  1. I think coaching the child on puke procedure is a good idea too. Run a few "drills." This might help direct the mess. Bring a bowl, lined with a few plastic grocery bags. Clean up will be a breeze. Some baby wipes and disinfectant wipes. Water to swish the mouth and life saver mints to take the taste out of the mouth.
  2. Consider... Get the bigs working on some assignments. Work with the K'er. Around here, I can do Phonics/Writing/Math in about an hour w/ K. You could have the prek sit in on that. Check in w/ the big kids. Let one continue to work independently while you work w/ another, then switch. Fit a few minutes in with the prek if still needed. At these ages, you could just let the littles listen in on the bigs history/science...maybe w/ some age appropriate coloring sheets. You could also get some picture books for them to look through that relate. How often do you do history and science? Do you do them both every day? Do they have to be done that way?
  3. Is it too big? Would a daily checklist be more manageable for him?
  4. Greek Alphabet Code Cracker Jesus in the Spotlight (Precepts) Abeka Math Abeka Phonics/Language/Writing Reading: assorted books, extensive home library VP Old Testament Cards/Readings SOTW, finishing 1, starting 2 RSO Life Haven't decided...may add in some american history
  5. I have not read any of the responses to the question, my opinion is not influenced in any way by other posts. I'd say the question doesn't deliver enough information. We are told how C spends his money, but none of the others. The answer could be B, despite earning less than C, it's possible that they are the ... there's some term that I can't think of right now...shabby something? So, they have the ways of the well off, even if they can't spend the dough. Then there's C who earns it and spends it in lavish ways. I guess my answer is C, but it doesn't mean they have true "class." I'm American.
  6. The writing tablet is what it says, a tablet. Most of it is blank. You can just buy writing tablets at wal mart or target. The Writing with Phonics has activities and such, so you will want to buy that. You will also want the TM. My 7 year old and 6 year old have pretty nice handwriting from using Abeka.
  7. This might be the most helpful thread on science I've seen here in a long time. Does ES have a stance on creation/evolution?
  8. About 45 minutes spent on morning circle time and Bible lesson. About an hour of lessons/seatwork for core subjects. I know from experience that this will go up to as much as 2 hours by the end of the year. Another hour later in the day spent on a science lesson or history. The total amount spent doing independent seatwork averages an hour (less now at the beginning of the year, more at the end). I think.
  9. I followed the Usborne links to a NOVA site that has footage of Alexandria. Unfortunately, despite having my video programs updated, it's really blurry to the point of there being no point in watching. My kids were all excited, now they're not. Is it this blurry for everyone? Does anyone have any suggestions on clearing this up? Thanks.
  10. Did Earth/Space last year. Two days a week is plenty for a lesson per day. We also used the Usborne Internet linked encyclopedia and followed the links listed.
  11. I've seen stuff on Pintrest, like the 100 workout (can't remember exactly what it is), but all exercises you can do yourself. Also, look online at the magazines like Women's Day and Good Housekeeping. I know the hardcopy mags often come with suggested workouts and I'm sure that they post them online.
  12. We had some plague...from the first toss of the cookies until the last cough was a solid month. Now, there are 6 of us in the house and we kind of fell like dominoes, but there were at least 2 solid weeks you were sick and another week to just recover. And it all started with the sore throat from hades.
  13. My biggest grading problem (since the brainstorming is working) is that my kids do worksheets n plastic pouches w/ dry erase markers. So I need to find a way to keep things from getting smudged until I can get to them.
  14. I think one of the points of these wonderful machines is that you can use what you want.
  15. I honestly never gave much thought to how clean stuff was. I mean, I wash it all anyways. My big reason to bag is because I do not want 8 pears, 6 apples, 10 yams, all rolling around the bottom of my cart. So I bag for convenience. I do not bag bananas or melons. Grapes and potatoes are already bagged. I do wish they had some heavier bags for sweet potatoes. Like the corn, the bag rips every time. I'm too lazy to get around to reusable bags. And I'm not willing to pay the extra for the weight of the bag when they weigh the produce.
  16. You won't know if you don't ask. Look into it, apply even. It won't hurt you in any way, but that you need to jump through whatever hoops your state requires. I know NY requires a weekly online check in. You sign into your account to let them know you're still unemployed. Easy. Depending on how long you accept benefits, they may ask you to attend a seminar once in a while (like, on how to make a resume), but that's it. You guys need to look after yourselves.
  17. I remember when I was a child, there were always a lot of cousins around. Special time with grandparents did come later, when I was older, but when a child, it was a houseful! And the olders did look after the littles. I guess the question would be...what are the cousins like? Do you think they can be semi responsible? Do you think they would harm your children? etc. If you can't find a cause for worry such as that, why not give it a try for even just one night. I am so glad I got to spend lots of time with my cousins as a child.
  18. For the last two years I have looked things over before they could be excused for the day. With the increase number of students (I'll have three of mine doing work this year), I find this to be inconvenient and would like to be able to put it off. I have a few problems though. 1) Little extra room for papers to sit and wait to be graded and 2) About half of their work is w/ dry erase markers. If I let them sit too long, they will get smudged/erased. I've tried to think of a work around for this problem, but have come up with nothing. I do think doing it as soon as possible is good b/c their minds are still on their work.
  19. I'm so glad to hear the pastor's response and hope that this will quickly be resolved.
  20. As someone already summed up the ed req. for NY, I'll add that Ft. Drum is kind of...out there. Don't think you'll be zipping off to a museum for the day or anything. If you enjoy getting out and going places, I'd look at some other options. While the snow does get tiresome towards the end, for the most part, people know how to deal with it. Roads get cleaned and life goes on. I wouldn't be in that area w/o 4 wheel drive though.
  21. Thanks for starting this. I was thinking of doing a search. I've been giving 2 choices (one of them always being pbj), but I'm leaning towards doing something in the crock a few times a week, with no choices. I hate feeling like a short order cook.
  22. I don't get time like that. If I did, I'd probably do a bit of each. I wouldn't tangle with the dishwasher, but I might tackle a larger project that I haven't had time for or can't do with everyone underfoot. I'd be sure to "find" plenty of time to read a book and enjoy some foods I like. Also, while doing said project, I'd be able to listen/watch something, that would be nice too.
  23. If you develop your own forms, they're less likely to notice what you leave out. A lot of districts ask for information they are not entitled to/not at the right time. A blank screams for attention. A page you create probably won't draw as much attention. This is my second year reporting, just got my post office confirmation back today. I feel fairly confident with a curiosity over the new superintendent we have. Hopefully s/he won't try anything funny.
  24. Now that the landing is done and pictures are starting to come in, where is THE site to find pictures? Thanks
