  1. The Manchurian Candidate by Richard Condon. It's also a movie with Denzel Washington. It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis.
  2. We sent our current 9th grader back to school this year at his request (to a small Christian school). There was a learning curve but now he is really thriving. Still homeschooling the 11th grade daughter and graduated one from homeschool last year. Each child is different. I would have a conversation with your son to see what he thinks. Maybe having a say will help with motivation.
  3. I am from Michigan. It is my understanding that homeschoolers DO NOT have to adhere to Michigan graduation requirements. My son graduated from our homeschool in May. He did have Econ, but he only had one year of a foreign language, not two. Michigan requires two years for their schools (or 1 year FL and an additional year of visual/performing arts, which he also didn't have). The college he wanted to go to didn't require any foreign language so the one year was enough. https://www.michigan.gov/documents/home_schools_122555_7.pdf
  4. Depending on your state's laws, you could have her take art at your local public middle- or high school, free of charge.
  5. Kathy Reichs has a similar series, with a forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan. The TV series, "Bones", is based off these books. Oh, and Kathy Reichs also has a YA series, "Virals", with Temperance Brennan's niece, Tory.
  6. We are in west Michigan and there at least four Christian universities/colleges that I know of here where kids can take dual enrollment...Calvin University, Cornerstone University, Grace Christian University, and Kuyper College. These all grant bachelor's degrees. There are also two D2 state universities, Grand Valley State and Ferris State that have it.
  7. I went through this same thought process for this year, though my DD is going to be a junior. We did Ancient, then Medieval/Ren & Ref for history/lit for 9th and 10th. But I did not want to have to cover one credit of American History in 2 years of a curriculum. Plus it feels like you are stuck if you decide that curriculum isn't working (for us it was Tapestry of Grace...which I loved for my older 3 kids but isn't a fit for this kid.). We looked at but didn't love it. I have decided to use Joy Hakim's The Story of US...all 10 books, 3 weeks per book. I found some pre-done worksheets and will use notebooking with it as well. We'll see how it goes.

  18. Is there a local community or civic theatre near you that offers classes? Has she done makeup before for plays, etc? I would suggest she start a portfolio, if she hasn't already.
