  1. My dd had a mild concussion nearly a year ago and I was also surprised by the casual attitude of the urgent care doc. Even though it's mild, we should have made her rest more (we didn't at all, really, except for no electronics for a couple weeks) and were told she could return to school the next day). Eventually she ended up in a specialty clinic and did specialized physical therapy--it helped a little but I believe if she had just rested she would have recovered sooner. She had headaches for months and still has ringing in her ears that I pray goes away some day. You are right to take it seriously!! I hope your son recovers fully and quickly!!
  2. Much worse with my dd--I couldn't keep anything down before noon! I couldn't drink orange juice which I used to have every single morning. Or certain teas the whole time. Mostly resolved otherwise by second trimester. Mild nausea with ds, again resolved by second trimester. Thankfully!
  3. Right now? FIFA futbol on Univision because we don't have cable. It's in the background. I can tell when someone is close to scoring because the announcers get much louder!
  4. Thanks for this! Copying and pasting the questions and answer choices into a word processor document seems to work fairly well.
  5. Please indulge me a slight brag...my dd got 5's on both World History and Art History. This was through p.s. She worked her tail off.
  6. My dh once left his hang-up bag with his suit and my dresses at home, and we didn't realize it til we were 4 hrs into a 7 hour drive to my cousin's rehearsal and wedding. Another time he forgot his dress shoes and was supposed to be a groomsman for a friend's wedding. Many times it's been small things. I don't see anything wrong with asking an adult if they remembered to pack something. With daily life and kids it's hard to remember everything when traveling and I know I would be grateful if I was reminded about something I especially needed.
  7. Yay!!! What a relief!!! Good job kitty, good job girl.
  8. I hope she comes home and I hope you feel better! Exactly one year ago our bone-headed fuzzball escaped somehow. We plastered the neighborhood with flyers, spoke to neighbors, walked the streets calling for her, set out food on the porch (didn't think to get a trap! I think a stray ate the food), called the vet, the shelters, and the microchip people. A few days later a neighbor up the street called us--she was under their cement steps and had been for a couple days. They fed her and finally coaxed her out--their neighbor saw our poster and told them to call us. So the posters definitely help. Don't give up hope! We had thunderstorms during that time too.
  9. Excellent! And I know it's a coincidence, but the authors' names sure sound nature-y.
  10. Dh heard about it in the chitchat forum on BGG (Board Game Geek).
  11. Dh was just telling me about this last night...as I was drifting to sleep...will have to check it out. He was impressed.
  12. We'll have to check this out--I love the hill country, Patrick Stewart, and Shakespeare! Sounds like a trifecta of awesomeness.
  13. Hoping you can recommend good audio and video versions of King Lear and Tartuffe. With dramas we like to read, listen, and watch. Thanks!!
  14. My 14 y.o. ds is reading the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. My dh recommended it to him, and he is enjoying it. Bonus is that there are over 10 books in the series and more on the way... First book in the series is On Basilisk Station. Ds started with the prequel trilogy that was written for YA. First book is called A Beautiful Friendship. This series is good on its own without the entire other series.
  15. Broccoli salad--the kind that has broccoli florets, red onion, bacon, shredded cheddar and a mayo vinaigrette. Mmmmm. Like this one: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/bodacious-broccoli-salad/ I never use the full amount of sugar and have used sweetener in the past. Maybe you don't need it at all?
  16. Thanks Mark and Margaret--good things to think about. Regarding the colleges not accepting work done off site--Colo Early Colleges has an agreement with a local CC that ensures credit for these classes. And, the problem of the classes not applying to a major at a university is the same for many AP students who find they have to retake chemistry or calculus or what have you because the university will not grant credit for an AP class in the student's major. The problem is not unique to this model, but certainly something to be aware of and check on. As with everything, parents and students have to be on top if it, do the research, know what they are getting into, and make decisions best for their family. We looked at the universities my dd is interested in and all of them classify transfer students as those who have received any college credits after high school graduation; if not, they are considered first time freshmen for scholarship purposes. We aren't looking for an AA, and in fact it is possible we won't use this program at all. Like I said, I put this out there because I believe it could be useful to homeschoolers.
  17. We just got back from an info meeting with Colorado Early Colleges. It is a public charter high school started in 2007 in Colorado Springs by the man who introduced legislation here for guaranteed transfer credit from community college to in-state public institutions. It is affiliated with the Colorado Charter School Institute and not a school district. Now they have campuses in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, and a brand new one in Parker. They work with CCs all over--Front Range, Rampart, Arapahoe, Aurora, Pikes Peak, and even CU Denver and Metro State. The opportunities here are kind of mind-blowing. Every student takes the Accuplacer, which is administered by the Early College. A student can come in as a freshman and start taking college level courses if appropriate, or else they take college prep classes. They provide excellent advising, every semester, to continually tailor the classes to the student's goals. They have had a few students graduate with both a high school diploma and a BA at the same time. Many get an Associate's Degree, many just rack up the college credit hours. They provide a diploma and transcript if you go full time. It is completely free, you don't have to register with the CC. They do all the administrative and financial work. In addition to the college prep classes they also offer college "bridge" classes which are basically general interest, low level college classes offered at their campus (but taught by CC teachers) to sort of acclimate the student to college level work. If the student needs classes not offered on the high school campus, they go to the CC campus. They work with all students, weather university track or career track. Many students graduate with a certificate in any number of fields and can start a job right away, having paid zero for the education. The reason I put this out here is that they welcome homeschoolers and provide a part time option. Full time is 7 college credit hours per semester, part time is 3-6 hours. You can even go full time and still be considered a homeschooler if you choose. I was looking at our local CC and one science plus one math course is 7 credit hours already (which kind of boggles--4 hours for college algebra?) This is the best thing I have found for homeschoolers who would like dual enrollment. Currently there is no waiting list at the Douglas County location (not sure about the other campuses) and they are expecting to expand even more in the coming years. I was really impressed with the presentation and the man who is the Head of School. Hopefully this info will be helpful to someone!
  18. Another fun way to get water if you like fizzy drinks is to drink seltzer water. Our store carries all kinds of flavors, lemon-lime, raspberry, plain, etc. They have no added sugar or sweeteners and very little sodium.
  19. Radney Foster "Everything I Should Have Said" James Taylor "That's Why I'm Here" Zac Brown Band "Foundations" U2 "Zooropa" Paul Simon "Graceland"
  20. May you have a speedy and complete recovery.
  21. What about a few westerns like True Grit (go with the John Wayne version) or High Noon?
  22. Welcome from another south-metro dweller! Who knew there were that many of us?
