  1. I think we ended up with 8 or 9.

Writing Great Fiction: Storytelling Tips and Techniques made a significant first impression with my daughter. I'm not sure how many lectures she's listened to at this point, but after the first one she wrote one of her best stories ever.

(It may just have been timed with a developmental spurt, but she did comment on using  tips mentioned in the lecture.)

  2. Thanks, everyone! Your posts prompted me to look at the website more closely. I was obviously confused about a few things!

It makes total sense to turn in the work at each level. I don't know where I got the idea that you could only make one submission.  :confused1:  Clearly not from the site. It is actually recommended that work be submitted at each level, although it is not required. Our plan is to submit at each level. It will probably be motivating and encouraging to have smaller goals and rewards along the way.

I think I now have a better understanding of validators and advisors. This is starting to seem doable.

Thanks, again, for your posts! Our plan is to send in the registration ASAP and be all set with everything else by the end of summer.

  3. Thanks for clarifying.  So, it's not so much that the school doesn't offer credit -  they clearly do - it's that the credit they offer wasn't seen as overly advantageous for your daughter. That makes sense. Every situation is unique. Thanks, again.

OP: The current plan is for my daughter to do both. Two or three SAT 2s are required by some of the schools she is considering, so those are a must for her. She wasn't going to take APs until we started researching schools and started comparing AP to DE. For her, at least for now, the best plan appears to include both SAT 2s and APs.

  4. SAT2 subject tests may be required by a college. they test high school level knowledge.

AP might give college credit. They test college level knowledge.

If student does AP, he might as well throw in SAT2.

We opted for SAT2s. They were required, and we preferred DE over AP to demonstrate college level mastery. Her school does not give credit for eitehr anyway.

Are you sure about that? I'm almost positive her university awards credit for APs. Unless I'm confused about which school she is attending, there is more than one by the same name, she is in a special program that doesn't accept them, or I'm otherwise mistaken.

I'm just starting the high school merry go 'round, so I'm interested in knowing if schools sometimes list that they accept them, but then don't. Thanks!

Do you accept College Credits from classes in high school, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit?

Yes. Generally, we accept a 4 or 5 on AP tests and a 6 or 7 on IB examinations. You can learn more about entering the college with outside credit by visiting our College Catalog.

  5. I'm actually less worried about PonyGirl. She is the kind of student MIT would give their eye teeth for (she has no interest in MIT at the moment).

Interesting....would you mind elaborating? What characteristics make MIT a given for a certain kind of student? Maybe I'm a jaded cynic or perhaps I've misread your meaning (or both), but it seems to me the take home message from many posts, news articles, and books is that in the current college admissions game, the reality is this: good students are a given, great students are everywhere, and exceptional students are a dime a dozen. There are no guarantees.

Or did you just mean that if such a student had the inclination to apply, she would be a qualified candidate, both academically and otherwise, for MIT?

  6. We have countless pictures of dd in an array of dresses, covered with mud and dirt, with various creepy crawlies and critters in her hands...

I've always presumed that was normal... ;)

Memories of her in dresses while wading in ponds were part of the reason I chose the painting I did for my forum picture. :)

  7. I'll hopefully have details tomorrow.

    Or not. ;)

No brilliant plan surfaced overnight, go figure...

    I'm considering something like this:

    9th: AP Human Geography

10th: AP World History or European History

11th: AP US History  (possibly  AP US Gov as well)

    12: AP Economics

The sequence may change, she may switch focuses, and/or she may decide not to do all AP. So, basically this is probably an exercise in futility... ;)
