  1. tampamommy, thanks for the input. We also live in Florida just north of Tampa. I've hesitated to use FLVS in the past but DD14 is currently taking the anatomy and physiology course and so far so good. The information is a bit light in certain sections so we pull out an advance bio or anatomy book for additional help.....or just google. We're toying with the idea of AP Calc and other AP classes.
  2. Or even outschool.com. DD12 just took a mindfulness for tweens class today and loved it. She can't wait for the next 3 classes.
  3. You can try Open Tent Academy. Ms Eva is offering tons of great classes this semester.
  4. We used WW for both of our girls and we were on grade. This workbooks worked great for us and both girls definitely retained the information. Each week they incorporate new words into their writing assignments or during conversations. It became a challenge to see who could use more words each week....and use them correctly.
  5. Thanks so much, Mark. I had already found those two links. Was hoping for something a bit more.
  6. DD14 is taking the last of Mr. D Math's classes (pre-calc/trig) so we're looking for a new provider for 10th grade. I'm considering FLVS AP Calculus but there are very few reviews out there. If not FLVS, then we'll DE. Any thoughts on FLVS AP Calc?
  7. We've been using history and science grade 7 for about 3 months and DD12 really likes it. She prefers the cut and dry approach (video lesson followed by quiz), and she's learning and has made great strides with her note taking skills. Her notes are neat and organized and she definitely references these notes for the quizzes and tests. Acellus would not work for our other daughter who needs live classes and open discussions with teachers and other students.
  8. What about FLVS? We've only taken two classes so far. HOPE (PE) course - just to check the box. And honors anatomy and physiology which is going very well; we have an excellent teacher who provides pointed feedback to DD.
  9. Thanks, Regentrude. We're considering a state college for DE, so you're info is very helpful. Heigh Ho, JHU-CTY looks like a viable option for us. DD will be taking the math placement test this week. She's currently taking pre-calc/trig so we're anxious to see where she places. Thanks. We're also going to look at UC Scout.
  10. Arcadia, you mentioned DE for physics. Does anyone know if colleges would prefer to see DE physics over AP physics? DD wants to become a trauma surgeon (obviously subject to change), so sciences are high on our list of priorities with physics being her favorite.
  11. Heigh Ho, where did you take AP Physics 1? We're looking for an online live class for next year.
  12. Lol! Sorry but we moved from Pa to Fl 8 years ago and love it here! What field of study does your son plan to pursue?
  13. I couldn’t agree more about the pluses regarding TB area. We love the state parks, preserves and hiking trails, plus St Pete and Clearwater are an easy drive. We’re heading downtown tonight for Harry Potter in Concert at the Straz - which offers a tremendous lineup of shows. With the arts and sports teams, there’s always something to do. It’ll definitely be worth your time to schedule a campus tour and explore the area.
  14. We live less than an hour north of USF and it is becoming the go-to-school among our homeschool and public school friends. We know of four homeschooled seniors who were accepted under early admission this year. All four are DE at St Pete College (SPC) and anticipate all credits being accepted. Three of the four scored above minimum SAT requirements while one scored below but pulled in As at SPC. We’ve been on campus several times. We’ve attended plays and ballet performances which were very well done. We’ve interacted with students after a performance of the Nutcracker and dancers were enthusiastic and engaging. Both of our daughters gave presentations to professors in the geology department two years ago as part of USFs Karst Conference and it was an incredible experience. Our youngest is a rock hound and was taken back when one professor took us until his lab so she could hold a stalactite. In addition USF is becoming more successful at obtaining grant money for its programs which is obviously a huge plus for professors and students. In fact, my aunt who is an ICU nurse in PA said a few of the doctors told her that our oldest daughter shouldn’t leave the state for her undergrad but she attend USF as its reputation keeps improving. The school isn’t downtown Tampa but is also definitely not in a rural area. However, we’ve felt comfortable and safe touring the school. I know that if our oldest decides to stay in state that USF will be near the top of her list.
  15. I also posted this on another board.... I simply had to share our first semester experience with Open Tent Academy. In one word . . . excellent. DD14 is taking 20th century wars; lights camera action; and art history. She will also take deaf cultures next semester. DD12 is taking powerful paragraphs and will be taking study skills next semester. We've had an extremely positive experience and rewarding first semester for 9th and 7th grades. All classes offer a live component which our girls prefer. Every teacher was engaging, responsive and provided detailed feedback on assignments. Assignments were graded on a timely basis too. Perhaps most important to me is the fact that I received prompt responses to my emails and questions . . . even with several teachers being based in Israel! The time difference was unnoticeable to me. DD14 has a new found passion for history, a greater appreciate for art history, and dare I say....I love for writing....eh, well, not exactly a love. But let's say, a comfort level I've never seen from her before. Ms Eva's style resonated with DD and made those five paragraph essays attainable. DD12, who loves to write but resists editing is finally realizing that her first draft is certainly not her best effort, and that with more time and due diligence, her grade and positive feedback increases. Overall, I highly recommend OTA.

  17. DD14 is also doing well and completed the semester with a strong overall score. While she prefers the live component (like Ms Jetta's physics), she's handled this class very well. Her time management skills have been strong; she completes all assignments the week due without carrying anything over to the next week. I think this is key to staying on top of everything. DD's a stickler for deadlines....something I didn't care much about at that age. One thing I would recommend to others is to complete the three writing assignments early. DD enjoyed these assignments because she had freedom to pick an article of her choice. While DD is enjoying the class, we will look for a live chem class for next year.
  18. I'm struggling to find an English class for DD14 for 10th grade next year. She's not strong in writing, but is learning a ton from Open Tent Academy's Ms Eva. I'm hopeful Eva will offer a solid option for next year, but thought I'd put a note out to everyone. DD prefers online live secular classes. We considered FLVS (Florida Virtual which is free for us in Fl.) But the course doesn't offer much opportunity to read complete books....it's mostly excerpts. With the help of the hive, she will be taking Witty Wordsmith with Lukeion in the fall, but that's all I have so far. (We wanted this class to help with medical terminology.) I can't put her in an intensive writing class because she wouldn't do well or have the time. It takes her days to complete a five paragraph essay. Any ideas? Thanks so much!
  19. We've taken Stowaway and the Cacao class. Our daughter loved both of them. She liked having the opportunity to speak at each class and present her ideas and opinions. The weekly assignments were always fun and educational bringing in a wide range of subjects.
  20. Yes. I have paid that much for a class. If my kids really want something, I find the money.
  21. FundaFunda Bio is much lighter than I anticipated. It may take DD14 3 hours a week - watch the video lectures, take notes, rewrite notes, complete 6 to 8 questions and take a quiz. Add in a few extra hours to study for a test. Plus, there are three writing assignments each semester which took about 2 hours for each. She also reads additional materials and watches supplemental videos on her own.
  22. Congratulations! Such an incredible accomplishment. We're putting together our paperwork now for submission for the silver. Looking forward to hearing about everyone's medal presentations!
  23. We also look forward to our thanksgiving break because it is our catch up week!
  24. Thanks for the suggestions! I reached out to Lukeion re witty wordsmith and heard back right away with great info and link to one of two classes which focuses on medical terms. It's a one semester class and looks promising. I have a few workbooks saved in my Amazon cart as well. I may be able to use a workbook and medical terminology course for the second semester. A combination of your three suggestions may be the key. Thanks again!
  25. Dd14 remains steadfast in her desire for a career in the health care field. We both feel that a Latin class would be helpful as she tackles medical terminology in the future. She doesn’t need this class to fulfill a foreign language requirement. We’d apply it as an elective. Any suggestions?
