  1. Yes, she is! and she should be called out on it! When you have a kid with a legitimate life threatening issue you need to know the adults will take it seriously. They won't take it seriously if parents lie about it because 'oh my kid just doesn't like x so I say he is allergic", gaahhh ... no just no.
  2. Do not worry about ... "Because I didn't do very much to teach her that Muslims in general really aren't that bad". There is plenty of information out there already she is willfully and happily ignorant and bigoted. She is not interested in learning more, her heart is hardened. I used to think hate filled people could be helped with the truth. They want to keep their hate, they love it and tend it carefully. Explain, loudly or not, to your little people that she is an idiot and to avoid her as they would poison.
  3. We debated watching it because every time there is a 'possible' triple crown it gets hyped up and falls through. ha Ended up watching it and had a good time. yay! triple crown.
  4. There are some simple and fun exercises in "What Color Is My Parachute" (various years). They help you focus on what you enjoy, what skills or talents you have, what kind of atmosphere you like, etc. They won't help with picking a major or a school but they can help with focusing on life expectations and goals.
  5. I saw Wicked in London too. :) Also saw it here at home, love it both times. 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee - is really good and lots of fun. (not pg rated) 1776 - quirky and fun
  6. Re: Kite Runner  That is what some of my friends said. I kept waiting for him to grow up and see beyond himself but he just never did. I think one of the things that made it memorable was my friends saying 'he gets better' and me saying 'no, he really doesn't'. :glare: Still, many many people love that book, so there must be something there.
  7. Usually if I don't like a book I don't feel required to finish it. I am also not going to mention any class assignments because that is the worst way possible to meet a book. :) Worst book: The Kite Runner - I had to finish it because my book club was reading it, other wise I would have set it on fire. I came to despise the main character soooo much. arrrgh - Naturally my book club friends loved it. ha
  8. repelled. I can think of no justification for that... ick Normally I like to ponder the 'other side of the story' but nope.
  9. I'm not sure what your limit is for inexpensive but one of my daughters received a 'laundry kit' cute canvas tote (it folded down into a square) tiny bottles of soap and softener little pouch with $10 worth of quarters thoughtful, useful, and unusual
  10. It was a shock to us. I can only imagine how it feels to my neighbors most of whom are retired and on a fixed income. :(
  11. Sometime last fall our town passed a 10% Public Service tax on electricity. It goes into effect this month. I try to stay up on local politics but this one slipped right by me. :glare: :scared: We are very frugal with power consumption (I just posting in the Air Conditioner game thread), but this will blow my summer budget out of whack. thanks for reading, I just wanted to whine a bit. :)
  12. we play that game. :) Dh and I both try to push it a little more each year. We live in Florida (as my name indicates) and our electric bill can be over $400/month in the summer. yikes we also play the 'how long will this car last?" game and the "How many meals can we get out of one whole chicken?" game. While the cost savings is important (two kids in college/early career), we also enjoy the feeling of self sufficiency and not contributing to the Throw Away/Waste culture. :)
  13. You have received tons of great advice. I plan to look up some of those suggestions myself. Also I second the B12 idea. I have a very small example of something I did that helped me a great deal a few years ago. Your mileage may vary of course. In 2012 I got overly invested in the Presidential Campaign and really really could not stand one particular person. I could recognize that my anger and rage were out of proportion and not good for me. I decided to pray for him but just couldn't so I prayed everyday for his wife. :) I thought about her safety and how she might miss him when he was away etc. It let me step away from the anger and I started praying for them both, eventually my rage faded away and I could resume my usual peaceful compromise political discussions. :) I presume meditation would work much like prayer if that is your preference. I hope you find a process that is a good fit for you. Best wishes.
  14. nope, nope, nope ... can't to do it Dictionaries exist for a reason.
  15. I needed to do more than just 'like' this. :) Yes... I have heard decent people say shocking things since I moved to the south. It is like they don't even hear themselves, and when you point out something they said they just look at you like you are crazy and of course it doesn't mean anything. The implication is always left that I am the one bringing up racism, sexism, etc. therefore I am the problem.
  16. St Louis Art Museum is wonderful, admission was free years ago I don't know if it still is. I second the ARCH and the botanical gardens. We liked the city when we lived there. Congratulations and I hope you have a great trip.
  17. prayers and hugs ... hold your family tight. I am so sorry this is happening to you, I will pray for relief.
  18. awwww why is Clue on there? We loved that game when the girls were younger. :) The rest I have to agree with.
  19. I read the bolded part (bolding mine) and laughed so loud I scared the cat. lol
  20. I will throw out a few :) (btw I do not believe there is anything on Earth that everyone agrees is either good or bad) Interstate Highway system. - including the numbering and signage guidelines that let you navigate the highways anywhere in the country. :) The gas tax user fee system - maintain roads using gas tax, the more someone uses the system the more they pay, the less they use the less they pay. (this has been politiced around lately, sigh) County Extension office system - State Universities as part of there charter (tax/government breaks) run a free low-cost education program in each county. This usually includes pest management, agriculture, etc but they are also the folks who have the equipment to safety inspect pressure cookers. They are a weird little hybrid farm agent / home ec school thing that provides a lot of service at low low cost.
  21. Sorry OP but I have to join the others and say this is not acceptable. Make sure the kids know that you are a safe person, stand up for them and continue to quietly, gently explain to dh that this is not okay. Definitely approach this with him when you two are alone and not in the middle of the behavior. At the very least he risks being the lonely old man who wonders why the kids never visit and do not trust him with the grandkids. I have been at the other end of this kind of toughening up (not a parent thank God). I will never willingly be contact with that person again.
  22. In answer to the previous questions about BSF Bible Study Fellowship is an international non-denominational bible study that focuses on direct study of the Bible texts. The program runs during the school year, each class studies the same material. This year we are studying Life of Moses (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), next year will be Revelations. I have participated for seven years now, studies alternate between Old Testament and New Testament. Each study is 30 to 32 weeks long. Each week class members read a specific section of the Bible, this week is Numbers 13 - 14, and answer a series of questions. The study has a four fold teaching methodology. 1) They are intended to answer the question directly (no commentaries, footnotes, sermon material etc) the idea is to learn to understand the passage on their own. 2) At the weekly class day the class members break into discussion groups led by a leader who facilitates the discussion of the questions, members learn from each other, leader does not teach. 3) After discussion group returns to the main class and the Teaching Leader gives a lecture on the material (usually around 40 minutes), 4) They receive printed notes which contain historical information and commentary along with the questions for the next week. I like the teaching method, my class has a wonderful Teaching Leader. :) Each 'class' has leaders from multiple denominations and the Teaching Leader must be from a different denomination than the host church. Classes are usually between 150 to 300 women. My class has 10 discussion groups with around 15-20 members per group.
  23. The school age children get printed lesson questions much like the adults get (2 pages). I can see them online when I log in to BSF International website. They are copyright restricted so I cannot share a link but I will PM a few sample questions from this week. We are studying Numbers 13 - 14. Next year will be a brand new study of Revelations. You can also go to the website BSFInternational.org and look at the Home Discussion Pages and Home Training Lessons without having a sign in. Hope this helps.
  24. Sorry not a children's leader but I am a BSF Admin leader. Don't know if I can help.
  25. Sad Cat Diary - I laughed so hard I had to keep pausing and going back to hear everything.
