  1. It's freezing in our house, ok, freezing for me!!! 61 degrees right now. Somethings up with our furnace or condenser thingy outside. We bought this house last year as a foreclosure, so there were no homeowners to ask about the furnace, a/c, etc. I don't want to spend the money to fix whatever's wrong *whine* I HATE being cold and I HATE that I might have to spend money on this right now. Ok, whine over, uggh! Thanks for listening. Angel
  2. Thank you so much for your helpful advice. I did show dd the sample video and she liked it. Math has become such a struggle as we have gotten into concepts that are difficult for me:eek: Dd also thinks differently. I see how to do the problem, follow the steps and then do it. Dd wants to know WHY we do it that way and if it will work the way she thinks, yada, yada, yada! We spend much of our time misunderstanding each other. I don't CARE why it works:D It looks like we'll begin saving up for VT (or looking on ebay). Thanks for all the great advice and help! Angel
  3. My 13dd will be in 9th next year and we are looking at Video Text for math. We have used Rod and Staff for 6-8th (currently). She is a little bored with math these days and dh and I were wondering if we could go ahead and begin VT now with her instead of waiting till next year. Does VT really teach all they need to know for solving algebraic equations at the beginning of the series. Dd didn't finish R&S 7th completely. Would that matter? Also how important are proportions to algebra? This seems to be the only math concept that she struggles with! :( I despise math! I'm ready for a video teacher (and her dad) to take over this part of school. Thanks for the help. I think this might be the first time I've posted on "the other side" of the boards :) Angel
  4. Dd6 JUST got rid of her fever for good yesterday! It was there full force from the previous Monday! Seven days total with 3 of those days it not coming under 101 and mostly staying at 102.5. Ugh! I took her to urgent care but it was just the flu. He gave her some cough w/codeine to help her sleep but that's about it. I came down with it after having no sleep for days. I also had a sinus infection and today is the first day since last Thursday that I feel halfway like a real person and actually slept more than a couple hours at a time. I'm still trying to figure out why WE have to continue waiting on everyone else while sick  Dh hasn't caught it yet but it may be that all of us sickies slept downstairs away from him ;) Hang in there and try to get some rest when you can. Angel
  5. I read the Riftwar Saga YEARS ago! That might be a series I need to revisit. I only cautioned about the David Eddings books because you never know. It's best to err on the side of caution ;) I wasn't sure if Karri's ds was on the younger side or older side of 13. I couldn't tell from what he's already read. Do you read Robert Jordan? Enough hijacking of the thread:) Angel
  6. Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede -Dealing with Dragons -Searching for Dragons -Calling on Dragons -Talking to Dragons Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini (sp?) Dragons in our Midst Series by Bryan Davis (I haven't read these but dd13 loves them and has been glued to this series since November) -Raising Dragons -The Candlestone -Circles of Seven -Tears of a Dragon The Belgariad by David Eddings-this may need to wait a year. I just previewed for a 16yo friend of mine and another friend let his 14yo read it this year. There are plenty of books in the series, no bad language, no s*x, but a few adult situations. Hope this helps get him started :) Angel
  7. I thought you didn't live close to the museum and was curious if you had visited it yourself. I meant nothing more by the statement than what it said, had you read/heard about it or visited. I certainly was NOT implying anything at all! Angel
  8. being only an hour away from it, many of our church folk have been, including very good friends of ours. Here's what I know. The older kids would be ok with the 6yo being hit or miss depending on attention span. It might be a long day with the littles. (The friends of ours have a 12, 7 and 6 yo). YOU may not get to see all you want to see and read with the kids along but the kids would enjoy it. My friends also say not to go on a weekend if you can help it. Being homeschoolers they've been both on weekdays and weekends and the weekend was packed. They all love it and have been numerous times already. HTH Angel By the way, Toni were you talking from experience, as in already having visited or going off of something you've read or seen? Just curious
  9. First we went through the books (that we could find at the library) that were listed in the back of 100EZL, but you may have done this already. Then we went to Explode the Code and just read, read, read. We did start First Language Lessons but we went through it slowly.
  10. for older elementary/middle school we have really been enjoying Jump In Writing by Apologia. Angel
