  1. In what grades did your students take the AP classes with Lily Serbicki? It sounds like her classes might be a good fit for my dd. I'm just wondering when would be the best time to take them.
  2. Interesting....would you mind elaborating? What characteristics make MIT a given for a certain kind of student? Maybe I'm a jaded cynic or perhaps I've misread your meaning (or both), but it seems to me the take home message from many posts, news articles, and books is that in the current college admissions game, the reality is this: good students are a given, great students are everywhere, and exceptional students are a dime a dozen. There are no guarantees. Or did you just mean that if such a student had the inclination to apply, she would be a qualified candidate, both academically and otherwise, for MIT?
  3. We have countless pictures of dd in an array of dresses, covered with mud and dirt, with various creepy crawlies and critters in her hands... I've always presumed that was normal... ;) Memories of her in dresses while wading in ponds were part of the reason I chose the painting I did for my forum picture. :)
  4. Or not. ;) No brilliant plan surfaced overnight, go figure... I'm considering something like this: 9th: AP Human Geography 10th: AP World History or European History 11th: AP US History (possibly AP US Gov as well) 12: AP Economics The sequence may change, she may switch focuses, and/or she may decide not to do all AP. So, basically this is probably an exercise in futility... ;)
  5. How often do the instructors change? It looks like there is only one option for AP World History with PA Homeschoolers. Is it unrealistic to hope there will be more options for 2016-2017?
  6. Oh, you've completely misunderstood! I'm waiting for you all to tell me! Get to it already! :toetap05:
  7. Never say never... AP history courses are now in the plans...
  8. Search the threads or email instructors to be sure. It's my understanding Thomas Hummel and Kathleen Brian use the workshop model. Chloe Richardson does not.
  9. I think it might depend on which instructor is teaching Rhetoric 1.
  10. Thanks! I will look into both of these! The classes sound like they might be a better fit.
  11. Thanks! I'll need to give it more thought... Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but group critiquing/grading was not part of my university experience. My daughter is growing quite cynical of group projects because of the negative experiences she's already begun to accumulate. I'm not sure how thrilled she would be with the idea. The amount of time you mentioned concerns me. How much time a week do you think he spent on the writing of other students? ETA: To clarify... Study sessions or group work by choice can be wonderful. It's not that I'm against groups entirely.
  12. I'm not close enough, but thanks for the info! Maybe someone else can benefit!
  13. Oops. I think these are actually in person classes. That won't work. ;)
  14. Has anyone taken these classes? Care to share experiences? http://ati.mit.edu/ap
  15. I was seriously considering this class for the year after next, but the bolded gives me pause. Would you mind elaborating? How much time is spent editing each other's papers? I am so thankful you mentioned this. Also, could you please clarify the role of the student TA? I've heard several raving reviews about this class, so I am a bit dismayed to see both of these. Obviously it's working well for many, many families - I'm just not sure it will work for ours. Has anyone had a teen who did not thrive in these sort of classes? Are any AP English Language classes with PA Homeschoolers taught in a different format?
  16. Could you elaborate on this? Did she take the class with PA Homeschoolers? Was it not a good fit because it wasn't a live class and/or something else?
  17. I hear you! I have similar thoughts. I've been thinking of the cost/benefit ratio. The portfolio costs no money, but it does cost time. The benefit? I think that's hard to determine. Some families have found many benefits, others not so much. I will say that I've always been somewhat resistant to talent searches in general. In the end, however, we've used something from every single one DD has joined - classes, camps, etc. Sometimes we had no plans of doing anything with the program, but applied just in case. We were later glad we did. I have some qualms about the whole "giftedness" concept, so on one level I wrestle with that. On another level, my mantra is to seize opportunities because you never know where they might lead. Good luck deciding!
  18. I've noticed a few of these classes are already filled for next year. When does registration typically open? Thanks for all the reviews!
  19. We've tested almost every year since third grade, including when we lived in states that didn't require it. Terra Nova in elementary SCAT and Explore in 6th ACT starting in 7th
