Dictation Day by Day Question
April Walker replied to coastal academy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I found several different years of Modern Speller Dictation Day by Day online and love the idea of daily dictation, but I am afraid if I try to use something on my ipad I will quickly give it up. Are there any tricks to using this digital version for someone who really prefers an actual book but doesn't have the money? For example, just scrolling through it, I am already overwhelmed with how to plan it. There is a section for dictation, and I can't tell how I'm supposed to use the review words. Then a section for copywork or dictation but not numbered, so not part of the daily dictation? Then there is memorization. I feel like if it was an actual book I would have sticky notes all over it to help me. -
Free Accuplacer test online somewhere?
April Walker replied to steppingstonemomma's topic in The College Board
http://www.testprepreview.com/accuplacer_practice.htm http://www.brookhavencollege.edu/studentsvcs/testingcenter/accuplacer_prep.aspx http://accuplacer.collegeboard.org/students/accuplacer-tests I also found a sample test on my city library database called Learning Express Library. I had to create an account but it was free. -
Carol's Affordable Curriculum OR The Learning Box
April Walker replied to Rebel Jedi Mom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I'm curious about this too. I like the looks of The Learning Box and the price of Carol's. I wish I could see a sample of Carol's. It looks much more affordable. -
POLL: Home School Tracker +
April Walker replied to Mommyfaithe's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have a hard time getting on the computer on a regular basis to update everyone's completed assignments and print out checkoff sheets. What I have found is that I need to have blank assignment sheets (from Donna Young's website). I fill them in by hand a few weeks at a time. On HS Tracker I have the lesson plans that have most of the assignments. For example, in our CLE workbooks, it lists each assignment. I only keep grades for quizzes and tests. I don't worry about if they completed the assignment on the actual day assigned. For Apologia Science, my son takes a co-op class, so I just list each module for the date it's due and enter the entire module grade once the assignment has been graded and returned. I've tried keeping up with every single little thing on tracker, and it did not work well for me. I'm too busy for that. Better for me to have a stack of blank assignment sheets for me to list out their next assignments quickly while I'm sitting at the table with them. -
The nerve of him! <grin> I would love for him to be able to pick whatever he wants. I'd love for him to take piano lessons, but we don't have a piano or the money for lessons. He says, "They're my electives. It's not fair. <whine, whine> I should get to pick which electives I do." I chose Spanish for him because I've taken it and am somewhat familiar, and we live in Texas. He has also taken health and drivers ed this year. My oldest two kids did dual credit at the community college starting in 11th grade, and that's what I plan for this child as well. I know from experience that he really needs to know his way around Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This means I will be picking his computer elective because he needs it. I'd like him to do Logic, Bible, and whatever else I want (LOL). I have to teach these myself or buy self-teaching curriculum as inexpensively as possible, so I am somewhat limited. How do others handle these situations? After all, I got to choose my own electives, too, in high school.

FREE.....uploaded schedules/workbooks
April Walker replied to mjbucks1's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thank you so much for posting this! -
I've heard so many stories from my friends about how Teaching Textbooks made their kids stop crying over math. I decided to get the Geometry for next year. I have read pros and cons of TT, but I think it is more important to me for my son to understand and hopefully even enjoy math than for him to be a math major. I also hope to hear some TT success stories!

If your child takes Pre-Algebra in 9th grade
April Walker replied to dancer67's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I do not believe this can receive a high school credit. Maybe someone else will chime in. -
Help me put together a curriculum on a budget!
April Walker replied to mommyto4QT's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It's fairly inexpensive I would use it for language arts and math The library is perfect for those ages to cover science and history -
Are there any recent opinions of this online writing class?

When kids are a bad influence on yours...
April Walker replied to Lovedtodeath's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Your children should come first. I also have banned a "bad influence". It can be hard for them to understand -
