  1. Has anyone had children do the online Well-Trained Mind Academy grammar classes?
  2. My son is doing Latin 1 online at Schole´Academy with Mrs. Reeves. She is wonderful, but if I had a 6th grader, I'd have him do Fundamentals of Latin at Wilson Hill Academy with Kelly Songer and then move on to Latin 1 at either school.
  3. My son is in 7th grade this year and is doing The Great Conversations 1 with WHA. He is a reluctant but capable reader and TGC1 is his favorite class. My daughter started TCG classes in 9th grade. She is a senior this year in TGC 6 and wishes she could have done them all. I chose TGC classes over Omnibus because they combine the primary & secondary Omnibus into one class. WHA has also scaled 1 & 2 to make them appropriate for middle schoolers. I try to read the books along with my son. Some he reads on his own and I read after him. If they are really challenging we will listen to an audio book while he follows in the book or I'll read aloud. His favorite book is now the Odyssey. I'm really going for exposure and building a firm foundation for high school. Here's what my son is doing this year: History, Literature & Bible: The Great Conversation 1 (WHA) Writing: Writing & Rhetoric 5 (Schole´ Academy) Grammar: Fix-It Grammar (Will not do again) Latin: Latin 1 (Schole´ Academy) Math: Pre-Algebra (Schole´ Academy) Science: Apologia Human Body
  4. Has anyone taken AOPS Algebra 1 with WTMA? How did your student like it? What is the homework load?
  5. Has anyone had children take a Well Trained Mind Academy Grammar course? I would have to have my son do the recorded version.
  6. I forgot Mr. Viera for Rhetoric 2!!! It has been a fabulous class. He really makes writing a senior thesis doable.
  7. My daughter is graduating with WHA in May 2020. I'm always looking for teacher recommendations so here are some teachers my kids have really enjoyed and the classes they took. Mrs. McGahey - LA2 & LA4 (Mrs. Wise is new, but I know who recommended her and they give her high marks too.) Mrs. Songer - Latin 1 Mr. Colvin - Rhetoric 1 & AP Art History (High school kids love his dry sense of humor) Mrs. Lucas - Spanish 1 & 2 (Very gifted online Spanish teacher!) Mrs. Seefried - Math 6 Mr. Reini - Algebra 2 (He actually makes math fun.) Dr. Bailey - Honors Chemistry Mr. Dwelle - Honors Physics 2 (My daughter says he is really good at teaching the math of physics.) Mr. Martin - The Great Conversation 5 (My son has TGC 2 with him next year.) Mr. Lawrence - The Great Conversation 1 Mr. Handermann - My son will have Latin 2 with him next year. He was recommended by a friend Mr. Bradley - Two friends have kids in his class and they really like him.
  8. Wilson Hill Academy (WHA) has posted their class schedules for next year. https://www.wilsonhillacademy.com WHA Schedule 2020-21.pdf
  9. My daughter is STEM bound and she did The Great Conversations 1+4, 5, 3, and presently 6. In fact, she is graduating from Wilson Hill Academy in May 2020. However, she did not do additional writing classes that required reading addition literature. She started with Fundamentals of writing at WHA and got a good base to make up for doing Classical Conversations Challenge A & B in 7th and 8th grade. She found Logic 2, Rhetoric 1, and now Rhetoric 2 continued to improve her writing. WHA has added additional writing classes since she started. I have 2 friends with students in the Advanced Composition classes, and they really like that the classes only meet once a week, have good feedback, and use the same literature from TGC classes.
  10. My daughter is graduating from Wilson Hill Academy in May. She has received an amazing education, but she is a very motivated student that loves to learn even though she struggles with a learning disability. There is nothing like taking The Great Conversation 3 with Mr. Etter! He is a phenomenal teacher that makes learning fun. My son is currently in TGC 1 in 7th grade. He is not getting as much from the class as my daughter did who started in high school (she started with TGC1+4) but he is learning reading stamina and being introduced to fabulous literature he would not read for me. I consider it training for high school. Whether you do TGC 4, 5 or 6, I’d still recommend TGC 3 if you can take it with Mr. Etter.
  11. If he did Apologia chemistry, wouldn't he do AP Chemistry instead of pre-Ap Chemistry? Pre-Ap Chemistry, from what I understand, is regular Chemistry at a faster pace therefore you cover a little more material. This is my daughters first year at Wilson Hill Academy. It has been a great experience. If you contact them, they are very good about connecting you with a teacher that can help you decide on the best class for your son. Novarre science is mastery based. My daughter is using it for Physics this year. We have always used Apologia and she likes the change. Because it was our first year of doing online classes I had her do the regular Physics class at WHA. Next year, however, I plan on her doing Pre-AP chemistry with WHA. I've heard wonderful things about WHA Pre-cal/trig class with the teacher Ann Stublen. You may want to check that class out too.
  12. My daughter is taking 3 online classes as a ninth grader at Wilson Hill Academy: Honors Comp with Starlet Baker, Physics 1 with Adair Paul & The Great Conversation 1+4 with Bruce Etter. It has been a great experience! The education she is receiving is far superior to Classical Conversations Conversation's Challenge Program in which we had been involved as well as the expensive, private college prep schools in our area. Are there any others taking classes at WHA? I'm already looking at classes to take next year and which teachers to choose? I am particularly interested in Rhetoric 1 which is taught by Scott Baker or Tom Vierra as well as Pre-AP Chemistry with Ranya Bailey.
