  1. She does enjoy her volunteer work: 3 hours/week costume department at a community theater and 1 1/2 hours/week teaching yoga for second graders at a local public school. I've wanted to pull these from her schedule because she's getting behind in core subjects. I also don't give her "credit" for this time; I just list these as extra curricular activities. But theater and yoga are her passions. In fact, she's currently spending 5 plus hours a day at the theater for an upcoming musical. I'm personally struggling with the fact that traditional core subjects are no longer her focus, and I need to adjust her academic schedule next year to integrate passions with core requirements. Right now, core is being pushed aside and I know this can't happen in 9th grade.
  2. I'm not sure what I did to my girl for 8th grade this year, but it's been our most challenging. She went from having an incredible 7th grade year to a lackluster 8th grade year. She even received an incomplete for a one semester course this past fall. I'm looking to change it up for 9th grade - perhaps less online classes and definitely no honors or AP classes. She does not like to read so this also puts me in a bind. Oh, and one more caveat, we need secular curriculum. I'm struggling to come up with a plan where she'll meet basic core requirements and yet be happy and successful. She's currently taking: geometry; ancient history; 5 paragraph essay writing; latin/greek roots; asl 3; and general science. (All classes and teachers are truly fantastic . . . I'd give each a 100% recommendation, but she's feeling overwhelmed with a full lineup of live online classes.) Any thoughts from those of you with a child who does not want a plate full of AP classes for 9th grade?
  3. Hi there. We live in the Tampa Bay area and are looking to dual enroll our daughter at SPC (Tarpon Springs Campus) in the fall. Anyone out there with a student at SPC? Any insight or words of wisdom you'd be able to share?
  4. We're in the same boat here. Dd 15 1/2. 10th grade. Driven academically in the past with med school on her radar since 6th grade.... but has always been slow. This year she's unbelievably slow. We've already dropped two classes (spanish and latin) because she was getting behind in her favorites (AP Calc and AP Physics). This still didn't help. So instead of volunteering two mornings a week, we dropped down to one morning. Still not helping. She only has 2 other classes (FLVS English and OTA History). She took the PSAT and didn't finish in time. She works so slowly. I told her today that she's now too far behind in physics to catch up, so I was pulling her from AP Physics and putting her in FLVS Chemistry (it's free). She had a meltdown. Apologizing to me. Saying there's something wrong with her because she can't focus at all. Says she just hits a block and can't move on. Wish I had advice for you, but we're also struggling. I'm hopeful that others may chime in.
  5. Mr D Math And we just started with HighschoolMathLive.com today. Our daughter is taking AP Calc but many of the kids in her class took the pre-calc class last year.
  6. If you want to sign up for this glass mosaic class, it's posted on opententacademy.com. Click on the courses link and then summer 2018 classes. It's a weekend course - the last weekend in July. Have fun! We certainly did!
  7. We had tremendous success with opententacademy.com and their powerful paragraphs class. DD12 took this in 7th grade and will take middle school writing in the fall. Ms Eva's classes may be full - I haven't looked lately. But OTA has a fantastic team of teachers, so it's worth checking out their lineup of classes.
  8. Look at opententacademy.com I know they offer summer writing programs.
  9. Yup. The pics were our DD15 and HP is her passion! OTA may be holding the glass mosaic class this fall. Be on the look out!
  10. Yet again Open Tent Academy has me shaking my head and asking . . . Why didn't I find them sooner?! A few months ago, OTA reached out to registered students and families to ask for volunteers to help pilot a new glass mosaic art class. The directors wanted to do a test run with a new teacher and a very hands on live class. We jumped on the offer! And we weren't disappointed. The glass mosaic class was structured, organized, safe and fun. DD15 had a great time using the "nippers" to cut the stained glass. The entire process was handled with the student's safety in mind - dust mask and safety glasses were required. I can post pictures of DD's final project if anyone is interested. Or check out OTA's facebook page. If you're looking for unique, quality and fun classes for elementary to high school, check out opententacademy.com. In fact, DD12 just asked if I could sign her up for a new OTA class - 30 plus accents in 10 weeks. For a budding actress, how could I refuse?!
  11. Same as synchromom....copy and paste. I'm sure it's overkill, but I like a paper trail and print everything.
  12. Give Ms Eva at opententacademy.com a try. She's very willing to work with homeschool families to address specific writing needs. Perhaps she can help.
  13. We've taken online classes for 6 years now and many don't offer refunds; this doesn't scare me off. I like knowing that the guidelines are clearly spelled out on provider websites and that's the case with OTA. We've had to switch classes due to scheduling conflicts and other reasons and found this process worked seamlessly. OTA's English classes have a been a gold mine for us. This was the first time both girls (ages 12 and 15) weren't in tears. Frustration during the writing process was minimal due to the classroom lectures, detailed instructions and handouts, and feedback.
  14. I'm going to chime in too with a thumbs up for OpenTentAcademy.com. OTA has an extensive list of classes and offers the opportunity for dialogue via their live online format. DD15 loved the discussions in her Lights! Camera! Action! class which focused on movies instead of books.
  15. I've posted before but again we've had tremendous success with Mr D. Dd15 will have her last class with Mr D next week - precalc/trig. She took all of his courses: pre-alg; alg I; geometry; alg II; and now precalc/trig. We will see Mr D for our year end testing tomorrow and our daughter said it's going to be hard to fight back the tears. She adores him. He offers live weekly online classes which we prefer. Plus two weekly live help sessions. He and his staff are readily available to answer any question. Dd12 is currently in his Alg I course. We couldn't be more pleased to have found Mr D.
  16. highschoolmathlive.com offers AP Calc AB Regina London, the instructor, may be some ideas too. Perhaps reach out to her.
  17. Hello, Jetta. Yes. I registered Grace for the class. She's excited. Kari, thanks for your input. Glad to hear it was a good experience for you and your son. Mark T, as always thanks for your research!
  18. Try mrdmath.com. Mr D may have a viable option for you.
  19. I was in the boat with our 9th grader this year! Definite panic mode. DD15 took Lights Camera Action with Ms Eva at OpenTentAcademy.com and it was the perfect fit. She walked students through the structure and requirements for five paragraph essays, and our daughter really embraced the process. I'd recommend any of Ms Eva's classes.
  20. Found this site the other day, highschoolmathlive.com, Regina London, instructor for Calc and AP Calc, responded quickly and thoroughly to my questions. Any reviews out there?
  21. Thank you SJ! This looks great and perfect for us. It's in my amazon cart!
