  1. My son also figured out negative numbers 5....he is looking forward to that. I really just need to buy levels 5 and 6 now, plus the workbooks for two more kids. I guess, if we have a.4th, I will be making copies....
  2. The permission was just for the copying. Our Office Depot is very strict with copyright, some others are not. I have never tried to copy anything that did not give permission, I just make sure I know the page it is on and exactly what it says I can do before I go in.
  3. I had one (that gives permission in the front) cut, copied and spiral bound for $6-7. The book new would be $16, I have two other kids to use it with later. It was a great deal for me :)
  4. What stayed are you in? We have blocked our review window many times driving from MO to OK. My parents did as well when I was a kid.
  5. I have never seen the old version, but I have been challenged by some problems in CWP 3 and I consider myself good at math. The solutions in the back are very helpful!
  6. I know TWTM guidelines are for more hours, but I have read and heard many places that you should be doing about 1 hour per year. 1 hour in first, 2 in second, etc. Do you have to start reporting hours in second grade for your state? You still don't need more than two hours of seat work. Piano lessons, dance, gymnastics, homeschool PE, reading time, those can all factor into your time. We started 1st grade at an hour, by the end of the year we were naturally going about 1.5 hours, and 2nd became 2 hours without trying. I take more of a Charlotte Mason classical approach. So my lessons at this age are planned to be short. I looked for curriculum that would not take all day. It works for us, DS is doing well with our methods.
  7. It's not really that I am taking the time to "not get it." I spend no time on it at all, so I really don't get it. We do not watch network tv or network news often, I do not surf YouTube looking at videos, I think it OS a colossal waste of time. I do know people who spend hours looking at YouTube videos and I know this because they constantly post them on Facebook. I don't watch the videos when they POP up. So I really don't know what it is.
  8. I took a legal liabilities class for my master's program. It was for business and fitness groups. But what the professor said was that pretty much all of those warnings came about because someone tried it and attempted to sue.
  9. My son does the same thing. I know he does it when he rushes. Most of the time I just have him look at the problem and he knows what he did wrong. I started requiring fewer practice problems. I circle about half the problems in a lesson. If he does not miss any, we move on. If he misses 1-2 we rework only the missed problems. If he misses 3+ we report, discuss, look back at the lesson pages, and add more problems from the lesson. He staryed to love math again when we started doing it this.way. I let him move at his own pace and grade every few days. He is making fewer and fewer mistakes from rushing.
  10. For my son we did 100 Easy Lessons and a few random.phonics workbooks for prek and k reading. I got easy.readers on our science history and geography topics, we took turns reading them until he could read alone and then tell me about them. Bible copy work that I put on the board. In first grade we started, R&S grammar, Spelling Plus with dictation, what ever we wanted to read. He did some alone each day and we did a few books together. This year we do the above with added homophone study, McGuffey readers, and Latin.
  11. I have to say this to DD a lot!! She has made herself bleed! When I ask why she chew her nails (finger or toe), she says "I was hungry." Get an Apple!!!! I did have to request that my child stop folding laundry and eat.
  12. Calculus was a prerequisite for my college Stat class. Is a non calc based stat class going to fulfill that requirement for college? Be sure you check the prerequisites for the university classes.
  13. 4a has about 19 lessons in fractions I think. My son can hardly wait!! He is mad that I am making him do the test of the book. I need some fun fraction stuff too.
  14. None of the poll options really worked for me. I have used and continue to use RS4K. I like that the books are shorter. The 10 chapters easily work as a 10 week unit study or can be expanded by breaking up the chapter and getting additional books. The flexibility is great. The labs are easy, inexpensive, and demonstrate the points of the chapters well. I like that with the different books I can give my kids good, thorough information (for their level) in a short lesson. I don't want to spend excessive time on science and history at the elementary level. I am more focused on math, spelling, grammar, and other basics. They will, however be familiar with the topics and will be able to give input into what they want to study more thoroughly later. We have done PreLevel 1 Biology and Chemistry, we are about to start Physics (I threw in an extra study on the human body). That is 2 years worth of science. Next year, we will start round 2 with Level 1 and we will do Chemistry, Biology in a year, Physics and Astronomy the next, and then Geology/Earth Science. We may have to jump to level 2 for some. They are pricey so I looked around when I found that I liked them. I found one set at a garage sale! Then I purchased a bundle of 3 Level 1 books from the forums. I bought two sets new and may need to buy two more new. If you want to try them, see if you can find them used :)
  15. 1. Yes, I would expect the teacher to deal with it, but individually. Unless the whole class was running around saying the word(s) there is no need to address the issue with everyone. I deal with language in my dance classes. I do not male speeches to the whole class of they use a word I don't want said in class, I tell the student. 2. I meant to quote another post, but I can't multi quote on my phone. I was more appalled at the teacher who taught the meaning of the c-word to the student. Even though she was in high school, still not okay with me. I would prefer my child be directed to ask me or my husband what a word means. That is what should have been done. That is what I do. Just say ask mom or dad and live on, redirect.
  16. It depends on the C word you ate talking about, there are a couple that I did not know until college. I don't cuss, DH rarely does. My kids don't know those words. I would NOT want a teacher to tell my kids anything about the words. That is my job.
  17. Mom and Dad were 31&32 when I was born, I am the oldest. DH parents were the same, but Mom was 32 and Dad was 31. DH and I were both 25 (2 days apart :) ) when our oldest was born.
  18. We had pizza last night. We have a garden, we are buying a portion of home raised pig this fall, we are contemplating chickens and a goat in the future. We eat wheat breath and whole grain bread because we prefer it flavorwise. I always have. We make casserole with cream of mushroom soup. We eat condensed soup for lunch. My kids eat fruit snacks. I have some Ben and Jerry's in the freezer. I drink soda. We try to eat healthy, but convenience wins some days. I do use my crock pot a lot! We own two businesses, I teach dance at one in the evenings. I don't have time to cook all the time. DH cooks many nights, but if the baby has been a handful or if he spends all night in the garden...we make a quick dinner at 9pm.
  19. I don't test my kids on math. If they can successfully complete the review at the end of the book without help I know they are good. Also...I never had a balance scale :) I also never bought a meter stick, just a yard stick. I do have a kitchen scale that we used for about 5 minutes once.
  20. My 2nd grader already knows more math the. Some of the high schoolers around here. They cannot do long division or regular multiplication....Everyday Math....they have to do remedial math in high-school. You can't do complex math if you don't understand the basics.
  21. #2 were both a week late. With Matthew, I was having regular contractions for weeks. I would time them for a few hours....then get some water and go lay on my left side. Within an hour they were gone. I sat on a yoga ball for a week. He was nice and low and my hips were nicely stretched when labor did start :) My doctor stripped my membranes twice. I don't know that it did anything. I was at a 3 when she did it, three days later, still a 3 when she did it a second time. Then it was another 3-4 days before he was born. We tried everything, but they just come when they are ready. Stay hydrated, eat well, and rest. I hope you don't have another 4 weeks :)
  22. When I click on New Content, I see all of the social group threads, but there is no option to reply. One tread they commented that it was a private group....I don't know of it is a problem with settings, I just thought you all would like to know. :)
  23. A good, sturdy pair of tennis shoes with added arch support. I just used some Dr Scholl's from Walmart. Flip flips actually agravate and can be a cause of the problem. Your feet might feel better in a sturdy pair, but it can't heal because you abuse the injured/damaged tissue when your foot flips the shoe up as you walk. I wore my tennis shoes for a year, I taught ballet, tap, and jazz in the shoes. I did not go barefoot unless I was in the shower. I already stretched a lot, but I really focused on my calves and heels. Mine was really bad. It hurt before I stood up in the morning and I hobbled around for 10 minutes every morning. Every step hurt all day. After 6 months, it seemed to be better, but I stuck with the tennis shoes because I wanted full recovery. It has been 5 years and another baby (it developed with the weight of pregnancy combined with a lot of dancing) and I am still pain free. I wear my flip flops and go barefoot a lot. I do keep a good pair of walking shoes. If my feet ever hurt at all, I wear tennos shoes for a few days. I also like to walk outside when it is cold. The cement feels great. I even walked out in the snow barefoot :) I did tale Motion for pain relief and aid in healing.
