  1. well. I guess looking back we did take a break, of about 10 mo or so. first my child was too young for the K year anyway. now she is 6 ready for 1st grade. we were selling our home. major painting ourselves. then got pregnant, moved, had horrible morning sickness, then was too tired to do school consistently. then now New Born baby. we did bible in the morning breakfast time. then memory work. then we used a 'EPIKARDIA' which is a simple hystory curriculum with lots of books to read, but it is also a full curriculum. w/LA , we did not use it, we were using SWR. SciEnce was included and some grammar, copy work, and geography. read Easop, and little house in the big woods, and the farmer boy (i lost the little house on the prairie) oh, and Math u see Primer. Lots of sign language videos... This Summer my dd asked me to do school again as she is forgetting some school. All that to say, thoug my 'break' was for circumstances I could not change, the break did not lessen my good reader, and she practiced on her own her math and there was always something new they learned everyday. my younger son memorized Psalm 23 and Psalm 100. older daughter also knows them but not as well. we read paddle to the sea. Writing for the oldest is what I was lacking and reading for the younger... you can use the year to see what has been retained and what needs to be reviewed.
  2. nice, any pictures to show? thank you! k
  3. the laws, rules and regulations of every school can not be buldozed by a tantrum, no matter how old the tantrummer is. if you mean to spear the school corporation or the teacher ... don't waiste your breath. they are used to people that think their kid is especial. and they have the final word. when she comes and tells you how terrible this people are, bite your tongue. the school will be the bad guy and your family relations have not suffer. Sounds like she needs aproval, find other ways you can encourage her. try to point out places she does better than you. don't lie. it will be an excellent exercise on loving your baby sis.
  4. I got one but dunno how to download it from the time I log back in the site...
  5. sorry. did not read all responses. short time to be online right now. BUT I just had my 4th child w/out any medication. the 1st I had epidural after 2 nights of drug free laboring in the hospital. by baby was born 2 hr after that. the rest were no meds! I used the Bradley Method basically the class helped me learn to relax every muscle. taught my hubby to see when I am not relaxed and where I need to relax, like I am ckinching my teeth, etc. have your partner place an ice cube somewhere in your body lightly and then pick it up and you learn to relax. when your hubby is asleep look at his breathing. that is what you need to immitate. belly rising and lowering not chest breathing. start w/20 kegels. then work your way up to 100 then practice a kegel closing and then a pushing up. try to do this all the time. SO when the pain comes you treat it as that icecube, then continue in a sleeping position continuing your breathing asleep kind breathing rythm. then the pain increases...you can voice your pain with head to chin if you are sitting. low moaning. that's all I can write for now.
  6. I am seeing a bit of trouble with my child of 6. thoug she can read a book in a day for it must be interesting, she cannot tell me much. so I tell he to draw me a picture. inevitably she draws a few and then I ask what's going on in her pictures so I get my narration. in your case try to ask for 3 or 4 detail well done pictures of his favorite parts. then ask for an explanation of each picture.
  7. sadly I think they even talk about the colors on the DVDs if u have little ones I would buy. maybe a mature highschooler will not get confused
  8. I saw somewhere online something that was being offered for free (curriclick I think) it was a coloring sheet essentially, like the letter A and thick, the whole page, with apples rather thick leaves, etc... It was for 'coloring' with play doh. So maybe you can buy a bunch of mini playdoh colors and use them for coloring the assignments.
  9. I have not looked into that program. I have the others on hand so I would like to choose one
  10. thank you! i own spalding manual, sanseri's full program, and Rigg's institute.... so I am trying to decide what to use. Also I tought my kids the phonograms last year using SWR, my oldest is doing cursive first. Though I have the cards for the Spell road to reading and thinking (imposible program to undestand, terrible customer service, and even worse yahoo group) SWR great Yahoo group, but still hard to follow. after a year at it, finally a friend who organized a seminar at one point, sat me down and at 9 mo and 1 week pregnant, I learned that I did not need to "know" everything, that I just need to read what it is in the red manual and do it.all like a script, you know "this is the ___phonogram" make my hand move (child dictates back, etc.). But if she didn't show me to start in one page, jump to the other book and then to the manual agian, etc I would still not know how to do it. SO I am guessing that it is the same for the Spalding stuff that I have.... I cannot say the sound of Y that LOE wants, nor can I say the sound of the think to spell "i" on the word baby.... I can't hear it.... I don't know what I want... maybe a reasurance to stay with the program I have. I got the LOE book from the library not the curriculum. Will read and see what the back of it has to offer in terms of rules, etc. I want to know who is right, who will teach my children not to be like me a horrible speller! and I hate pecing together a curriculum, so I don't like how you have to buy this and that to undesrtand one curriculum, like the videos and seminars of SWR, or the million books and workbooks, readers, part A, B, C, D, etc of LOE Eide mentiones in her blog that other curricula that uses more or less phonograms is just as good as hers because it is a different aproach on how to codify (or other word like that) the English language in order to make sense of it. SO is it not important how one teaches the students? will all be leveled by grade 3?
  11. I saw some of the Logic of English videos today, free online. and I own one of the latest videos from Wanda Sanseri from Spell to Write and Read. what is the difference? I mistakendly thought that LOE taught the 'schwa' sound with every vowel. I saw in her videos that she said only the 3 sounds of 'a' it sounds that they have the same philosophy, what do you pro's think? I see the similarities clearly like the cursive teaching, the sandpaper monterory letters. no sight words? what are the differences, best if yiu know the core differences.
  12. Signing time! all my littles love it! even the baby signing time!
  13. Forgot to wrire her name Rosalie de Rosset – 2013 Her list is amazing and updated! with titles from: AMERICAN CLASSIC LITERATURE ENGLISH CLASSIC LITERATURE FOREIGN CLASSIC LITERATURE (WORLD LITERATURE) CHRISTIAN CLASSIC FICTION CHRISTIAN CONTEMPORARY LITERARY FICTION (meaning written on Christian themes, some by professing Christians) Some are out of print—can be ordered through used books websites. CLASSIC CHRISTIAN DRAMA and more! here is the direct link to her list http://www.moodyradio.org/uploadedFiles/Broadcasting/Programs/Library/PDF/Midday_Connection/2013/2013%20reading%20list.pdf
  14. www.moodyradio.org/brd_ProgramDetail.aspx?id=107343 there is the program and somewhere on her bio she has a doable reading list
  15. there is an English Lit. Moody Prof. forget her bame she also is interview many times on moody radio. she has a classics list to read. she has been a regular on midday connection. also chuck colson had a must read book and movie list.
  16. Saxon was OK for my siblings in k-2nd but after that specially middle school was terrible. both of them hate Math because of it.
  17. My oldest always complains that younger one is having more fun "doing" school because last year to keep the youngest out of trouble I bought one of those Preschool workbooks from Walgreens. I guess my Kinderone thought that it was more fun than what she was doing. Last year my kinderone did: Cursive first (some, we did it slow...) Epikardia (kinder/1st grade) which included: Bible, History (ancients, though it is a world history in a yr curriculum), Science (she has samples online if you want to see it) Math-u-see Primer SWR Both did the phonograms of SWR, both did calendar, Bible, Aesop, Bible memory, and Science activity together. But when we broke circle time for me to work with kinderone with MUS, or Writing I would give litte one his workbook (couple pages at the time, usually a letter, then coloring activity, or cutting activity) then the older would look longinly and say I wish I were in PreSchool. How do I keep the 4/5 yr old doing level school (happens to be colorful and fun) while 6/7 yr old has to do MUS, SWR, MOH, etc.? They will do SWR drill together, oldest will do dictation, younger will practice writing. We will do Mystery of History together, and whatever reading will be together, BIblie will be together. We will be using 106 days of creation for Science, my hope is to do it together, but required more of the oldest, and youngest may join if wants to. Will try to do some spanish worksheets for both of them I don't know what to do for art. Last year we used a few famous paintings and looked at them and color them like Renoir, VanGogh. Not a formal artist study, Music, the oldest is follwoing an old piano primer. mostly playing by ear. My youngest will do Pathway readers (first steps), for math, I don't know yet, He wants to read so badly! For him I need to know what order of sports I should put him in.... I have no clue! help anyone here (fall?what sport?, etc) my oldest will have extra things like chess, and free reading (this kids loves to read), considering ballet. anyone encounter similar problems? green eye mosnter of jeoulsy I guess. I wanted to make the oldest school a little more fun, any ideas to incorporate "fun" yet not time wasting things to do? I guess it is a little more than me putting the foot down and say, you gotta do your school! I would like for her school experience not to be a constant fight... with her, I even stoped school since she was way ahead, she taught herself to write from similar books that I would get from Dollar store when she was 3. Is it that she is soooo bored with what I am presenting.... we chose MUS as it is worksheetlike, she can color...she loves to draw and color....she can draw quite well. I am wondering if she is doing school well below her capabilities and hence she is so bored. but how do I find that out. I know what I have not taught her, for instance, We didn't finish her Math Primer, do we jump to alpha (the next level in MUS) or finish the book? Many many questions... for this board, though, my main concern is to know if anyone had similar problems when teaching together a preK and a 1st grader.
  18. So here is the green engineering paper atached, then the other attachement is showing the latin paper with red border (faint 0.5 cm squares) compared to Staples Composition graph ruled notebook (dark blue lines) It is a bummer that I can upload only 500KB! hmmm. I don't have another place to put these images.... hopefully you can see them. The last picture does not show well, the gray lined paper is much lighter than the blue lined one...
  19. latin america uses quadrile paper for everything. our paper is just used for correspondance (letters). To all you who print their own. the secret is to print the 'squares' fainted in gray or blue or green. that way they are not a distraction. sometimes using the quadrile notebooks at staples leaves the math looking messy. so if your squaRes are blue, use black and red ink, etc. another solution for filler 'math'paper here in the US is the green engeeniering paper. it is perfect as the lines are faint even for the use with pencil. quadrile still. very helpful. on phone now. but will try to scan all 3 to show later.
  20. higher up and further in another CM free version and I know their lists are free and all seem to have yahoo groups.
