I ordered 6 bathrobes today from Walmart for $4 a piece. These will be for my daughters, my MIL and my mom. I also took advantage of the Walgreens 90% off Christmas sale to get some wrapping paper, bows, and etc. I love the idea of this thread and hope it continues all year long so that we can share deals and ideas.

I have enjoyed reading all your replies. I do like the idea of collecting trips. Our family loves to travel, even though most of our trips are budget trips. I also like the idea of budgeting a certain amount each pay period for myself. I think that'll allow me to indulge myself without guilt.

Lately I have had the urge to start collecting Disney items. I've searched Amazon, Ebay, and even watch tons of YouTube videos on Disney collections. The problem is that although I love the idea of having a collection, I can't bring myself to spend money on a collection. I think I would love to have little bits of Disney throughout my home. I think it would make me smile, but I'm just not sure that I'm going to convince myself to actually spend the money. So what do you collect and does it actually add to your happiness? Does it ever just feel like more stuff? How do you convince yourself to spend money on your collection or am I the only one having this issue?

Thank you. I am copying the suggestions for her. I am sure she will find a few from this list.

My 17 year old is having trouble finding books to read for enjoyment. This is a description in her own words of what she is looking for - historical fiction that shows that day to day lives of women that had difficult lives but overcame. I like stories about slaves that freed themselves or newly emancipated black people that show how they started their new lives, or women that lived during the depression, or the pioneers that walked to the west or settled new land. The main thing is, I want to read stories that talk about day to dayness of their lives. Our librarian suggested the Dear America series, which she loved about 8 years ago, but obviously is not a good fit right now. DD told the librarian that she would love something like Dear America for adults. Any suggestions?

Black History Month?
learning2gether replied to MrsMommy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My girls and I just watched this that was put on at the White House. We really enjoyed listening to the music and hearing some of the stories from the Civil Rights Era. My youngest is also learning the Negro National Anthem. I thought she knew it, but realized recently that she only knew the 1st verse. We also did a unit on how children contributed to the fight for freedom. That was a huge hit. -
Thank you all so much for sharing. I cannot tell you how much this thread has helped me. I knew that my girls would understand, but I wanted more for their Christmas than just them understanding why things weren't as expected. Reading over this thread has really given me some great ideas for how to still make things special.

First I want to make it clear that I am not asking anyone to help us out. I wanted to get that out of the way because I visit a couple of forums where people are complaining about scammers coming on asking for help with Christmas. Our family usually just barely makes ends meet, but we always eek out a good Christmas. This year we had planned to go to Myrtle Beach with another family as the kids big gift and to just buy them a few things each. Due to an emergency medical situation with my husband we are suddenly in a place where we can't do either. We have purchased 1 nice gift for one of our daughters and a small gift for another daughter, but that's it. Our family usually donates to other families during Christmas and the crazy thing is we even picked 2 angels from the tree at church and purchased for them a couple weeks ago. A couple years ago we sent some items to a couple families from here and another forum I visit. We love giving and my girls look forward shopping for other kids each year. I know that it will work out and that the girls won't be scarred for life, but I am still really down about it. I was hoping that some of you would share your been there done that stories. I am hoping that it will make me feel a little better and help me get back into the Christmas spirit. I haven't even told the girls yet, and I'm not sure how I'm going to handle that.

Myrtle Beach the week before Christmas
learning2gether replied to learning2gether's topic in The Chat Board
Thank you for the suggestions. I am making a list. -
Our family will be in Myrtle Beach the week of Christmas and I'm looking for some free/cheap things to do in the area. I am also looking for "don't miss" places to eat. This was kind of a last minute thing and we don't have much of an entertainment budget.

What's In the Bible - awesome dvds

We love these too. We joined Club Jelly Telly at jellytelly.com to watch them. I think it is $5 a month and you get the first 2 weeks free. -
I have heard of it and we do attend a Juneteenth celebration/community festival every year. I am in Florida and there are quite a few festivals in my county and surrounding counties this year. I even saw that one organization was putting on a Juneteenth Rodeo.

Most or many of the episodes are on youtube as full, commercial free episodes. My girls have been watching an episode from youtube every day for about a month. -
I wonder if I'm going to get audited

I have heard that there were a lot of delays due high level so fraud this year. Here is a link to an article about it. -
We are going to the MLK parade that happens here every year. Yesterday we went to the Drum Major for Justice band competition held annually in honor of his memory and the day before that we went to a concert put on by the I Have A Dream Youth Mass Choir, which my two oldest daughters are members of. This week I will also have my two youngest learn the Negro National Anthem and a bit about James Weldon Johnson, the person who wrote it.

We have a few Christmas traditions that my girls really look forward to, but the one they are most excited about which is a tradition carried over from my childhood is being able to open one gift one Christmas Eve. It is always pajamas, but they like to do it anyway. It even helps on Christmas morning because everyone is already in their Christmas PJ's for pictures.

Merry Christmas - A little help
learning2gether replied to learning2gether's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Thank you all so much, but really I am just offering to do what I am able to do. So many of you have talked about purchasing gifts for the children on Angel Tree or other organizations. I don't really have much extra cash, but I have boxes and boxes of great books. My daughters and I had fun last night pulling out some activity books, art books, sticker books and few readers. So, I really do hope someone who can use them sees this post. -
Merry Christmas - A little help
learning2gether posted a topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have been a lurker on this board for years, but do not post often. I have seen a couple Christmas threads where people mentioned not having any money at all to buy presents for their children for Christmas. We don't have a lot of extra money, but we have been able to save a little and I have made enough as an Usborne Consultant to give each of our girls a few gifts. I don't know if this would be a help to anyone here, but I have a pretty large Usborne inventory and would love to put a few fun books in the mail to help put something under the tree. If this would be a help to you please pm me with your mailing address and the gender and ages of your children.
