  1. Rod & Staff has extremely inexpensive music theory workbooks that aren't fluffy. :)
  2. Thank you so much to everyone who so graciously replied. He says his head feels considerably better but I hugged him tight today and he cried because he said it hurt his sternum. I will give it a couple of days and if I don't see improvement we'll have to go for an x-ray... Thanks again!!
  3. My 8 year old fell off a step in a Chick fil A playground and slammed the back of his head off a shoe bench. One huge goose egg formed on the back of his head immediately and a smaller one below, close to his neck. He had the wind knocked out of him but didn't lose consciousness. He didn't show any signs of concussion, but I took him to an urgent care facility to be safe anyhow. He told the PA there that his sternum hurt and he gasped a couple of times in the car on the way over saying he had sharp pain in the same location. Odd since he fell on the back of his head then his back slammed down. The PA palpated the area and looked at his head. He seemed fine and was in good spirits after the initial crying when he fell and she sent us home. It's nearing 24 hours and he's not stopped mentioning the pain in his chest all day. I felt it and I don't feel anything out of the ordinary but he winces and pulls away when I touch the part he says hurts. He also says breathing in the cold air causes sharp pain as does leaning over. I cannot figure out what on earth is wrong with him? Thoughts?
  4. My grandma sent me home with a bag of flour and it ended up infesting our pantry. I almost lost it. You'll need to clear EVERYTHING out unless it's sealed in plastic and has no bugs then wipe down with hot water and vinegar (or whatever cleaner you prefer). The most important thing is to leave not one single spec, crumb or any reside behind. If you can leave it empty for a few days to get any that are "on their way" in, do so. Restock with things carefully sealed. (I now keep flour, pasta, grains, etc... in airtight containers or bags.) Good luck. I wanted to cry when it happened at our old house!
  5. My MIL, who is a very nice lady, "comforted" me after a miscarriage by saying, "When I was young, we didn't go out and buy a pregnancy test at the drop of a hat. You probably wouldn't have even known you miscarried if you hadn't taken a test so early." I was 8 weeks, but whatever.
  6. Are you wrapping it around the finger and fastening it to itself on the other side, or just cutting out small piece and sticking it on? I'd say have him put it on at bed time and wear it overnight and see if it stays on better then.
  7. After years of struggling, DH and I finally bought a house 6 months ago. It's a major fixer upper and has many quirks but it's in a beautiful neighborhood. The house is moved into and in order except for the garage where we stored seasonal things and some furniture that we wanted to sell at some point after we painted it or whatever. The change of weather is here, so I go out there to "shop" in my DD's outgrown clothing bins for my younger DD. I was greated with a coating of green mold over a large area. The clothes were in sealed bins, so they seem ok, but the wood furniture is just covered and I just threw away two car seats and a stroller that were completely covered. I'm trying not to burst into tears but I don't know what to do. There were some boots and shoes in original boxes and when I lifted the lids, they were moldy too. The bizarre part is that I can't find any standing water (not even the tiniest puddle) or dampness coming from anywhere, so I have no idea where to even start. I imagine that indicates we have a significant problem somewhere in the foundation or walls? (We have no basement and the house is on slab, so I'm stumped.) I haven't called DH but we've had just the worst luck with homes over the years and I just can't take anymore.
  8. She has clearly embarrassed your DD and put you both in bad position. What she's doing is totally inappropriate. I would respond by embarrassing her with kindness and openness in return. Do as a pp said and say to her "DD says you're super curious about how we do school here. I wanted to see if you would like to come over for school on x date and join us for lunch?" (Be sincere and offer a real time. Don't do anything out of the ordinary or your dd will call you on it in front of her, lol!) That's my 2 cents! :)
  9. Just finished watching the whole thing. I had to pause it for an hour so it could buffer, but I cried like a fool the whole time... so good.
  10. He's not quite there yet because he doesn't enjoy the physical aspect of writing. He's a typical boy who gets tired of manually writing. I'm planning to have him take typing within the next couple of years. I think if he could type, he'd write more, but I don't want to stunt his handwriting so I'm committed to sticking out this year and working on improving his handwriting. I let him narrate to me yesterday and my hand cramped trying to keep up with all of his ideas. He narrated 3 pages filled with descriptive details in just a few minutes. That said, he still needs plenty of work on Grammar, so that's what I'm really looking for. I do love the idea of publishing a book! I think that would be super motivating for him! I confess I was expecting a lot of recommendations but maybe I got blacklisted for some accidentally obnoxious post on some thread or another, lol!
  11. DS (3rd grade) did Sing, Spell, Read & Write in K-2nd grades. Admittedly, it wasn't challenging for him. Because SSR&W is hardly intensive in terms of mechanics, punctuation, capitalization, etc, I assumed he would need a decent amount of review and basics so we ordered A Beka Language 3. He's powering through it taking on about one new concept a day without any hesitation. He gets plenty of practice notebooking for science and history. At the rate we're going, he'll have finished the A Beka Language 3 curric. by Christmas, if not Thanksgiving. I guess we could do A Beka Language 4, but I was thinking that it might be wiser to switch to something more intensive (R&S 3?) so he's really getting a super solid foundation instead of just running through exercises from one limited perspective. Don't get me wrong, I like A Beka Language and their high school Grammar as well, but DS reads for hours a day and often says he thinks he'll be a writer when he grows up. I think it's a little early to call, but I'd like to give him the tools to succeed if he does go that direction in life. I'm open to other suggestions than A Beka and R&S for sure and I'd love to hear opinions on these or other options.
  12. Me too. Wednesday: Puma sweatsuit, solid pants, striped hoodie Thursday: Funky little dress and a cardigan Today: Jeans and peasant top with sandals I gained weight so it's severely limiting my selection. Otherwise, I'd wear more variety. That said, when I'm thinner, I gravitate towards skinny jeans and a tunic style top with a long necklace.
  13. I just bought DD 10.00 (ridiculous!) ballet tights and now that today is her first class, they are NOWHERE to be found. I've torn apart the entire house and car including closets and bags with no luck. I cannot express how aggravating losing things is for me. Number one pet peeve ever.
  14. Yes and no... You can laminate many small things in one pouch (leave a half inch or so around each item) and then cut them out individually. However if you laminate say, an 8x11 sheet and then cut the whole thing into small pieces, it will open the seal and cause peeling around the edges and either immediate or eventual damage to the laminated item.
  15. 4 kids, one very big box of cereal = 3 breakfasts
  16. Sounds like she will be a great parent one day, lol... I think she has excellent training skills and she's doing a bang up job of trying to train you to stop asking her to do a thing. (I have one of those and he's 8 as well!) Lucky for her, she has a mom who isn't taking the lesson. ;) I would not worry right now about reasonable compromises. Focus on the behavior at hand and be non-negotiable for the time being. In the future I would only entertain respectful, reasonable requests and even then, I would not allow everything you ask (or even 50%) to turn into a negotiation. I imagine the older and more intelligent she gets the more effective she'll be at bargaining, lol. Sometimes when I'm exhausted I find that I've accidentally allowed my 8 year old to bargain me from what I asked him to do into something entirely different and unrelated, lol. He's a master distractor.
  17. Pinocchio and have carnival foods and fish sticks Madagascar and have steak and fruit A Shark Tale and have a vegetarian dinner Elf! Oh where to start, lol?! Spaghetti with maple syrup, lol... Narnia and have Turkish Delight, Tea, etc... West Side Story (maybe too adult?) and have Puerto Rican dishes James and the Giant Peach with a peach themed dinner Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs... you could eat anything really, but huge meatballs or other huge foods would be hilarious and fun! Alice in Wonderland with a tea party A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving with toast, popcorn, etc... Curious George with a banana theme Jungle Book with tropical foods. Coconuts, bananas, etc... Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Pasta Putanesca Winnie the Pooh and honey barbecue chicken (or whatever) with a salad from rabbit's garden Beauty & The Beast and some of the foods from "Be Our Guest": cheese souffle, beef ragout, soup du jour, hot hors d'eouvres, pie and pudding en flambe Tangled and Chestnut Stew
  18. Watch Mulan and make a dinner with some Asian flair. The Sound of Music and "shnitzel with noodles" Toy Story and have pizza a la "Pizza Planet" Zorro and have Mexican food My kids said they'd like to watch Ice Age and make prehistoric and frozen themed foods for fun Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has a lot of fun food, but especially "toot sweets", lol The Aristocats and create a dish based on Creme De La Creme A La Edgar Monsters Inc and have sushi (like the restaurant in the movie) and snow cones (like the abominable snowman makes) Ratatouille and make.... ratatouille of course! Wall-E and make "drinkable meals", ie smoothies Kung Fu Panda and have noodles and dumplings Snow White and make candy apples for dessert I'll come up with more in a minute!
  19. I was an average math student in school and I took algebra I in 8th at my small private school. The public school in our district offered algebra to both 8th and 9th graders. I had a couple of friends who took advanced college calc before they graduated public high school thanks to dual enrollment or honors classes.
  20. Awesome! I don't think any of my kids have autistic tendencies, but we all watched the movie together and they were in awe of Temple and thought she was so amazing. That was the first time we ever discussed the topic and I was really happy to be able to have such a positive jumping off point.
  21. We have 3 close by Targets and 4-5 more in the surrounding areas. They're all bad with stock issues. They do not restock the same items like Wal Mart does, rather they have constant new "lines" for clothing, decor, bedding, all of it so everything is constantly out of stock. Super annoying.
  22. Us too. I thought getting them would solve the problem and it's driving me crazy. We don't even have to drop them... the lead just constantly wiggles ad falls out. ETA: We have 4 boxes of Dixon and no luck there either. I mean my kids are young, so I'm sure that plays in, but seriously. We are 3 weeks in and we've worn out 24 pencils between 3 kids. At that pace, I'll spend a fortune by June.
  23. My 6.5 year old (1st), who cries a couple of times a day, lol, would/could do it and would probably take a long time and cry about it... but that's typical. My 8yo (3rd) could write a couple of paragraphs within 10 minutes time.
  24. We're having discussion during science class today (BFSU A-3) and DD, just turned 5, has this blank look on her face the entire time. I'm pretty sure she has no concept of the three states of matter until she goes into the bathroom and announces, "Hey!! I can make solids, liquids, and gasses on the toilet all at once!" *Sigh* What a lovely child.
