  1. I did Cursive First which has a sample planner on how to teach SWR, which was most helpful. Now they are coming out with lesson plans!!!! I can't wait to get them. I think all the curricula spoken about here needed something like that that was simple and not as expensive as LoE.
  2. I have Riggs, I'm no expert, but Riggs has an extra sound for some phonograms, the French Shwa so for "a" you have 4 sounds.... I cannot make that sound do I went with SWR. But they are the first that I learned about that used clock letters for teaching manuscript, so my kids learn with the clock. However, I needed them to practice, so I made them lined with middle dotted line clock paper, for uppercase, then just a clock for the bottom line for lower case formation. It worked great for Cursive too. I don't have lefties, so I'm not sure if they would help for your lefty but I think practice will help. ðŸ‘🼠Best luck!
  3. I had the same thought, so I made my own clock paper to print, and laminate. Teachers pay Teachers has clock letter handwriting worksheets here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Handwriting-Clock-Letter-Spalding-Paper-3289330# It's a printable bundle great for practicing, I'll try to upload a sample. ETA: my phone's picture us too large for the forum....
  4. wish it were true! I have a few degerees and....sigh.... still count with my fingers, and one of my degrees is in Science, so I have needed the practice..... I wish I had memorized my addition and substraction, but I never really did, nor did my multiplication's table... It is very true that when I am calm I can do it, but when I am in front of somebody I do use my fingers. =0(
  5. If you define the term "christian" as one that has accepted Jesus as the payment for our sin. Then only Christians go to heaven. Have you heard that Muslims having dreams about Jesus? so, in our intelect we can call them muslims, but we don't know that they have seen Jesus in their dreams and that they have accepted Him. So God is the only one that can see hearts, Remember how Jesus said that the pharises were white washed tombs, that they followed the law but had not a heart for God. SO, we ought to be caraful of judging people to "BE" christians just because of what they do looks christian.
  6. The FBI, and the military have also come to talk to military families. Have asked them to remove "I heart army" and other military related items from their cars, has been suggested not to wear military shirts or stuff around towns, and take away anyhing that would make you a target for being in the military. About Peter, he was openly rebuked by the leader of Christianity, and the ear pas properly re-placed and healed. Christians are not perfect, Christianity does not follow Peter, Christians follow Jesus or they should. Your irritation at the religion calling is granted. The press is bent to get ratings and hits by making the connection. Alarmist sells. It is a good time to make cupcakes and take them to your neighboor, wheather you are a christian or a muslim mum. and talk with eachother and let each other know that you care for them. k
  7. I'd add rice to every meal! make at least 3 cups of dry rice per day, and boil a potato for each day. If not for the kids (dunno of Glutten in rice) you guys can have more rice. Lentils, cook with sausage links or hot dogs, add your favorite spices, slat, cumin, pepper. add half the onion, serve over rice and potatoes. At the end of the days, you can have leftovers soup
  8. OK. so I went to google and searched "celebrities a-z" the very first link has a list of them by picture and name, etc. also it has the capability to search by name. So I clicked the "a" many people I dind't know existed are there. so I put their name on our search box and try to find them. while scrolling to the thread that has that specific, likely written mentioned, topic I found a BOOK COVER, is that something we ought to report??? If so, there is no button on the post to 'report' here is the link to the whole post, number 34 has the picture of the book. If the lady/gent reading this is owner of the thread, please don't be angry at me, I am just asking if that is something I should look.... http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/525351-book-a-week-in-2014-bw34/?hl=%2Blanger&do=findComment&comment=5866214 sorry for all this, I can't sleep, so here I am k My avatar is my cake.
  9. DId any one mentioned Facebook? just type sale, garage sale, buy/sell/trade, kidszone, etc, then your town name (also write your state or check it is in your state) That is where you can find deals.
  10. I was taught using "El silabario" I attended school abroad, so I learned Spanish that way. BUT Spanish has only one sound per vowel, till they teach you the diphtonges, then they teach you "ortografia" However, a silaba in Spanish cannot be divided the way we do in English, Plant-ed in Spanish it should be: Plan- ted I didn't know, other than Rod & Staff, any other English curricula that did that. So does the WTM suggest a method vs another? I can see how to practice Cursive by practicing el silabario, haven't said that word in decades!
  11. I was wondering for those that use classical education and use any of the Orton/Spalding Spelling programs. I find myself learning more about Grammar Stage, and how easier is memorization for young children, and how logic, and a more analytical approach is best employed in 5th grade or so, depending on the child. Then I come to ask the wisdom from all of you that have used Spalding methods of spelling and agree with the classical aproach, I have used SWR and have read most of the other ones. Is the marking of the words a form of analylsis of the word, it is to me almost like a diagraming of the word. Am I asking too much from my K-2nd graders to do? Should they memorize the marking instead of being asked to analyze and mark? I wonder how many of you have used SWR/or other in a Classical way. Has anyone twicked these programs to better fit the grammar stage, with what results? I don't think I can compare a classical spelling program, like the ones sold at Memoria press, or other, as their aproach is different, teaching the long or short vowel sounds, instead of all the phonograms first. I ask because I am having a hard time with my children enduring markings, and they are little and really not understanding, they are K and 2nd. Could it be that their brains are not up to par? Belive me I have gone throught the guilt of thinking is just me, that I am not a good teacher. So far they can handle the phonograms, some of the rules, We have the SWR app. They are great readers! they have learned how to read with this program, now the spelling... my K is slow, my 2nd grader can spell great, I think is all the reading she does. back to the issue; grammar stage vs Orton methods. I would love to hear from both sides. and specially those that have noted something like what I say. I cannot go buy something different right now, so I have to make work what i have. How does that look for all you SWR/Spalding users? to mark or not to mark for grammar stage, that is one of my questions, k
  12. so Nicole Cull's list has all the lists or just after M?
  13. assuming that you have already downloaded the template. The difference is that you are going to list it by work experience and volunteer work rather than educational. If you have a Bachelors on something write it down under the education section Under the Experience section the first entrance has to read something as Private Educator or Private Home School Educator explain for what ages then write the year you started like 1998 - present then what other jobs you have finished recently XYZ Home School Cooperative Instructor for High School English and Literature 2013-2014 XYZ Home School Cooperative Instructor for Elementary Science 2012-2013 XYZ Home School Cooperative Instructor for High School English and Literature 2013-2014 fix your year accordingly XYZ Home School Cooperative Instructor for High School English and Literature 2013-2014 XYZ Home School Cooperative Instructor for High School English and Literature 2013-2014 Then the occasional volunteer job Church church of your city Sunday School Coordinator 2008-present etc. BASICALLY the idea is to make every year after your degree..... to show that you have done something with it. don't forget to add that your are proficient with Word, Exel, Power Point and any other programs you know.
  14. We have a group of 10 kids K-4th grade, just one 4th couple 2nd and mostly Ks. my K grader was playing with his blue light this week and showing me that the window does some of the same of the mirror of the experiment of the coop. so they are getting it. We just have to read ahead. We only have 16 weeks to meet, so we are trying to get a couple experiments per each creation day. each semester. About the original poster question. I have the book and we will do it next year. It is easier when you separate by either gender or grade, if you have the luxury of a helper in your class, make the differentiation. it will help. specially with that age group. I am not like my hubby, a great! teacher with little kids (and all ages) but when I go over how to deliver the lesson, rather than just reading the text that helps. too.
  15. I think the gage needs to be would he grow and be better if you push his writing, or will he grow and be better if you take that away and let him flourish later in the writting science area. YOu know his character and what he needs.
  16. what is it? Some people are calling it classic education. anyone know what this is about? I am reading the website, kind of wondering how come I had not heard of them before. thank you
  17. I am a teacher at a Science Co-op. I've had a student that was not up to doing the amount of writing required in Bioloby apologia. So he photocopied and I think shrunk a little, and pasted the Experiment. He just wrote in class the changes of the procedure and his observations in class. His homework was to finish the conclusions at home. That helped him a lot.
  18. We are enjoying Science in the Beginning by Jay Wile, really hands on....
  19. Not for the same university, but one of my students of our CoOp just added my syllabus that mentioned the labs we were going to do along with detail way to write a laboratory notebook. then they checked her lab notebook and accepted it.
  20. Technicly everything you do can be written up in a lab notebook. Including demos. Follow this format in a composition notebook, it is simple. Title: xyz demonstrations Objective: show the audience surprizing results with demonstrations while showing basic chemistry. Materials: In this part you make a table of all that you are going to use and how much Item ammount needed safety note experimental acctual ammounts vinegar 20 gr do not ingest, it hurts belly 10 g of vinegar used in demo Procedure: taken from chemistry 101 by Mr Sci page 20 part B only. for volcano demo:set up vinager add baking soda for coke and mints demo:put down tarp set up the soda add the mint throu a straw Observations: Demo 1 write what happened in each experiment/demo, note the color, smell, how big the mess was etc Demo 2 same Graphs/diagrams/pictures: :auto: a pie chart/ or something like that too. Calculations we had to double the recipe or half it so: 20g/2=10g Conclusions: talk about each demo, reactions of people, what you would have done different, why it didn't work as well, etc
  21. yeah, no body told ya' you had to have a Theology degree! and questions pop as you least expect it! Good thing to say is I don't k now we can ask daddy, or ask pastor or look it up in the bible. that will buy you some time... but it will also make you cement what you believe. If she's having nightmares, then make sure to tell her that the enemy of God is much lesser than God, since it has been made by God. It's power comes from what we give it when we believe in its lies, like believing that God and the enemy satan are the same power which makes us afraid (young and old). I thnk that is one of the major notions in littles minds. Then relate that bible verse that says in 1 John 4:4 Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world.
  22. I searched for EDMODO here and nothing came up! I had to google welltrainedmind and edmodo, and this thread came up. I am wondering if people have used it, specially their app Mobymax a good tool for practicing math or for placement testing each child for free. anyone using it?
  23. Having reviewed many Science books for public schools, I would advice againt them. If you can do APOLOGIA or Master BOOKs that would be better, or even ABEKA. That would be great, as the other books, seculars, cannot help themselves. It looks like they have to proove their pholosophy on every page. To the point of photoshoping (unnecessarily) some pictures, as I vividly recall a recent review of a Prantice Hall. Now if you have older science texts, that would be better, but then the Science will be old. It is nice to get the pure Science and you get that from the Apologia books. The Science and Math is not compromized due to view point. hope that helps.
  24. just to get out try American Heritage Girls or Trail Life for boys. They are not as expensive and can be a nice change to the homeschool week.
