  1. Ms Marie who teaches ASL through CurrClick is also outstanding. We've been taking lessons with her for 3 years. And used CurrClick a ton when the girls were in elementary school. At that time, they offered a wide range of classes but as you've all mentioned, CurrClick failed to advertise and update their image. Outschool.com has definitely filled a void. I have seen a huge change in prices through outschool.com since we started using them just 2 years ago. Very few five and ten dollar options anymore. Yet we still take several fun classes through them. I just need to do a better job budgeting it all in.
  2. I'd try opententacademy.com. They offer a few options which may work.
  3. Thanks for the recommendations. I looked at Stanford but I'm not sure I can justify $5,000. I'm sure it's a fantastic course, and we have no problem paying for quality courses. I just don't want to spend frivolously if there's a comparable option out there.
  4. I just received a notice from Ms Eva at Open Tent Academy stating they are offering live online sessions for parents to meet some of OTA's teachers. I signed up for two of the eleven sessions and can't wait to see if these teachers are a good fit for our girls. Check out opententacademy.com for more info or I'm sure you can email Ms Eva for details. I personally feel this is a tremendous opportunity to get a look at a prospective teacher before sending in the registration fee.
  5. DD14 9th grade is enjoying FundaFunda bio. The course is very manageable. It's not overly difficult or challenging even with the extra honors questions. Don't get me wrong....she definitely studies, takes notes, rewrites notes. She's prepared for tests and quizzes. But it isn't a stressful class. Dr Dana's recorded lectures make up the bulk of the curriculum, with outside videos and readings tossed in. There is a textbook (Miller Levine), but it's not used much. I've noticed for certain topics/chapters, Dr Dana refers to the textbook. DD uses the textbook as an additional resource especially when it's a topic that interests her. The lectures are well done, but DD does complain that she can't see what Dr Dana is writing on the white board until she moves her hand away. She then needs to pause the video to catch up with her note taking. Not a huge issue, but our girl definitely reminds me how annoying it is. Dr Dana is very responsive when it comes to answering DD's questions. She usually responds within a few hours and no more than a day an dher answers and explanations are excellent. Dr Dana also gives quality feedback on all assignments. The lab component is not as strong as DD would like; she loves labs and would like to do more of them. DD does prefer the live online class structure and misses the social component with FundaFunda. However, it hasn't taken away from the quality of the curriculum. DD is also taking FLVS Anatomy and Physiology Honors this year. She's able to manage both sciences pretty well. Overall, FundaFunda has been a solid course for us. With this foundation, we plan on AP Bio or DE for 12th grade.
  6. Yes, 2peanuts, it took DD12 (Powerful Paragraphs Class) roughly 30 minutes per day for her assignments. Some weeks, the editing process took longer. The assignment checklist for each assignment was very helpful in guiding our daughter through the editing process but it took time for us to go through everything. Putting together the bibliography took up some extra time as well, but not much. Ms Eva's writing schedule was well outlined and communicated, so we had a daily plan. DD14 (Lights Camera Action) does not enjoy the writing process....at all. So it took her considerably longer - at least double the amount of time. Her 5 paragraph essays took forever! But with each paper, she's getting better.
  7. We're still looking for an AP Physics C class for 2018-2019. DD took Ms Jetta's physics in 8th and loved the live online format. This year she's taking bio honors (FundaFunda, Dr Dana) and is learning a ton. For 10th grade, she wants to go back to a live online course and decided on physics. (Chemistry will have to wait till 11th grade.) Any recommendations?
  8. Opententacademy.com Ms Eva and her team of instructors are incredible. For writing and a ton of other subjects. They're 2018-2019 schedule is posted.
  9. Blue Tent Online - AP English classes Georgia Virtual School
  10. Look up opententacademy.com. Their fall classes are posted and they're offering two English Lit classes plus a host of others. All classes are live online as well as recorded if you miss a class. We are very heavy in the maths and sciences, but have found OTA to fit in perfectly with our schedule.
  11. Open Tent Academy just posted their 2018-2019 schedule, so you may find some options there.
  12. Also posted this on the k-8 board... Dd 12 loved her class at outschool.com with Ms Heather. They made glitter jars and practiced breathing and meditation techniques. The class was tremendous. Ms Heather just started a weekly club, so thought I'd share! Ages 12 to 17. https://outschool.com/classes/club-mindfulness-7RxRGrxH?sectionUid=5b9ce4d4-18ce-4ba1-b19c-7d6f184a9bae&ruid=0b952a16-6ec4-405a-9484-9bfd0ae86d0a&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link

  14. mrdmath.com live online classes twice weekly help sessions excellent teacher
  15. Here's what we have so far for our 12 year old dd: Geometry (Mr D, live online classes) Writing/Literature (Open Tent Academy) Wordly Wise 8 Growing with Grammar 8 ASL 202 (Currclick) History (Acellus - not my first choice but she likes it and does it!) Science (Acellus - ditto!) Theater (FLVS) Plus, mind benders which she loves. And math minutes, a reading comp workbook tossed in every now and then. Dance - 10 hours/week Acting - Saturday mornings w/ two shows a year She likes field trip zoom's virtual classes and short term classes from outschool.com, so we add those in when the schedule allows.
  16. We have had a very positive experience with Open Tent Academy, London. The girls' teachers have all been prepared, passionate, eager to teach, and very willing to work with us. We had a conflict with our schedule this semester and DD14's teachers were most accommodating. Feedback on assignments has been timely, comprehensive and full of value - - all teacher comments have been submitted from a positive angle. The single goal being for the student to learn the material and enjoy the process. The girls are taking a total of 6 OTA classes and we only had 2 very minor glitches in technology with the live online classes. We are a secular family, and while I believe we may be in the minority, this has not been a concern. OTA advertises itself as "secular, all inclusive" and thus far, we've found this to be the case. Of course, religion and religious discussions pop up at points during art history class, as religion is the subject of many famous paintings. (Sistine Chapel was studied in class recently.) Also, during Deaf culture, one discussion board question asked students to list ways they identify themselves (i.e., gender, country, religion, hobbies, etc.) Most students noted they were Christians, while our daughter stated she's an atheist....along with other defining characteristics. So far no comments have been posted in response to her statement and I don't anticipate any issue as OTA was designed to be inclusive. I also feel that OTA truly seeks to work with families and design classes around specific needs. I've received several notices asking me for input on class topics and scheduling. I value the opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions. If you have specific questions, I'd definitely reach out to OTA. I've found that they respond promptly to all requests.
  17. Modern State's lineup of classes looks very good - CLEP and AP courses. And free. Which I'm still trying to wrap my brain around. Any reviews out there?
  18. I understand what CalmingTea cautioned about regarding breaks and fitting in family trips/holidays when you outsource and have several asynchronous classes running. We are in the same boat as Mirabillis. Live classes Monday through Thursday with two different providers plus an asynchronous bio class tossed in the mix. We also do not have a week throughout the school year with nothing. Even our dance spring break is different than our class breaks. The girls are definitely used to this schedule and handle it well. We are actually taking time off this March for an extended trip and I'm a mess trying to coordinate classes, get assignments early and obtain extensions. Teachers are fine. It's me with the increased stress level. Know that it can be done, but if your kiddo (or you) needs a full blown spring break to re-energize, then it might not work so well for your family.
  19. That's incredible! You and your son must be thrilled. Well....except that he'd be out-of-state. Good luck with the visit next month. We're located about an hour north of USF and have visited the school several times for different events but we've never had a tour. DD and I can't wait to hear what you both think.
  20. Hope everyone is doing well on their Congressional Award journey! I found this 2017 program today and it has an incredible amount of information. Thought I'd share. http://congressionalaward.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/2017_GMC_Program_Book.pdf DD14 is finally in a groove with volunteer hours: 4 hours at one hospital in patient care and 4 hours in another hospital in courier. She's thrilled. She started volunteering in August as has over 100 hours and she loves the schedule. With over 200 physical fitness hours and 100 personal development hours, she's doing ok. We're working on the big trip now!
  21. Try contacting Ms Eva at OpenTentAcademy.com Her instruction and feedback have been excellent.
  22. Dd12 just started a study skills class with Open Tent Academy. First class was yesterday; so far so good. Check out OTA's website for info and a detailed syllabus.
  23. DD will be in 10th grade: AP Calc (FLVS) First year without Mr D, so DD is totally bummed. We thought of DE, but will wait till 11th grade as getting an AA degree isn't a priority for us. AP Physics (Johns Hopkins) She should take chemistry but really wants more physics. I blame it all on Ms Jetta! English (Open Tent Academy) * History (Open Tent Academy) We'll know which history once OTA releases its schedule mid-February. ASL (Currclick and possibly working with a local interpreter for more immersion) Latin Roots (Lukeion Fall 2018) Or possibly another OTA class. Greek Tragedy (Open Tent Academy Spring 2019) This summer: Finish second semester Anatomy and Physiology (FLVS) 4-week pre-med camp Drivers education (FLVS) * English 10th grade Honors (FLVS) It's either OTA English during the school year or FLVS in the summer. She works at a very slow pace so we're both concerned time management may be a real challenge this coming year. She'll continue volunteering at two hospitals - 4 hours at each. And coordinating projects at the one hospital (i.e., crocheting newborn hats for American Heart Month in February). Acting class and latin groove dance class. Continue working on the Congressional Award program. She really needs to start planning for her big trip.
  24. We liked Exploration Education as well. Can definitely be completed independently. Tons of good hands on work, but not overly challenging.
  25. outschool.com They offer so many different types of classes with varying lengths. They are reasonably priced. Different starting dates. Great flexibility
