  1. I would not say a normal girl but def a normal science girl. I have always loved science and nothing really bothers me (except the sound of bones breaking that makes me a teeny bit icky). I was really into genetics growing up so I had a mouse farm and a notebook. I would breed them to see if I could figure out the color of the litter. This one time I had a mother that turned on her own litter and injured them badly. I had to give one of them stiches and he was super tiny. I put his little muscles in place in then sewed him back up and he lived! My dads face was priceless though :). Just make sure to explain to her the dangers of pathogens and proper surgical procedure. Sounds stupid but she needs to understand that everytime she splits something open she is exposing herself to unknown diseases :).

ps I did this on my phone so sorry if there are spelling errors.

  2. Hello Hive mind I would love to get some answers to my questions because this is truly nagging me. I have decided with my mom that I would like to go back to PS this Jan and was wondering if anybody has had any exprience with doing such a thing? I have will have taken 12 credicts with keystone by Jan plus my 10 other homeschooled credits. I have taken the PSAT, 3 AP Exams and kept 1 AP Score a 4 and will be taking the SAT in Dec which I think I will get 2000-2200 without studying for it( I will thats just my raw score :D). I might also be taking the ACT in Dec. These are how my credits are distributed.

Now the reason I homeschooled my 11th grade courses is because keystone does not allow you to pay for half and AP Course so I would have had to pay 700 dollars per course when I was only going to use 300 dollars worth. I did not have time to get my AP Course syllabus approved my college board but I am following the syllabus posted by florida schools and I have kept insanely detailed records of EVERYTHING including keystone work. I have binders with every scarp of paper I have used for my 11 th grade studies and I am well versed in everything except maybe some history dates but I am better at understanding trends so I have trouble with dates. The district I will be returning to was the last one I attended and during my time there I was in the gifted program. The one were they test your IQ. My question is how easy do you think this transition will be I am very very nervous to do this and dont want anything to go wrong.

I AM TYPING THIS ON MY PHONE SO PLEASE EXCUSE MISTAKES :)

  3. Be happy you caught it my friend went down that road and let's just say 5 yrs later life still doesn't look that great. My mother used to buy me the most beautiful journals when I was younger and I never wrote on them. Why? Well I found writing down something to be just as in the open as saying it so I never wrote anything. One time I wrote down a lie out of curiosity my little sister read it and then repeated it at the dinner table. I never wrote anything of mention down again. If your daughter did have any sense of peace and comfort in this journal you have shattered it. So don't be to surprised if she is viscous and angry at you and stays that way for a long time. Don't expect her to be thankful for what you have done for her. The question she will ask you is what of you hadn't found anything in my journal ?

Ps I'm not attacking I'm just telling you as a teen and as a person with a friend who cuts what's going to be going through her head.

  4. Oh wow just reading this made be break out in the nervous little laugh with a hint of crazy. I am going into my junior classes in Nov and taking the PSAT in 9 days and the SAT in Dec. I feel like I am going to burst into tears at the drop of a hat. If he is anything like me there is NOTHING you can say to him to make him feel less stressed. Just sit back hope he doesn't have a stroke and then you'll get your son back. Good luck!

  5. Hello Hive I need your help for a quick issue regarding bedtime. My sister is 10 and currently goes to bed at varying times some days 10 some days 12 the thing is she takes a while to fall asleep ... a long while. Which means she gets up late around 9-10 in the morning. The last few nights I have had her wind down and be in bed knitting or reading by 7 and she is asleep by 8 and she gets up at 5:30 -6:00 no problem and spends the entire day bursting with energy and super happy . My question is do you think that is to early just was curious to see what others thought :).

Also a note I am 16 and have always been a person who lays in bed for hours and usually does not fall asleep till 12 or later because I just can not fall asleep. Lately though I have been falling asleep around the same time as my sis 8:30-9:00 and am up at 5:30-6:00 super duper awake but this only happens if I am in bed by 7:30 which is quite lame compared to my peers so I am curious what do you believe is a good bedtime for children?

  6. INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup butter (no substitutes), softened

    1-1/2 cups sugar

    3 eggs

2 tablespoons and 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice

1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon peel

    1/2 teaspoon lemon extract

    1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

    1/4 teaspoon baking soda

    1/8 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup and 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt

    DIRECTIONS:

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F and spray mini bundt pans with non-stick spray.

    2. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in lemon juice, peel and extract.

    3. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; add to the creamed mixture alternately with the Greek yogurt. Beat just until combined.

    4. Pour into a greased pans. Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to a wire rack to cool completely.

    Lemon Curd

    Ingredients

    3 lemons

    1 1/2 cups sugar

1/4 pound unsalted butter, room temperature

    4 extra-large eggs

1/2 cup lemon juice (3 to 4 lemons)

    1/8 teaspoon kosher salt

    Directions

Using a carrot peeler, remove the zest of 3 lemons, being careful to avoid the white pith. Put the zest in a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Add the sugar and pulse until the zest is very finely minced into the sugar.

Cream the butter and beat in the sugar and lemon mixture. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, and then add the lemon juice and salt. Mix until combined.

Pour the mixture into a 2 quart saucepan and cook over low heat until thickened (about 10 minutes), stirring constantly. The lemon curd will thicken at about 170 degrees F, or just below simmer. Remove from the heat and cool or refrigerate.

Make the cakes hollow out the centers and fill it with this lemon curd and top with whip cream (home made) to die for!

  7. I am 16 now and although boys are interesting I have simply agreed with myself that college is when I will hit the dating scene. Its not due to religious reasons or purity reasons but its always been my thing that if a boy still needs his mommy to pack his lunch and get him up in the morning then what on earth should he be doing dating. I went to a school that by 8th grade graduation everyone had already kissed and a good majority had done a hell of a lot more. My mother never restricted me and said I could not date in fact she would have let me date but she explained to me risks and issues that I could face dating boys that young. She did not have to tell me though I watched it play out. Girls in 8th grade taking pregnancy test in the locker room bathrooms. :( I felt so bad for them. So even though it kinda stinks to be one of my only friends who has not done anything I get to watch my friends go through a lot of heart ache and make a lot of stupid mistakes.

  8. I think its possible with some help. I taught myself to knit from a library book in the 3rd grade and was able to knit a small swatch but with no one to help me unravel mistakes or decipher knitting patterns I eventually gave up. Now I picked it up again this summer and have knitted quite a few projects since then and am currently working on a cabled scarf pattern.

  9. What an interesting idea, Jean!

Brandigirl, thank you for your thoughtful comments and great information -- it's so helpful to have an intelligent teen's point of view on a topic like this.

BTW, I just checked out the first few posts in your blog, and I love your dolphin drawing!

Thank You! I might start posting some more drawings but I am always nervous that they aren't good enough.

  10. This year I was thinking that I wanted to have dd10 blog her history and science narrations/reports. I have some questions. She is motivated by doing things with a purpose - I figured that sharing her findings in a blog would be purposeful.

    1. What is the easiest way to set something like this up? I don't want to be bogged down with the details of set-up though an hour or two to get things started is ok.

I like Blogger and thats what my blog is on. It took about 7 min to set up for me and then I work on it every now and then :).

    2. Is it something she can add to on her own? I will review it with her but don't want to be holding her hand the whole time.

Yes Blogger is so easy to work with which is why I usually tell people to use it. You can also put a word filter on blogger for personal prefrence.

    3. If we could easily add a picture of a project that would be nice.

Pictures are a breeze on blogger just click upload and you are good to go.

    4. Privacy? Is there a way to share it with only a couple of friends and family?

Yes there is you would just his the private option and then add a password. I keep mine public but put a filter on the comment section so that nothing bad makes it through.

    5. Is this a good idea or can you think of something else that would meet my purpose better?

I am a teen not a mother so my opnion may be biased but I get nervous with the internet. My sister is 10 and right now I may be able to get my mom to let her have a blog but would not like it. I just think there are some real sick individuals that I don't want my little sis exposed to. She is a very nice person and always wants to trust people and loves making friends which is good but not really good for an internet thing:glare:

    6. Can you either tell me or tell me where to find instructions for doing this that are easy enough for me to follow? Our resident computer geek says that he knows nothing of blogs. I'm trying to keep him on task for his high school stuff so I don't want to pull him to work on this if I can help it.

Blogger takes 5 seconds and you dont even need instructions. Tell the computer geek to help mom out
