  1. I read a post on here a few nights ago about the a lab kit from The Home Scientist to go with ck-12 chemistry. I have searched and searched but cannot find it again. I thought the post said which kit to purchase the basic or honors???
  2. A friend found this at a curriculum fair. I really want to use a secular text this year, but there just aren't that many reviews online about this. We need a good solid chemistry text, but not AP.
  3. His main weekness is in formulating a good thesis sentence and then writing the essay. We tried the Elegant Essay last year but it didn't really fit. We love WWS but it does not focus on essay and research writing skills. He is strong in summarizing and outlining. I just need to find something to map it out to bring it all together. I have thought about an online writing class but have not found one yet.
  4. I have tried several writing programs with my 10th grade son over the years, Writeshop, Rod & Staff, Writing with Skill and now Jensens. None of them have produced results. I would like to try IEW but didn't know where to start since he is in 10th grade. Any suggestions??
  5. I should have mentioned that online classes are not really a possibility, he doesn't really like sitting at the computer that much. Although we did watch some free videos of Virtual Latin today and he liked them. They were short and interesting. He is motivated and interested in learning Latin so at least I don't have to worry about that .
  6. After a lot of debate my ds 15 and I have decided to do Latin instead of French for his high school foreign language. The local high schools offer it so it is a good alternative. He has some background in Greek/Latin roots but not any real Latin Study. What would you recommend for a first time Latin course for him? Memoria Press website says he can start with units 1-5 in Henle I. I just don't want to overwhelm him.
  7. I was very skeptical of using Apologia for high school. But I finally took time to really check out the text and I compared it with my college biology book, as ChandlerMom said, and I found it just as challenging and detailed. I don't feel my son missed out on anything. He did learn enough about creationism to hold his own in a debate or discussion about his belief in evolution. I believe it is important to know both sides of an issue, especially one such as this. For the module, I believe #9 that is all about creationism, I added my college text chapter on evolution to balance it. Plus, I have to agree Apologia is very user friendly. The only thing I changed was I created my own study guides.
  8. We are a secular household, but due to budget issues I choose to use Apologia Biology this year. I have a back ground in Bio science and find it decent. Yes, there is quite a bit of faith and creationist views, but it is a good solid program when it comes to what counts. I just wish one of the good secular textbook publishers would offer a program as complete as Apologia at a reasonable price.
  9. Both of my children dance with my oldest in a youth ballet company. Programs like the one at Butler are the best of both worlds. Many companies have programs that allow your child to attend college and dance with the professional company, Nashville Ballet does this. My dd who is 10 and lives and breathes dance wants to do it for a living. It is a competitive area, but if she was 18 and wanting to dance or do college I would say dance. The window to accomplish anything in a dance career is small, but there are so many ways to ear a living well after your peak years are over. I mean our company has older professionals that we hire for intensives and guest dancers that make good money. IMHO.
  10. I have been looking into BTB and liked it very much. But I've found that I like to get a review from someone who uses the curric. before I shell out the money, lol. I'm going to check out the Carnegie Mellon online course too! This is just what I was looking for!
  11. I am new here. Haven't posted much, mainly because I am still learning about our new journey into classical education. I have been working on planning my ds 10th grade curriculum that will include French for foreign language. I thought I would just do Rosette Stone and that would be it. But I read such conflicting reviews about it I don't know what to do. I want him to have a strong foundation both in grammar and speaking the language. Any suggestions would be greatly, greatly appreciated!!:bigear:
  12. Hello all! I am new here and new to classical education. My children and I are excited about this new adventure in our homeschooling lives. I have been hs for 6 years. What I want to know if any of you use the Memoria Press guides to The Iliad and The Odyssey? If so how did you schedule the lessons? The teacher's guide says some lessons will take longer than others but doesn't give an idea to how long. I am using this for my ds who is in 9th grade this year and requested to study the Greeks and these books.
