  1. I'm definitely going to teach her these steps. She also struggles with word problems and I really think the comprehension and word problems all go together. Working diligently to correct this. We just started WWE, so hopefully that will help also. I put her in level 3 since this is a whole new ballgame for her. I was actually trying to decide between level 2 or 3, based on the placement tests. Going to give 3 a week or 2 to see how she does. Thanks for all the advice!!!
  2. Okay, let me try this again (after incorrectly posting this on the wrong thread LOL) I'm finding this one very interesting! If I were to do this, any idea what level I would put her in? Is it something that builds on itself or do I just stick her in 4th grade? Hmmmm Any placement tests that I couldn't find?
  3. Oy - I'm a moron LOL. This was supposed to go in a thread that I created yesterday LOL. I was searching to find more about the V/V program and obviously quoted the wrong post...sorry!

  5. I'm looking for something (besides reading, reading and more reading) to maybe assist my 4th grader with comprehension. She has excellent decoding and fluency, but her comprehension seems to be lacking. I don't know if it's a lack of paying attention or what, but she seems to just not be as good as she should be with it. This is our first year of hs'ing and we just got her state scores back and comprehension (which is the lowest out of all the reading scores) went down even lower than last year. It's still proficient, but not advanced like the rest of the scores. I realize I can't completely gauge everything on standardized test scores, but it's been obvious that she will read a book and not be able to answer all the questions I feel she should be able to from it. Is there a particular curriculum that you feel would help with this? Anything I can/should do besides reading and questioning?
  6. We just started Apologia Astronomy and are loving it. There's a Junior Journal for my 6 yr old, and the regular Journal for the 9 yr old. It has projects in ever lesson (they suggest 1 lesson to last 2 weeks), but not over the top. It's been fun so far :)
  7. I AGREE!! DH & I just went to see it last night for my bday. I hadn't read the book, but LOVED the movie! Getting the book next week - kind of backwards from normal, but I'm excited to read the book now :)
  8. I teach in our Cubbies class and we don't do anything at all like that. I don't know 100% about the older kids, but I don't believe they do either. Maybe you could talk to someone at the church about your feelings with this? Seems a little extreme.
  9. I bought that same one for my business about a year ago. I use it even more now that I'm homeschooling!
  10. My sister actually met her husband at a swingers party...however, she didn't realize it was a swingers party (no comment on if her future dh knew or not ;) ). Anyway, the point is, these people didn't just pounce and my sister was friends with them for a looonnnnggg time (long after this party) before she knew that they were swingers. They had a way of feeling people out beforehand. With that being said, I think you did a good thing by not going. Gut decisions are way too important in this day and age to completely ignore them. I would like to hear if you find out anymore details about them though ;)
  11. I sold one for a friend of my grandma's on Ebay. Wasn't too difficult and both buyers and sellers were happy! Hope you're able to come up with something!
  12. We have enough life insurance on dh to pay off our home and live comfortable for years to come. DH is a smoker and I'm all too aware of what that means. I don't mess around with this :(. HOWEVER, I am a moron and don't have insurance on myself. That is my next step. Just a story for all of you to keep in your minds: A dear friend of mine, lost her healthy, happy husband at the age of 49. He had out-patient hernia surgery and died 4 days later. He had a large life insurance policy through AT&T, where he had worked since he was 18 years old. At the time that he began working there, he listed his mom as the beneficiary. Through that time he apparently never changed it. He then passed away with one daughter in college and the other in her senior year of high school. The MIL said she would split the life insurance policy 50/50 (which is ridiculous, but it was something at least). The money got the better of her and she ended up taking it all and leaving her recently widowed DIL and 2 grand daughters with NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Mind you, this is a supposed God loving woman who was very close with the family. There were NO ill feelings or family wars, and yet she did this. My friend has since lost both of their houses (one rental, and one gorgeous home that they lived in) and had to move into a small, rental home. Their older daughter quit school and started working. The younger daughter started at the local community college, instead of the private Christian school she was accepted to and looking forward to going to. The whole situation is horrible and it's a very good reminder that you just never know what will happen, so please make sure that all your i's are dotted and all your t's are crossed so that you don't end up in a circumstance that could have been prevented :(
  13. We have Roomba with 2 dogs and 4 long haired ladies in this house. Roomba and hair don't work real well together, but we still use it because the vacuum doesn't work very well in this house either LOL. I agree that it's not PERFECT, but it does great as a nightly vacuuming in our main living area, then we still vacuum once a week or so. Plus, it really is fun to watch LOL.
  14. My concern is that he still has major control over all these people. I read an article last week that calculated how much he spends in phone calls alone and it was phenomenal. He spent something like $10,000 in one month alone and most of the calls were to the yearning for zion ranch :(. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's been sentenced, I'm just afraid that it's not going to change much for the people still under his spell :(
  15. I'm not adopted but my dh is and my little brother was. Both in basically closed adoptions though we do have a little info about the birth parents due to visitations before the adoption was finalized. My husband is a wonderful msn and would not have grown up to the way he is without the adoption. On the other hand, my brother had many, many struggles and is not really in contact with the family anymore :( My husband would love to adopt, but due to the struggles we had with my brother, just not ready to go they're yet. Thank you to those that do adopt though. It truly is a wonderful thing.
  16. I have a 4th grader in Cali too. This is our first year, so we were starting with SOTW1, however I've decided to take the year off of that and go with just American/Cali history this year. We're going to use TruthQuest with the Binder Builder and Notebooking pages for American, and BF for California. Bringing my 1st grader along for TQ, but not for BF.
  17. That same thing happened with my odd. I had the HOP program since she was in preschool (she's 9 now). I got serious about it when she was in kindy (ps) and we never even finished Level 1 because once it clicked, it just clicked. Now with my mdd, she just finished Level 1 and while I can see the lightbulb is ALMOST there, it's not quite as clear-cut as it was with odd, so we're continuing onto Level 2 and excited to do so :)
  18. We're doing astronomy and I decided to go with the Jr. for my 1st grader who is not a big fan of writing. It has less writing assignments, but still will be able to go along with the 4th grader.
  19. We have had the "level" version of HOP for years now so that is what I'm using with my first grader. I will say that level one at the end is slightly more advanced than she got in ps kindergarten last year. We have worked through finishing it this summer and will be moving into level 2 next week. Have fun!
  20. We've just begun the orthodontic avenue of life LOL. My 9 yr old had a major cross-bite and in incredibly crowded mouth. I got 3 different referrals from our pediatric dentist (who I adore and trust 100%) and went to free consults at each of them. First of all, I loved doing this because I saw that all 3 of them had the same basic workplan of what she needed. This made me feel like at least we were on the right path. The basic plan was an expander for the roof of her mouth and then braces in the future. There were some differences with how they were going to deal with a molar that was growing in sideways and killing the tooth in front of it, and with the teeth that were already in and already crooked. I also saw the M-A-J-O-R difference in offices. 2 were huge fancy mansion-offices LOL. Arcade games all around, bottled water served to you, employees everywhere you turn, etc. Makes you wonder how they come up with all of the money to do their over the top offices ;). Then the 3rd I went to was a guy that had just taken over the practice from someone who retired. This ortho was fresh out of college (but an excellent college) and his office was nothing fancy. He had a receptionist and 2 ladies in the back with him. Guess who was cheaper?? By a LONG SHOT. Seriously. The cheap guy was less than $2000 (I don't remember exactly, but I think it was closer to $1500) and the other 2 were in the $5000 range! The 3rd guy had the same basic workplan as the other 2 and was much more personable! He was there to make his business grow. We have been soooo happy with our choice to go with him. My daughter's mouth looks excellent. The staff at this ortho has been superb! Even taken 2 after hours calls from us and shows up at the office with no complaints and nothing but super sweet service. We really have been very happy. So, while I wouldn't normally just say "go with the cheap guy" especially in this sort of service, but only suggestion is to definitely get multiple opinions. You never know what you'll find!
  21. Character Building For Families was recommended to me and so far, I love it. http://www.characterbuildingforfamilies.com/
  22. We started today, for our first official day of homeschooling ever :). It went fairly good! My oldest loved it, just as I suspected, my middle didn't like the writing, just as I suspected, and the 3yr old was a pain in the booty, just as I suspected LOL. Honestly though, we started at 9, did all our calendar group time stuff, a nice talk about what we're doing and what is expected, had a recess time, and were done with most everything by about noon (6 yr old at 11:45, 9 yr old at 12:30), with 1 "recess" break in the middle. We do still have history that we're going to do when the 3 yr old is down for a nap though. I didn't want to take that on with her butting in the middle all over the place LOL. We accomplished reading, spelling, handwriting, math, letter writing (thank you letters to our uncle for organizing a family reunion), art (name plates for workboxes), english (oooh - just realized the 6 yr old didn't get to FLL today - better do that before we get to history), character building and will be doing history after nap. Not bad for our first day! I felt a little like a chicken with her head cut off, but I have a feeling it will get easier as it goes. They each needed lots of direction for what they do next, and what they do with each lesson. I felt like I was going back and forth like a crazy person, but it worked, and I can only see it getting better from here on out. Excited for the future here :)
