  1. It has a very good reputation locally. Most people I know who went there are very good people.
  2. We've had plenty of coverage of the victims here in Austin. But maybe not as much detail. But it doesn't matter, does it? Anyone could be a victim of senseless killings. People want to know about the perpetrator. We, as a society, have this need to know all about him because then maybe we can find a pattern and stop it the next time. It's not the victims who caused this. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  3. This is a very innocent group of kids and adults. It's not militaristic. Think of a bunch of teenagers going to a local park with pool noodles playing war. I do not think it's right to suspect, much less conclude, that he was mentally ill. There is zero evidence for that as of yet. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  4. The homeschool community is pretty close in this area. We stick together and stick up for each other. While I didn't have personal interaction with this family, I have had personal interaction with other families who did. This family did not have a reputation for being "out there" or "overly religious" or anything else. We all probably know some irl homeschoolers who we might think, "That's the family I would pick to end up on the news." This family was not like that. I am sure things might come out, but I don't like hearing people make assumptions about them. They aren't isolated either. Their kids are in sports and activities. They go to community college. Just like most of us.
  5. My kids know his sister. They are really freaked. I'm freaked. What in the world? They were just like all the other families that we hang out with. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  6. Thank you. I wonder how much he missed skipping some of those honors lessons.
  7. Alg 2 or Trig or PreCal? Anyone? My son, a junior, was told by his ACT tutor that he should have covered these in Algebra, but we use MUS and they were not taught there or in PreCal so far. I see that functions are taught in MUS PreCal, but he hasn't gotten there yet. No mention of matrices. I'm wondering if we need to be farther along in MUS before standardized testing for my upcoming students or if I need to use something else for math. I am also wondering what else he's missing.
  8. I heard about it this morning from my husband who is with the fire department. He said 2 people have died and told us not to go near unexpected packages. What a crazy world we live in. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  9. Wanted to address this again. That wasn't the total reason for picking this school. She had chosen a better school Oct of her senior year. But then she kept changing her mind about what she wanted. She was very emotional, stressed, anxious, etc about deciding what she wanted to do. She had actually settled on working full time and auditioning for local theater and movie parts. I wanted her to do beauty school since it would be an actual skill and she could work in the industry making better money than waitressing while she tried to break into the acting world. Acting is what she would like to do full-time. She decided Aug. 1 that she wanted to go to beauty school because this friend was going. I supported it because I thought she had a better chance of getting through it with a friend. Especially considering her mental state at that point. She feels like she was at that school for a purpose. Her relationship with the friend hasn't proven to be super supportive. She's been more of a support for the friend, than the friend for her. But she's done all she can for her at this point. She learned a lot about herself and how to work hard through some serious stuff. She's extending her time in school by about 4 months and it's costing her an extra $3500 compared to if she had gone to this school in the first place.
  10. We've made a choice. It's a commute and a lot more money, but I think it's going to be really good.
  11. I count sports that would be offered as athletics in high school. I wouldn't be paying for them in public school. These include regular season volleyball, basketball, football, baseball and softball for my high schoolers. I don't count sports that would be extra anyway, like club volleyball or martial arts. If you are comparing costs of public school versus homeschool, sports are a very real consideration for kids who want them. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  12. 11th and 12th grades for one son have been the cheapest here because of dual enrollment. This year I've spent about $120 renting books for 5 classes. And $120 in math curriculum at home. That's it. I spent more for his high school football and baseball programs. About $600 each. 9th and 10th are definitely more expensive because of outsourced classes. At least 2 each year, around $450-700 each. These are mostly local, in-person classes. Last year he was taking 2 Landry classes when it got shut down and I don't think we'll ever do another online class. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  13. Thanks. We withdrew her today. Got half our tuition back. Found a school that will take all of her hours. But we're checking out some others too. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  14. This is the plan. She's taking a leave of absence tomorrow and we are going to research all options. She's got 700 of the 1500 hours already. According to the school's catalog, she can get a 50% refund if she has 50% or less of her hours completed. So we've got to decide in the next week. Or we'll lose thousands. We paid up front and I'm worried they won't give it back. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  15. I can't find one. I think they fall under whatever entity governs Texas higher education. And they take federal grant money. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  16. I don't know if anyone here would be able to help me, but I don't know what to do. Dd18 is at beauty school. We picked the one closest to us because it was cheap and she had a friend going there. It is a horrible school. She's been there since Sept and she's had multiple issues. It's not her. She loves cutting hair and wants to learn. The teachers seem so hostile, like they hate their jobs. They get angry at the students for every little thing and then refuse to teach their classes. They threaten to send student home if they even think for one second the student might be acting rudely. One teacher had dd in tears for weeks when her dad stepped in and talked to the owner. The owner suggested she could switch schools! No accountability for how the teacher was behaving. Now she's got another teacher who is better, but I still feel like she's being held hostage to her emotional whims. They also refuse to spend money on things they need to do their job, like new color or equipment. We paid up front for this school. We could maybe get a refund. But it would cost us another 16,000 for her to go to a different school. And she'd lose 190 hours. She's got 690 and needs 1500 to graduate. I want to report this school to come higher education board, but I don't know if it'll do any good. I'd love to take legal action against them or get them shut down because they really are that bad. If they get shut down, dd could transfer schools without losing hours. I know that's unrealistic, but she's got at least through summer to finish. And this school is making her hate the beauty industry. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  17. Saw Game Night on Friday. I totally agree with your review. I was kind of worried it would be really vulgar based on some online reviews, but it wasn't. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  18. You know, I have 5 kids and he's the youngest. I know what you are saying. My oldest graduated last year! I also know that I've been doing this so long, doing the same things, and I don't hang out with a homeschool support group or research curricula to the same extent as I did ten years ago. It's so easy to get into a rut. I'm very glad for all the suggestions. At least 2 things that I've never heard of before! Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  19. I'm thinking I'll go back and work through the enrichment pages. We're behind in those by about 8 weeks. That'll give us review, but in a different format that uses lots of application. Then I'll see where we are. I have been trying to play Pizza Fractions every week, which I think is a good game, but maybe we need to play more often to see a benefit. 20. We are doing MUS Epsilon. It teaches everything to do with fractions. My son is just not getting it. He tries to cross multiply for multiplication. He cannot remember how to do the steps for division, either the long way or the short way. He doesn't remember to reduce. He will cross multiply even when denominators are the same. He doesn't understand putting a 1 in the denominator of a whole number to make it a fraction. He doesn't understand 3/3 = 1 or 3/1 = 3. He doesn't seem to get that the fraction bar means divided by. It's like he's in some kind of fog and just works on auto pilot even if it isn't the best. He cannot explain to me what he is doing or why. I'm wondering if we need to take a break for a couple of weeks and do something else. This is getting beyond frustrating for both of us. I have been explaining some of these concepts every single week for months. Any advice?
  21. My husband started firefighting as a second career. He researched the most well paid and safest city in the state of TX and applied there. He had to apply twice. It's crazy competitive. He cannot leave and go elsewhere or he would have to start over. He does not need a second job but could have one. Major city departments have their own fire academies that you attend once hired. Smaller cities pull from general fire academies or fire science graduates. You have to be prepared to put down roots! You can't just go work for another big city department. Research safety! Dh has been to two funerals for firefighters in two other cities who did not have the same safety practices as his department. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  22. Dipping my toes in here. What a great thread! I took ds10 to see Jumanji today. It was really funny in parts! Our theater wasn't crowded, but we are all laughing loudly at several scenes. I had to look away two times for a few seconds but ds was fine. Lol Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  23. I vote MUS as well. My kids, math haters and math lovers alike, have done really well with it. It's better to enjoy math and understand the basics really well. You can always add in tricky problems later. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  24. We've said no to our dd. But I'm rethinking...it's meaningful, crazy small, and not really that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. We'd get a lot of cool parent points if we helped her navigate this. She could do it and pay for it on her own anyway. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
  25. We bought both and ended up with the Google home. It doesn't have the "listen in" feature and we keep one in our bedroom so that was important to us! It does have a "broadcast" feature that works like a delayed intercom. "Hey Google, broadcast 'Go to bed'" and my kids in the living room hear a recording of my saying "go to bed". They can broadcast back an answer. Google works with spotify music and something else. But not anything Amazon. That's a downside. It answered questions way better than Alexa. And we're banking on it being able to get as good as Alexa eventually at other stuff. It is Google after all. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
