  1. Actually, it would have worked great in my house even when the kids were young-as long as I stayed away from it
  2. does anyone have this & do you enjoy it? What are the recipes like?
  3. Wow-no wonder writer has third in line after stand up comic and actress in her tag.
  4. If DD walks into Panera, she will become nauseous and start have stomach pains. Along these line, she took a couple of classes each semester of her senior year of high school at a private college nearby. Between classes she would study in their small 1 story study union. That year she became very nauseous & had a great deal of pain by the time I picked her up on her days she was at the college. It took us a few weeks to figure out that the symptoms were caused by the gluten in the air from the Subway restaurant there. The Dr. confirmed that yes that was probably causing it. Just remember everyone's reactions will be different.
  5. Also want to add, that it's very important to find a pharmacist who is willing to work with you to be sure your meds are gf. I have two pharmacist(one at home and one in the city DD goes to college) who are aware of the CD and go out of their way to contact companies to very the med is gf. It's take us time to put a medical team around her who we are very comfortable with. Her internist is actually celiac and her gastroenterologist & surgeron have been on top of her various medical issues.
  6. My youngest DD who is now 20 was diagnosed With Celiac disease four years ago. She tested positive with a blood test then she had a biopsy which showed that her villi were almost completely destroyed. She had another biopsy last year showing that they were regenerating but slowly. It will probably be another couple of years before she has fully healed because the damage was so extensive. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease which means the body attacks and destroys itself, in this case the villi, in the presence of gluten. So, yes, while you may not feel it, that one little bit does damage. She also had to have her gall bladder out this summer because it wasn't functioning. Who knows if the celiac caused or was a factor. The good news is that there is so much more information available now. The bad news-so many people don't understand it or treat gluten free as the hot new diet. She's in college now which presents a whole new range of issues. She has found which dining court is safest to eat in and which staff members are knowledgable about it. When she's eating out, she carefully asks waitstaff (and if they don't know asks for a manager) what is in the food and how it is prepared. If they aren't aware she goes to a safer item life salad. If she does a salad, she clearly says she has an autoimmune disease and must not have any croutons on the salad. She became very ill one time because when she sent the salad back that had croutons on it apparently they just took the croutons off and sent it back to her. In her case, just having the croutons on the salad left enough gluten to make her very ill. Also, in her case, she is not able to even walk into a Panera Bread because of the gluten saturation in the air (which is ironic because my DH is a Panera GM). She does use GF foundation, eye makeup, cleansers but we've been told by dr. that it's not necessary because it isn't ingested. The same with shampoos, conditioners, bodywashes, etc. However, gf lipstick is important because it is ingested. . As I mentioned before, my DH is a Panera GM and he is constantly asked if they have anything gf. His response is that there are a few items, however, everything in the cafe would be cross contaminated because of the environment. More companies are developing gf products, However, you must be aware of the cross contamination factor. One company I checked with (I think it could of been the producer of Rice Krispies) said that not only is it produced on a separate line but in a separate building because of that factor. All that being said, (and if you're still reading in spite of me being carried away) it's very manageable. There is a learning curve involved with preparing food but it gets easier as you go along. And, as I said before, there is a lot more information out there. The first Saturday in October I'm attending the Gluten Free Expo in Carmel, Indiana. Last year I attended one of the workshops with Dr. Alessio Fasono from the Center for Celiac Research. He's the most well known researcher/expert on Celiac. Plus I took home a HUGE bag of new items for her to try and lots of coupons. I've posted previously on celiac if you're interested in pulling up past posts. Please if there is anything I can answer or any help I can give feel free to shoot me a private e-m. *And, if you're looking for recipes, I have several awesome ones *We've found it easier to just go gf as a family at home which makes meal prep so much easier. The rest of us save our gluten cheats for when we're out..
  7. Update Here's the answer I received from P today re: my feed: We're always trying out new things behind the scenes at Pinterest and it sounds like you're a part of something new we're testing out. Unfortunately I don't have a way to remove you from this. My best recommendation to make this message go away is to follow some pinners. So, I'm going to follow a couple of friends that rarely pin.
  8. Actually, it's going to a friends' mom in Texas. It is a pretty piece. I love it, but I'm too practical. I mean-what do you actually DO with it??? Things would always be lost in all those little drawers! I prefer functional furniture,
  9. looking at new winter robes-the nice keep you super warm when it's 0 out-kinda' robes. If you've tried both, which do you prefer. Hubs has Reynauds so it's very important to keep his core warm. Also, can you suggest some type of light weight long underwear he can wear under dockers & casual dress shirts to work?
  10. a library card catalog from Indiana to Texas? I can't get the picture to copy but it's the traditional with 9 x 10 rows of the little drawers and abt 5 feet tall. Has anyone shipped anything that size? Looking for places I can drop it off & they'll pack it and ship. So, who have you used that you were happy with?
  11. Since this started after I unfollowed everyone, I sent a friend a friend request so I can follow her boards. I'm wondering if it won't show anything I've pinned on my feed because I'm not following anyone. I just pinned a couple of things onto my boards but they don't show on the feed. At this point, I just want to figure out why it's doing what it's doing (and if I can get it back to the way it was)!
  12. I've been on and pinning since last year so this change is new to my account. Formally, my feed (when I would first log on) was filled with pins I had pinned to my boards from others off the various topic pages i.e. DIY. Now it wants me to pick boards to follow so that every time someone pins something onto their board it will show up on my feed. This will totally clog up my feed. Because it previously showed only what I'd pinned, it kept me motivated to complete projects.
  13. Sorry... I meant the feed that comes up when you log on. The feed formally showed pins that others had posted and I had pinned onto my boards. Now, instead it shows this: (with random pins under it) Welcome home, Susann. It's super easy to fill this space with pins you love. Fill Your Feed Just want to browse? Here are pins from all over Pinterest.
  14. I do a lot of projects off of my pins and it keeps me motivated to see them when I log on. Just to clarify-by "my pins" I mean items that others have posted and I've pinned onto my boards.
  15. Now for my next Pinterest question-I've unfollowed everyone at this point (I think). I'm not sure because now instead of my homefeed I have a page that says,'Welcome home, Susann....It's super easy to fill this space with pins you love........Fill up your feed" with random pins under it. How do I get my homepage back? I don't want it filled up with other people's pins just mine.
  16. I had done that but they kept showing up. Turns out on two people I had to refollow-count to ten-then unfollow again before they were actually unfollowed. Also on one other person that I had unfollowed but was still showing up, I found that one of her boards didn't unfollow when I hit unfollow all. Now, isn't that confusing!!
  17. Anyone else having problems with their homefeed being clogged w/people they aren't following? Seems like it just started in the last week or two. I have one pinner who has pinned prob 50 pins tonight! I read all the instructions but guess I'm missing something because she keeps showing up. I only have one person I want to follow and thought I had unfollowed everyone else but apparently not. So-talk to me like a three year old-and tell me how to unfollow. OK, maybe not a three year old but a ninety year old-the 3 year old could prob do it all my their self
  18. We always invited non homeschooling friends along when possible. Price aside it allowed several of the kiddos to see that there were a ton of homeschoolers around-not just my kids- and that they were smart, a lot of fun and got to do cool stuff.
  19. Zucchini Pie-YUM!!!! Not the main dish type but the dessert type. Kinda' like sugar cream pie. I think this is the recipe I used last year: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/zucchini-pie-i/
  20. Wow, you guys, what wonderful ideas! Now I'm off the play with your ideas-thanks!!!!
  21. With the last dd a junior in college, my df & her dh bought a new camper. I'd like to get them a small gift for it. Any ideas? It's the kind that you pull behind a truck and is really nice-if that makes any difference.
  22. The only that works for me is to keep my carbs under 20/day. I lost 60lbs several years ago and was able to easily maintain until my youngest dd became very ill. She's doing much better now so I started monitoring carbs again a few months ago and have lost 45lbs so far. Cutting calories doesn't work for me just carbs.
