  1. Absolutely write the library board! An acquaintance of mine was also unhappy with our library when she moved to our town. She joined the library board and advocated heavily for the children's section. Not only did our library expand the children's section, but local homeschool groups (she's a homeschooler) are regularly contacted and asked to put in requests for certain books. Our local library has come a looong way since we moved here. Thank goodness she acted as the squeaky wheel :).
  2. The GHEA conference is having the used book sale. I don't think the conference at Cobb has one though. Ghea's used book sale is definitely worthwhile.
  3. I read this book in high school because it is a 'classic' and then promptly banned it from my memory bank!
  4. We have read Paddle to the Sea and Seabird. My dc loved them, but only as read alouds. I like the fact my older children enjoyed them as much as my younger ones.
  5. Well you already have it and started it. I would just move on unless there is a compelling reason to stop and backtrack.
  6. Y'know, I never snacked until I had children. They seem to be hungry all day long, and it's just so easy to reach over and help myself to what they're having...
  7. titled with children's names? I was able to read some excerpts and found them interesting. Thanks, Sophia
  8. Yes, this is a great way to spend Sunday evenings. My dd's and I loved tonight's show!
  9. I'm trying to read this too, and it's going slow for me as well. Sounds like a good story, but it's confusing in parts.
  10. It's cold in Georgia too, and dh and ds are camping in tents right now(!) with the Boy Scouts. Aargh! I 've been trying to call dh on his cell to talk him into coming home, but he must be out of range. Someone tell me they'll be fine...I kept waking up last night worrying about them.
  11. This is a great idea! I was concerned ds would forget his Algebra next year when he does geometry, but LOF will be a great way to keep it fresh. I had the chance to preview the books through our library and I know ds will really like them, but replacing Chalk Dust with LOF would have sent dh through the roof.
  12. My dc are going crazy over the snow too! We're just south of Atlanta and the younger ones don't remember snow from when we lived in Chicago. Me-I could do without it. I feel like a Scrooge; snow...bah! Humbug!
  13. Our friends run a Christian camp that we have sent our son to from the time he was 7-12. He's too old now, but will return as a counselor in training next year. Meanwhile, my 12 y.o.dd went last year and will go this year with her 9 y.o. sis. They weren't ready to go any younger because it is a sleepover camp. The older two have each come back on a spiritual mountain from their week there, and I can't wait for them to go again. I was always hesitant to send my kids to camp because of stories I'd heard, but it's been a wonderful experience for us.
