the divider cards, too?
  5. Hi Squiddles, The links in the subsequent posts ended up working. This is the direct link http://www.whythereyouare.com/homeschool/homeschool_abbreviations.htm. Hope that works!
  6. Thanks, everyone, for your responses! I forget that the world can be scary to kids and that an event's being remote can be comforting. I was already hesitant on going backwards, but your insights have sealed the deal to go chronologically.
  7. My daughter is 5yo and in Kindergarten at a public school, but we'll be starting homeschool for 1st grade. I was all set to buy Story of the World Volume 1 when my husband suggested teaching history backwards. He thinks the kids might learn with more enthusiasm if I start with more recent history first because it's more relatable. I would then progress with older and older events/civilizations. I don't mind doing extra work in terms of having to set up lesson plans if it appears that the kids would be more interested in history, but I just feel a little lost in how I would choose what comes next in this anachronological method. I thought that maybe I should do it chronologically during the Grammar stage when I'm just exposing them to history in general. Then when I get to the Logic stage, I might try teaching history in reverse. Has anyone every tried it? Was it successful or not? Help!
  8. I'm in Tampa and late to this discussion! We're about to start our homeschooling journey with 1st grade for our DD in June, and ... I'll say it ... I'm scared! I'm contemplating joining FPEA (Florida Parent Educators Association), and possibly going to their convention. Are you fellow Floridians members and find the membership worthwhile? How beneficial are the conventions? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
  9. Hi aaasjordan! We moved to Tampa from California in July of 2012, and we found a place just outside MacDill. The neighborhood is officially called Port Tampa. While it's not the most suburban and safest of places, we like its more semi-rural setting and its proximity to the base. We're starting our homeschool journey in a few months with 1st Grade for DD, so I don't have lots of experience with groups/coops in South Tampa. One thing I have noticed is that a handful of families do some homeschooling and afterschooling at the YMCA. Good Luck and feel free to private message me with more questions about Tampa!
  10. I can't decipher EE which is being used in a Geography post. From your great list, I saw EA is Exploring America. Is EE maybe Exploring Europe? Thanks for this thread and the compilation of abbreviations! It's so helpful!
