  1. When I am logged in and use the advanced search function I can't get it to work properly. I want to search post titles only and it returns searches for the whole post. If I am not logged in it works perfectly. I use this feature often to find specific posts, but I can't do it when I am logged in. I end up logging out just to search, then logging in to post, logging out again to search. Am I the only one?
  2. We will be starting our history studies in January. We are using SOTW and I have the AG. I am curious as to whether Classical Kids and the other books along those lines are worth having if I am already using SOTW with the AG. The other books (as far as I can tell) are Old Testament Days, Ancient Egyptians & their Neighbors, Ancient Israelites & their Neighbors. My kids enjoy the projects and we are planning on spending more than a year on ancients, but I thought there was plenty to choose from in the AG. Are these other books good to have?
  3. Just FYI, Grapevine has a short Birth of Jesus study. I've also been looking at their products and I've purchased this to try it out. It will be a nice study for Christmas and give me a chance to try out their products before making a purchase for next year (we school on a calendar year).
  4. :hurray: I had no idea there was going to be another one!
  5. We've just discussed syllable types in AAS so maybe book 4 will be good timing for us. I think I will order both 4 and 5 now and if 4 is too much I'll have the other one on hand to jump into. Thank you everyone for your responses. We've been doing two pages daily in ETC and he does them independently. I don't think it will be a problem if he needs a little more help from me to get them done. Thank you!
  6. We are finishing up Book 3. I've read that there is one that it's best to skip and come back to later...is it Book 4? If Book 3 was easy for him is it still necessary to skip the next one? Thanks for your expertise all of you who have been there before!
  7. Galloping the Globe or Expedition Earth (they are very similar). Geography and social studies together. :iagree:Definitely some poetry memorisation and memory work. For history, maybe read some Usborne books...Living Long Ago, or Encyclopedia of World History to read and do some related projects out of the SOTW AG as interest leads. I'm surprised how much info my 6yo retains from just reading these. Art projects, maybe from Maryann Kohl books (check your library). Some how-to-draw lessons using Draw Write Now books or watch some Mark Kistler free videos. Don't try to do too much if you've got a baby coming, the lighter schedule will help you in the coming months!
  8. I've never had a problem downloading during these sales...I'm in Australia and the time difference means I am ordering when it is early morning hours in the US. Just FYI for anyone having terrible difficulty and willing to set your alarm to do it in the middle of the night! :)
  9. We have just started Book 1, I would say it is pretty easy, but enjoyable. We do Logic twice a week: mixing up Lollipop Logic, Critical Thinking Activities, and Logic Links A. We only do a few pages at a time so that we aren't just plowing through it and I can see how well he is thinking through it. Logic Links is definitely more challenging and progresses in difficulty. CTA also seems pretty easy but presents a wide variation and it's probably a better value- more pages for the money. I'm not sure if the Lollipop Logic books progress in difficulty or not, there are three books for grades K-2. I love that it's reproducible so I can use it for my younger children (doesn't help you but it might help someone else reading this). I had the edge cut off and bound a copy for my son. The others are reproducible as well. Not sure I've helped much! In order my favourites are: Lollipop Logic, Logic Links, and CTA.
  10. Okay, thank you for this...EAW sounds like just what I am looking for, I'll probably end up buying both. :001_smile:
  11. There are two different books...Encyclopedia of the Ancient World (Internet-Linked) which has 400 pages, and the Internet-Linked Ancient World which has 96 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Usborne-Encyclopedia-Ancient-World-Encyclopedias/dp/0794511414/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314917524&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Usborne-Internet-Linked-Ancient-World/dp/0439785030/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1314917524&sr=8-14 I'm guessing that the shorter one is exactly the same as what is in the Encyclopedia of World History.
  12. I plan to get the Usborne Encyclopedia of World History. We will be doing SOTW1, is it worth it to also get the Usborne Encyclopedia of the Ancient World? I imagine some of the information will be repeated. Both books are 400 pages, with World History devoting about 100 pages to ancients, but also about 100 pages to prehistory. Does the Ancient World go enough more in depth to be worth it? I can't find the table of contents anywhere for the Ancient World, is it 100 pages of prehistory as well? Thanks to anyone who has both of these and can help me out.
  13. Never mind, I found it...just had to click on the arrow and choose "get all."
  14. I'm trying to download Dr. Doolittle in Itunes. It's a long one, and it says on the site to complete the download under podcasts in Itunes. The first portion downloaded automatically- 8 mins 55 sec. How do I get the rest? It's supposed to be 3 hours long. I can't find a help section on the Books Should Be Free website. Help?
  15. I think you must have clicked the ad for audible.com...they are a subscription site. I don't see any charges on Books Should Be Free. When you click on a book, there is an audible ad next to the picture which leads you to the audible site. Don't click on that...instead, look under the book to download in itunes or mp3 versions. Love this, hadn't seen it before!
  16. :iagree:I was just going to respond with a link to this. I have a printed version of this- Natural Structure- A Montessori Approach to Classical Education at Home and found it very useful, although I rely more on WTM for curriculum choices. The task cards at Creek Edge Press look very good as well. http://shop.creekedgepress.com/
  17. :iagree:There are also discussion questions for each read-aloud with a list of vocabulary words for each chapter (the vocabulary words may or may not be new to your kids). There are also mapping activities, just copies of maps for each book that has any geography in it. I find we don't use any of these extras very often. I can come up with my own discussion questions, we discuss vocabulary as it comes up, and we use our own maps rather than the ones provided. Without all that, it really is just a schedule of what days to read what book. I found that following the schedule horizontally rather than vertically worked better for us- reading more chapters in one book at a time rather than just a few pages of each book every day. I will probably no longer be ordering the IG, I think it costs too much for what you get- again, I am using the earlier cores at this point, Cores A & B.
  18. One of the best school items I have is a little magnetic whiteboard, about the size of a sheet of paper. We use it all the time for school- math problems, spelling, etc. I have one for each child and my toddler (almost 2) absolutely loves hers. I have a little mini eraser for it and special markers that we only get out during school time. So generally during school she is drawing, sitting on my lap, or pulling the house apart. Another favourite is the RS abacus (we have two) and other math manipulatives. Between her and my 4yo my house is a HUGE mess at the end of the day, everyday. But, we get school done and that is what matters. We have a clean up, hopefully before my husband gets home. Also, every time I sit down on the couch to read schoolbooks, I have to allow time for reading to the younger ones as well. As soon as they see me sit down they go running to choose their books too. :)
  19. LOVE these! And free!! :hurray: So thorough, looks easy to implement all or just part. I think I will be using pieces of this. Thank you!
  20. So glad you posted this! I hadn't seen these new family cards, love that they are faith-based. So glad there is a discount code, I think the products are pricey but worth it. I've ordered a few things and appreciate the high quality, and I'll be able to use these with all my kids.
  21. :iagree:Love Maryann Kohl books, check your library to get a taste.
  22. I came across this list for ancients on amazon today: http://www.amazon.com/Story-of-the-World-Vol-1-Picture-Books/lm/R2ZJDKC0SGWQC1/ref=cm_srch_res_rpli_alt_1 Picture books. Might help with your ancients list anyway!
